If that hangs around for tomorrow afternoon I'll be a happy camper
Finally got back in the water on Saturday just gone. About 2ft maybe 2+ on the odd set wave that came through. Plenty of juice in them but the good ones were few and far between.
Still managed one really nice one and a bunch of mediocre ones. Conditions were flawless with offshore winds, beautiful sunny skies and the water's really not that cold for early July.
Ground hog day.Still around the 2ft mark with some great little banks
Nice. You have done well. I have surfed the last 4 mornings from 6:45am at the Northern Beaches Secret Spot and it has been a fair bit smaller than that - maybe Saturday up near Barrenjoey would have been around 2' on the sets, but the other sessions not really much more than 1'. Big backwash though so there was a fair bit of bucking bronco riding and some spectacular wipeouts for the small swell size. I got 39 waves on Sunday morning but all pretty short waves, so nowhere near as impressive a total as it might sound.
Very warm water still - has to be over 20C - and other than a cold offshore a couple of the days you wouldn't believe it was the middle of winter.
Some intrusive drone action both Saturday and Sunday though - Saturday one of my friends got tracked all that way up the beach from when she got out of the water up to her car (I was further up the beach at the time and didn't see it directly but she found it rather "off") and then on Sunday her son and I had one (different drone) hover literally just out of our reach for a minute or two looking at us while we sat in the lineup. We didn't see the operator in either case and we are pretty certain it wasn't anyone we knew (since all the usual early morning crew were all in the water with us). Bit yuck isn't it!
Thats plain rude.
For my friend, she was understandably put off by being followed and presumably filmed by the drone at close range out of the water and up the beach to her car, especially without the operator coming to talk to her at any stage. Maybe they have a thing for 50-something ladies carrying a shortboard and wearing a steamer? It does seem to me to be a fair way onto the creepy side of normal...
When I was surfing the next morning, the (I am guessing different) drone operator buzzed us fairly close several times - pretty high speed and only maybe 1m above the water - over a couple of minutes then sat hovering only a metre or two away from us for a minute or so when we were back out in the lineup. Not creepy really but certainly i felt it was intrusive and again the operator didn't talk to us or any of our friends.
We do get drones around pretty often - including some guys with really noisy, really fast racing types of them who like to zoom them around the cliffs at Barrenjoey - but they normally keep some reasonable distance away and don't typically track and film at close range individual people who don't know why it is being done.
Not sure who to complain to either... if it happens again I think I will paddle in and try to find the operator and ask what they are up to and/or get a car rego number - either that or carry a water pistol and see how the drone takes to a salt water gargle...
I like the water pistol idea
Sorry Ted, you didn't pick up on my sense of humour........."Please explain" was in relation to our wonderful bogan politician Pauline Hanson. She was filmed using a drone last week in a illegal manner and was contacted by the aviation authority regarding her uneducated behaviour.
Ahh. Sorry I missed the connection. That incident wasn't something I had heard about; must have been when I was away skiing and I don't bother watching TV - other than Tour de France, Formula One or similar - when I am at the lodge.
Pretty ordinary today, didn't bother getting wet.
What? What is this "not getting wet" concept of which you speak? In fairness I didn't surf today either - if I'd gone down I would probably have paddled out but I avoided the decision by not even going for a look Maybe tomorrow - been spoilt by perfect sunshine and offshores lately
Just picked up the new step up board for a upcoming Mentawis trip.
Contact CASA if it continues
Looks nice !!!!!
It's been a bit quiet here, primo swell filling in for the weekend, hoping to get down for some rivermouth goodness tomorrow
Who is the shaper @Drewboy - not familiar with the logo?
Far king pumping today.
Phantom bommies and the whales are loving it.
Not massive , Golfy maybe around 4ft. so prolly bigger over the other side but the wind be into it.
Have never seen it as flat in living memory as it was on Wednesday .
Could see it picking up yesterday by the hour.
Went from dead flat Wednesday to clean overhead gold Thursday, brisk off shore in the morning glass in arvo
Long time lurker, occasional poster, please bear with me for a quick question about a question. Looking at taking the little family on a surf holiday and I'm wondering about the best place to ask advice.
FWIW, I got wet at Warriewood today. Nicely sheltered and a couple of nice walls forming. Guessing it was a rare option today by the way the car park filled up with cars and the water filled up with rippers.
Depends on the conditions and the age of the little family.
You going get out of town ?
North be best this time of year as the water be warmer.
But other places will be not so busy if you don't mind wearing a steamer.
Oh and how far do you want to travel.
Macaronis resort looks like it has a good kiddies wave
Oh the internal grief to leave the family and go for a surf when it's pumping.... Can't decide.
Yes is always a struggle between looking after your self and looking after your family.
It's never easy , but you gotta look after yourself first sometimes to be able to look after them better.
Throw work into the convo and it gets more challenging.
I learned the hard way and didn't look after my self for many years , and I burned out.
I think the best key word is Balance.
We're looking at going OS, somewhere warm, early December or Feb. My other half is a competent longboarder but has low surf confidence due to time out of the water. Our grommet is 3. Been thinking about Sri Lanka, Hikkaduwa or La Saladita, Mexico. Crossed off Bali and Pacific Islands for various reasons. I'm in the short board category.
We know Saladita but can't find anyone that knows that side of Sri Lanka. Just heard stories re out of hand surf tourists and don't know how much salt to take with the rumours. Very open to suggestions. Any input greatly appreciated and thanks in advance.
Know this story only too well. Balance in order at the moment as I rode Thredbo Wednesday and Thursday as well as surfing Friday. Understanding partners are worth their weight in gold.
Save ya coin for when the grommet is older. February........road trip Sunny Coast. Ticks all boxes apart from not OS.
Can't help there mate .
Sound bloody good tho.
Annersley,from mona vale
Brief report - what a swell!!! Rivermouth was washing through on the turn of the low tide, would've been awesome at 4'ish but nevertheless got a few.
Ps I reckon the Sri Lanka east coast would be hit and miss at that time of year, Zimboo's advice is sound.
We have lived here for 20 years now, so i hope I observed something, after spending my youth on Sydney nth beach's. Feb can be gooooood here.
Can see it was pumping looking out to the Point from home.
This punter was Office bound working his way thru a far king workers comp audit going back to July 2012......
Started with Nick Cave as the background toones but it wasn't helping much.
I've done the mid north to some extent, would definitely like an extended northern nsw road trip but March onwards and outside of school holidays - unfortunately or fortunately we're hoping for a Vic road trip as the next main holiday to show my partner my old home town and GOR haunts, autumn 2018 at the earliest
It was well and truly pumping @nfip!!! I'm wondering if @PiniPowPow got out today
Sound advice. I am a lapsed Queenslander though and will be avoiding family on this trip.
Yep. Hikkaduwa is east coast. Offshore but not as consistent at that time of year apparently. Longboarders paradise it seems.
That is a shit..........hope all goes well. Grind it out and finish with some Celibate Rifles......."O Salvation"!!!
Thx , yeah the mofo's .
It's bloody hard going so far back.
Software has updated 3 times since then and can't access so much of it.
Back ups have been lost on the external hard drives when they have died.
Salt gets into everything.
And good advice.
God bless The Celies !
I did have Matt Finish there for a while but that didn't help either , just reminded me of one of my fave gf's from daze of olde.
BUT. heading up the mtns on Friday morn for 3 or 4 days next weekend.
will have the Rangers doing their thang ( didn't ride them last week with the not so hidden obstacles)
The boy is at Splendour in the grass atm...............hope he comes home with a brain!!!!!!!
Daughter getting snap chat updates from older brother, good vibes!!
So is my eldest Daughter.
Hope she has a good sleeping bag!!!!
I told him it was going to be cold.........so handed him the bag to -10 the day before he left. Younger daughter was laughing after he departed as he had taken the doona and woollen blanket as well. Soft!!!!!!
Farken pumping here in Sydney, wow what a swell event!
Saturday arvo easy 8ft bomb sets pouring in with immense power, definitely an event only for the most fit and crazy!
Haven't been on social media much this weekend but reckon there was enough E in it for a big session to go down at Solander, surprised they didn't run the Red Bull event this weekend? Would have been epic conditions for it!
Got some pics and vids I will try and upload at some point
Sunday lunch time update - still a lot of water moving around but the odd gem on the lower tide, mostly closing out on the local stretch - just too much water moving and power in them for the beaches. Definitely an event for the reefs and points.
@Drewboy did you see Vooie and Solander yesterday? V must have been huge and looking like Jaws lefts!
hey didn't run it . Saw something on fb or INsta. too much Sth they said.
was rather large looking.
I'm still office bound today. :-(
This morning very true SE groundswell in Sydney, I reckon footage of Solander to come from this morning on the high tide
@nfip is it just as solid down your way? Reckon the usual big wave locations would be firing - maybe Dep Bom?
I ve been stuck in the office all weeekend .
Have a nasty workers comp audit going back to July 2012.
due last Friday but got an extension till COB tomorrow .
Haven't been out to check it other from my driveway looking down to the Point.
Sounded pretty solid and direction looked good for it.
will see some stuff on fb soon I'm sure.
Dislike RE: workers comp case falling on one of the best winter swells & over a weekend
detail check out the front window just now looks phlat ....
I've had a week to do but needed clear space with out work distractions to plod thru it.
Back into again now.
Been dropping since this morning. Still looked a good 4-5ft at lunch, probably more 3-4ft now
Unbelievable weekend for mid-late July really, I mean who's heard of 22 degrees at this time of year?!!!
Felt more like a late April day IMO
