The weekend was your typical oversized S ground swell event on the Northern Beaches.

Two Words sums it up: Close Outs

And what made it even worse was the dreaded onshores setting in late morning to spoil the party

Still, I can't believe how good Brownwater got and that people were actually making barrels out there!

    @SAsurfa did you see Deadies?

Yeah totally, that's why I can't care less for those swells. Ha. Had mates surf both Brown Water and Deadies, not amazing they said but both got some barrels.

Hardly ever see anyone surfing out there these days.

If it's big, they tend to surf Back Bommie (or some call it Germans or German bank but to be honest I didn't think that was called Germans).

Craig may be able to confirm further on this.

Yeah the naming of Back Bommie as Germans or one of the bommies as Germans is so wrong I feel.

Germans is a dormant reef that breaks only ones or twice a year max, if that, but now every swell they call it Germans..

    Agreed Craig.

I always thought "Germans" or the German Bank was on the other side of Longy that came alive only on the biggest of big swells but could be totally wrong haha

@SAsurfa there's another mysto patch of reef / bommie I've heard talked about off mid - south Narra (pretty much straight out from the Mid Narrabeen SLSC) which only comes alive during the huge swells e.g. June 2016 and was aptly referred to as Antler reef from the ol' days of the Royal Antler pub before it was called The Sands.

That surprises me, I thought there would be more these days having a crac at Makaha due to jet skis.
My understanding was always that the German bank was further south and further out than Back Bommie.......GB is actually closer to Dee Why than Longy.
    Very very rare beast.

Sounds like a rarely breaking bommie down here.
Out off Rennies , called Vince Lacey's.
Legend has it it's only ever been seen or surfed by one person........ ;)

    From Nick Carroll:
If you check it from Long Reef, the German Bank is clearly well south of the back bombie and a fair way further out, surrounded by a lot of deep water, whereas the back bombie is in shallowerr grounds and very refractive.
It (the German Bank) really seems to need an acutely angled sth swell to be good, anything with much east seems to sorta go across the reef finger instead of down.

Yeah GB seems more towards Dee Why than LR, probably half way to be fair. Grainger et all getting carried away every swell :p

Worth keeping an eye out for the development of Tasman Lows on Sunday/Monday & Wednesday/Thursday. Frontal swell looks a given but could jump up if we see the low develop.
Could see some good mid-period swell all next week potentially.

    Northern Beaches surf report:

Long range S swell has come up and it was a good 2-3ft on the DY-LR stretch around 10:30am this morning

Curly more like 3-4ft on the sets around 10:45

Manly was more like an inconsistent 2ft+ perhaps a touch bigger at Queenie

@SAsurfa there were a few little 2 footers getting into Winki with no one out, looked really fun on a lid :D

Even saw a few Whales out beyond Deadmans

    Messy down South.
Big winds and water off shore.
Low probs too close for the swell to get organised here.

I can't see it bombing (-24hPa in 24hrs) on the BoM 4 dayer. But TBH I haven't been following it for a few days. AXS-R says it'll fizz. How's the NBs today? Big and roguey +8ft out at bondi... dogs breaky really!

Now I see what you mean. Yeah, not bombing but the clipper on Tuesday night swipes through and kinda dissects the Tasman low to the West of NZ. So the primary swell from SW wipes this low clean unfortunately.
Still... Should see some residual out of it.

I find that nothing more than a pretty picture TBH.

Without period, knowing the winds/storm that generated those heights etc its hard to draw anything from that :)

Went to torquay over the weekend, arrived in the region around 830 saturday morning and headed to bells. It was inconsistent and around 3' on the low tide. But there was maybe 60 out and even more at winki..

Headed over to Southside and ended up surfing a left over there for a couple of hours. It was super fun and steep on the takeoff petered out into something a bit fat. One poor punter was ditching his board to the duck dives and creased his board. Then a while latee a rogue set just detonated on him and his leash snapped. I grabbed his board and swam it over to him. But the size had definitely increased. Maybe 5' plus on a few of the sets.

Surfed jan juc in the arvo and it was closing out. Got pumped for 20 minutes then called it a day. I couldn't really be bothered with winki and bells was breaking super wide it looked like alot of work.

Funny timing as I was saying over the weekend I feel alot safer surfing cathedrals than say Fairhaven. Just a safer vibe. I guess that's been blown away.

No shortage of big whites around the area. Just talk to the old local fishermen. There's photos of the whites being hoisted on to the old pier by crane.

so, a thresher shark beached itself on Mcauleys beach this afternoon. Don't know if it was dead or alive but some kids decided it would be a good idea to cut it open and rip it guts out. Laughing and taking photos of it. Disturbing story.

Heading to the gong in a week and a bit. Bought a 3/2 after not having owned a steamer since I was a teenager. Chest zip doing my head in. Fits like a 2nd skin when on (albeit too warm for up here), but practically needing to dislocate my shoulders to get in & out of it. Freaked out a few weeks ago when wife went to splendour and I was stuck trying to get out of it after a surf. Great wetty, but damn!

    Yo
Is it zipless rather than chest zip?

Zipless take a bit of back and forth to get out of, but when you figure it out, it's easy. If you're not flexible it would be very hard to exit.

I see no difference in water flushing from chest zip to zipless, so I reckon they just go back to chest zip.
