I didn’t have a Kombi coffee this morning - I surfed long/late enough that my default coffee shop at the NBSS was open, and I had my coffee there in sitting-down comfort with our beginner and her boyfriend (who is my best surfing friend’s son) and had a nice lengthy catch-up chat with them.

The Kombi-sourced coffee at Av is excellent but the seating facilities are best described as “limited” ;)

One of my friends looped past in her car while we were getting dressed after our session and she was going to head to North Av for her surf (because it is good in a NE wind while the NBSS had been turned to cr*p by it by then).

Note: No chocolate brownies at the NBSS coffee shop this morning but I am promised a new batch for tomorrow morning - I realise this is a ploy to lure me to have a longer surf tomorrow so I will have my coffee (and accompanying brownie) there rather than at Av, but I have zero will-power to resist baked goods for breakfast so I expect I will be in the water from 6-ish until 8am when the shop opens :)

@W0nkey D0nkey I went out for bash at City beach this arvo for the first time surfing there. There were a few fun wedges coming through, pretty windy but still good fun for a paddle and got a few

Mark Rabbidge just shape one similar for my daughter.
    Be a Pam B model.
I posted page or so back.
    I want .
    Much envy.
But I've found myself on a different trip this year so have spent the funds on kicker skins , ski crampons and a new set of Contour full skins. ( the old skins where likely non-compliant " bio hazard")

So this morning at the NBSS was very much better (and bigger) than I thought it was going to be. I paddled out by myself a bit after 6am on my 5’7” Ultra Joe - I did wax and put the fins in my OG Flyer but put it back in the car when I decided (wrongly) that the big set I saw come through was a one-off freak.

It got bigger (and better) during my nearly 2 hour surf. Not many in the water - mainly just the usual suspects and about 1/2 of them stayed in the inside section and caught the reforms and white water. It didn’t really look great at any time, at least from the perspective of the overview from the beach, but it was a big 3’ (the food set waves tending up over 4’) but with a lot of water movement, some mushed up seaweed, a fair bit of current, and all that sort of goodness that keeps the Northern Beaches Secret Spot a secret ;)

My watch says I did this:

I had a very good (and apparently healthy) bacon and egg roll at Ryan Girdler’s new cafe at Av afterwards.

The Northern Beaches Secret Spot was well supplied with seaweed this morning. Rideable waves _were_ available, but you had to be prepared to hit a wall of seaweed and have your board stop dead - like hitting a patch of dirt on skis.

All of the usual suspects paddled out and gave it a bash for a shorter or longer time - I had about 90 minutes and got a few good-ish ones, my friend didn’t find it at all to her taste, had 20 minutes then went for a run instead, and everyone else was somewhere between those two extremes.

The photo doesn’t do the intensity of the seaweed experience justice, but at least you can see a couple of decent makeable (if you didn’t get stopped by the seaweed) little waves...

Heard there were some fun small ones this morning but when I checked it at lunchtime the NE wind was up. Looks like the W change has kicked in so I might check it after work for an arvo bash and see if there's any leftovers on offer....

Of course (sigh) I didn't surf this morning - after the seaweed extravaganza yesterday I assumed it would be unrideable, but the swell dropped off enough that further up the beach came into play, and one of my operatives reported Newport looking small but fun early today.

One of my friends who lives at Mona Vale is up for an early surf tomorrow, so I will give it a go there with her.

Had a short arvo bash at Woo yesterday, the odd fun one coming through but too many out and the strong W wind although nice and offshore wasn't helping getting into them. Managed to get a couple and get wet but wasn't anything epic.

@W0nkey D0nkey had any decent sessions over the last week or so?

Looks deceptively fun but I can definitely see the inside seaweed clumps, which are certainly not fun!

I surfed “elsewhere” this morning. Wasn’t too bad - a bit of backwash and also the waves jacking up pretty suddenly on takeoff, then a bit slow once you got going on the actual wave.

    Looked like this (afterwards):

I’m not sure about tomorrow morning yet, maybe I will have a day off because all else being equal I am surfing Thursday-Sunday. This morning was pretty nice though, hmmm...

Liked your snakes comment. I went to a semi secret spot on the Shoalhaven River (up the escarpment) on Saturday with the boy, it was warm before the storms and I was keeping a very sharp eye out. Didn't see any but did see a dead blue tongue on the way home :(. But yesterday my partner saw a FB report of a 3m black snake sighted at a Queanbeyan dog park.
It was about this time in 2015 we did our pre child trip to Yorkes, oh man, some big gnarly browns sighted on that trip!!

I've seen very few live snakes in the wild, probably the biggest is the resident Delicate python who hangs out there every Summer :D

There must be loads of snakes in that vicinity mate!! Lots of untouched bushland around there, I think @SAsurfa even spied a few further down that road towards Q's

Yes, I found my way onto one or two of them. From my handy-dandy GPS watch:

Yeah, there’s always sand there (and a rip next to it, and backwash, ...), so it ends up a fairly accurate reflection of where it breaks even if it is a couple of years out of date. Av ends up similar, the NBSS not so much.

Spent 28 days on NZ Sth Island from Aug 23 to Sept 20. First 3 weeks spent skiing many different fields and scored lots of good conditions. In the last week I spent 5 days at Kaikoura and got to surf a wave near there 4 out of 5 days. Only 2ft each session but a lot of fun and a place every surfer needs to visit. A tip, go in the colder months and there won't be many peeps around!

And there is a reason for that.... a few years back was chatting to an ex banana bender who had set up in Sumner, Christchurch... had two restaurants there (Pizza and Mexican)... 5/4 wetsuits, gloves, booties and a Camelback with hot soup inside the wettie..... and then lucky to stay out for an hour.

Yes, but the Qlders are pretty soft........I like surfing cold water, it was 11deg and I wore a 4/3 lined steamer with 2mm thermo vest with attached 2mm hood over the top. Also, 3mm gloves and 3mm booties. Lasted 1hr 40min each session and I would have stayed in for over 2hrs if I had 5mm booties.
It's much easier to surf cold water on a longboard and at a point break you stay warmer if you keep paddling back up the point after each wave.

I surfed at Mona Vale for a short session this morning. I didn’t think the Northern Beaches Secret Spot would have a wave so I just went straight to MV, which was 3’+ but a bit unruly. Fair bit of water movement and tricky takeoffs, but as with the other day there they were quite mellow waves once you actually managed the bumpy and swirly takeoff and drop.

I only surfed for 40 minutes or so, got a coffee at the shop at the SLSC then went home. I got one really good wave through to the beach after half a dozen meh ones and decided my froth level and luck wasn’t high enough to try for another one as good as that one, so I just went in.

Some of my friends had a surf at the NBSS at the same time as I was out at MV and said there were lots of small, short waves in front of the south end coffee shop

The NBSS was fun this morning. I surfed in front of the south end coffee shop - the bank my friends surfed yesterday while I was at Mona Vale. Quite a long wait between sets, but about 3’ and with good energy in them when they came through. It would definitely have been improved by a lower tide but I had a very enjoyable hour anyway. Looked like this afterwards (just about right on high tide):

Unfortunately 0 days on the mountain this season for me :(

Whilst @Mister Tee on XC Skis is packing it in for the season @SAsurfa is just warming up for a backcountry Main Range strike mission! :D

Craig - loving your backcountry pics on Insta, looks epic. Would love to get out there one day

Indeed :) I had it completely to myself for part of the session (my friend had to leave early so she could get to work on time).

In “honour” of it being a weekend day tomorrow, I was considering hitting the water at 5:30am but our beginner needs a lift and she doesn’t do super-earlies (sigh) so I don’t think I will be paddling out until after 6am, and there will likely be a few in the water by then.

With any luck Av will be working and we will end up with fewer people at the NBSS as a result - it looked nice there this morning (but a bit smaller and even fuller) when I went for my apres-surf coffee and toasted egg-and-sausage-and-cheese wrap ($8.50 total) from the Kombi at South Av carpark.

Lunchtime check here in the 'Gong:

2ft to maybe 2+ on sets with a few out enjoying the pristine, offshore conditions.

I'll be hitting it after work

I would like to do a Charlotte Pass BC XC ski Trip later next month, in October 2019 , but I have other things to attend to next month , so 2020 will be the next chance I will get to ski on the Main range. By then I should be able to telemark turn which will come in handy.

Was poor this morning at the NBSS. Enough swell hitting the beach, in the 2’ range, but the tide was too high, even from 6am when I paddled out - got worse from there too. I was basically taking off on the shorebreak, one quick turn, then kick out before landing on dry sand. Our beginner only got a couple, then failed in the kick out department on one wave, ate sand pretty hard, then went in. The rest of my friends, who had all also been stupid enough to surf also, followed shortly afterwards as nobody was really catching anything by that stage courtesy of too much tide.

Our beginner and I checked Av on our way around to breakfast Girdlers at Clareville (not long after 7am, giving an indication of how bad the surfing was, so we needed an early-opening breakfast option) and it looked crook - disorganised waves, the swell not really getting in and very full - and nobody out there, which is unheard of for a weekend morning.

I will likely try to catch something from about 5:45am tomorrow - there’s definitely enough light. Likely you would get something on a low-ish tide today but I am busy doing home things the rest of the day.

The NBSS put on pretty good conditions for our Sunday early today. A couple of feet on the sets and the lower tide early improved things. I got in the water about 5:45 having made a strategic error by having my WeetBix first, rather than hitting the water at 5:30 like a couple of my friends did to maximise the lower tide conditions.

It looked like this after my session and apres-surf coffee-and-brownie:

Ended up surfing Easty on Friday arvo. Wind swung offshore / onshore multiple times during the session, weird weather conditions. It was fun when I first got out but then the tide came in and killed it, became fuller and fuller.

Looks like a good week coming up for Pipe mate, hopefully you can get down there for a few more sessions during the afternoons
