Well, Easter certainly delivered the goods around the 'Gong and parts! Had a couple of cracking surfs over the long weekend and not too crowded either. I think the E swell direction produced waves everywhere so no particular stretch suffered, along with a lot of folk getting out of town whilst the weather was so good.

@W0nkey D0nkey how good are the banks at Easty right now!! That left bank off the creek/lugga is mint. I reckon E swell direction seems to be the best direction for the stretch, produces better peaks where as S swells often are too straight.
Had a big night Thursday so escaped down the coast on Friday to get away from the pub and all that.
Was good to just surf, cook dinner on fire etc. No amazing waves but good times.
The banks do look good at easty though!
Surfed there yesterday, small and onshore. Still fun.

Phillip Island Surf day . 22.4.22.
I got up at 0500 and was at The island before 0830am today after picking up my friend en route.
The tide was right out at 0900 and the high tide was predicted to be very full at 1600.

Today was a nice sunny day with some clean swell and offshore winds at Cat Bay

. It got super busy in the afternoon and I gave up once the crowds easily exceeded 20 people . Left point, Right Point, The Reef at Shelly Beach as well as Flynn's Reef were all busy but the surf was working .
It was a touch slow and fat . I could have done better on my full sized 9 " 6 long board rather than my 8 " mini Mal.
. I might take the full sized Long Board along just in case, the next time I surf at Cat Bay.

I love Cat Bay when it's on. Have you ever seen Express Point when it's firing?

No, I have not seen Express point when it is firing. I only really know Cat Bay and Smith's Beach at The Island. Otherwise I usually go to Point Leo , The Pines or Flinders.
The chap at the Island Surf Shop said they let people try before they buy their surfboards. That seems appealing since I have been looking at the BIG FISH surf board.

If it's ever big and offshore go and have a watch from the point. Probably one of the best, and heaviest waves in Victoria when it's on.
Mass produced, and definitely not local but...

I try to support locally made boards, local shapers and Victorian surf board manufacturers. Trigger Brothers and Island surfboards come to mind.

A good SW ground swell (with predicted with off shore winds) is coming to MP and WP on Sunday May 1st , next weekend. It will be too big for the open beaches on MP so WP wil be firing AFAIK .
. Monday week could still be surfable at WP, so two days in the brine back to back could be the way to go.I have three wet suits so I can surf three days back to back in a dry fresh wet suit.

The wrist is very ginger... Lucked into a few very nice corners Sunday morning and just an average session today. With family and work commitments I'll be putting the queue in the rack til Mon-week when there looks to be a sustained pulse coming from the East.

Late post - Another good long weekend of surf here in the 'Gong but unfortunately I went Saturday morning when it was weaker and tide was mega low. Snagged a few on the foamie but when I went back to check it mid arvo it was waaaaaay better!

Unfortunately for me the dreaded swimmers ear has kicked in and whilst I'm waiting further confirmation from the specialist, I may have to go under and have the excess bone growth removed as it's gotten quite bad / blocked.

Anyone in here had the procedure done before? @Craig B did you recently have this done? I know it's been discussed in threads before but cannot recall who it was.....

Also, stumbled across these, has anyone used them before and can recommend them? Picking up a bottle of them from a fella in Thirroul today, hoping it helps as my ear is completely blocked up and won't unblock at the moment. Been like that for a few days :(

I had chronic problems with "surfers ear" in my late teens and twenties, those eardrops that dry the ear out helped somewhat (amost 60 now so dont remember the name) but wearing earplugs is what kept me surfing then ocean swimming when a neck injury ended my prone paddling days.

Same. Around 30 years ago I was told by an ENT I’d need surgery in 5 years. I started using Aqua Ear and another identical product. Later I started using Docs Proplugs. Surgery avoided so far…

5 days in a row of swell and off shore winds at W.P, coming right up this weekend and into next week until Wed. at least . I am going to camp down there and surf 3 days in a row !. I have 3 wet suits and booties for each day so no cold slimy damp wet suit need be donned each chilly morning.
@prcoy look at this !

First week / weekend of no decent surf since January. It's been good having a bit of a break... I did sneak out for a surf on the open beaches Monday evening. It was large and unruly, and quite an error paddling out actually. Waves would have been 4 - 6' and the wind was a strong 30km/h onshore. I lasted one wave (to paddle in)... Board in the rack again this weekend - but it looks like plenty more surf on the horizon.

Continuing my post hernia Surgery, post Covid recovery. Now at week 5 and three quarters but my Covid episode has delayed my recovery. I lost 1 Week in ISO worried my sneezing was going to ruin the surgery, then another week totally flat, so no exercise at all. I’ve only begun exercising the last 2 weeks beyond walking and I’ve still got a bit to go. Minor persistent fatigue limits how much I can push myself for now. Swimming has moved from 800m to 1300m at maybe 66%-75% of full effort. I hope to hit 1500m Saturday and then lift the tempo and distance just a touch. Then hopefully back at yoga in a week or two - guided by a Physio Visit tomorrow. Then surfing.

Even though my 6 week restriction on heavy lifting and vigorous exercise expires in 2 days, I think I’ll hold fire for at least another week and possibly two before getting back in the water surfing.

lel.... got my first set of inguinal hernias in early 50's...... went too hard after a month off with flu. Second set a few years later going too hard when coming back from hamstring repair. No desire to do a threepeat so I take things a bit easier.

Give it time, take it easy, listen to your physio.

Agreed. Should be compulsory. Hill 60 would have to be one of the most if not most dangerous rock fishing spots in Australia. Lost count of how many have died there. Ocean rock fishing has to be up there as one of THE most dangerous sports surely....
hardly a sport.
most of them are " xxxxx " from " SW Sydney " " harvesting" a free feed.
Can't blame them one bit ...
BUT when it costs you your life, it's not such a good idea for your family in the longer term......
or the peeps ( like me) that have to go looking for you, and deal with your family on the spot....

The above aside.
It's effing good fun hooking up a reddy or trevally etc etc and taking it home put it on the barbie.
When you know your shit. !

Silly standards that I can be fined for not wearing a PFD 5hp motoring an inflatable 200 metres from shore to my mooring in protected flat water Pittwater, whereas fisher people can walk out to the edge of a coastal rock platform with unknown experience in unknown/unrecognised conditions with potentially little cognition/awareness of localised environmental nuances and not be required to apply minimal life essential PPE. Astonishing!

Totally agree mate. Is it really worth risking your life to catch a fish? In my opinion and for anyone with any logic/common sense - it's a pretty simple question and answer scenario.

Are they that desperate that they have to do it? I guess some of them could be given their circumstances.....

Without actually having gone down there to H60 to see them doing it with my own two eyes, I can only make assumptions but I reckon you're on the money.

I'm not exactly 100% sure what the solution is (maybe they have to wear those life rings which stay fastened to the nearby rock shelf?) but I feel like there needs to be some more investigating/understanding into 'why' they keep doing it and trying to find some way(s) into stopping them from doing it......surely there's got to be a better way of finding a cheap/free feed than to have to risk your own life....

Nice one - hope you get some good uncrowded waves! Looking forward to seeing some pics :)

It should be good tomorrow, but busy and Monday,( less busy on weekdays ) and fading a bit on Tuesday but I will paddle out for two hours+ each day for three days consecutively. I have wet suit booties and wetsuits for each day so no camping out and putting on a damp cold wetsuit in the morning will be necessary.

That was bad luck about the car.
Yes surf was busy but waves were excellent.
Just got out of the water, smaller than yesterday but a crowd of 3. One was me and one my daughter. Can't ask for much better than that.

Smaller waves today but just 3 people out in the water. ....

That is what I was also planning and hoping to do .
FOMO writ large !
Thank Fcuk I have top shelf
road side assistance insurance. RACV paid for all the towing. Towing From Tyabb East to Langwarrin and today from Langwarrin to Alphington. Nearly 80 + kms of towing.
Having a new g/f who lives on the Peninsula at Langwarrin may increase my surfing time in the water as long as the car can be fixed .

W.P. Surf day. 1.5.22
I took my new g/f to see some of the surf action spots at W.P. opposite Cat Bay ( Phillip Island) along The Mornington Peninsula.
The surf forecast looked really good and I booked a campsite for 2.5.22 so I could surf three days in a row and hopefully improve a bit at surfing.
Anyway after getting up at 5 am on a Sunday , I set off at 6 am and I picked her up just after 7.15 am and went to see what was happening
_SAM1789.JPG
at Merrick' s beach.
Then we went to suss out the Pines at Low tide and Crunchy point which was already looking good at low tide.

There were plenty of people about at that low tide / early hour.It would become redonkulously busy the whole way and including Flinders. The weather wanted to drizzle properly but the offshore wind kept it back from doing its thing. We saw a rainbow just in case there was not enough to be cheerful about when having a day out at the coast.

I had booked a camp site for 2/5/22 but my car broke down and had to be towed by the RACV back to the abode of she who soon will have to be obeyed.
I had my three wet suits , one for each day, mini mal board , food , camping gear etc. , it was going to be ideal .
It was a major nuisance and bummer because the surf forecast for the whole upcoming 5 days looked really good.
However I did catch 7 waves quite easily before the incoming tide started to eat the swell at about 11 am.
I must have been out in the water for over 90 min.s. My 4/3 steamer wet suit was possibly overkill in 16.9 C. degree water with all of that paddling and more paddling.
I saw someone who was more of a basket case at surfing than I was !
. I may not be great at popping up, standing up and staying on the board but I can paddle and catch waves which is half of the art of surfing.
After my surfing we went to watch the surfers at Crunchy point while having some early lunch.
Excellent surfing conditions!
There were so many people trying to catch waves at all of the usual take off points . It was crazy.

Then we went to Flinders to look at
_SAM1805.JPG
_SAM1806.JPG
what The Gunnery at West head and other surf spots looked like on high tide.
_SAM1804.JPG

It was on the way back to Langwarrin when the jalopy malfunctioned badly and I had to wrestle it under control at high speed. There were seriously big tyre skid marks on the W.P highway where I brought car safely to a halt.
I smelt something burning and the automatic transmission had seemingly broken a rubber band. At first I thought I had a tyre blow out and reacted accordingly , killing the motor , putting the car into Neutral and engaging the hand brake and not locking up the brakes.
We waited almost two hours to be towed back to Langwarrin , riding in the tow truck with the tow truck driver.
The next day I had to get the Tee Mobile towed again, over 65 kms to Alphington where my mechanic has his workshop.
This is bad news. There are waves this week and snow is coming too!.I need my car with the snow rated AT tyres, AWD and the roof rack for surfboards and skis.
