Yeah. We had that a couple of years ago (unsurprisingly at this time of year) at the Northern Beaches Secret Spot. Came down for our early to see an expensive European SUV buried to its floor pan just above the high water mark in front of the North Palm surf club, near the middle of where the flags usually go, from presumably some sort of beach-driving attempt during the previous night. We all quite enjoyed - in a schadenfreud sort of way - watching the various recovery attempts through our session then also later in the morning that day :)

My friend surfed at Kiddies while I surfed (with her bodyboarder son and our rapidly-improving beginner) in front of the south end surf club this morning. It went from slightly too full to a bit current-affected quite quickly as the tide dropped but everyone got lots of waves and very very few in the water - for a fair bit of the time really only the three of us plus a local body surfer out at the south end.

The shark alarm went off while we were in the coffee shop after our session and they closed both ends of the beach. Fair sized one spotted between the north end surf club and bend-in-the-road by the morning chopper patrol (and obviously it was nowhere near us when we had been in the water between a bit after 6 and 7:45, right.... that’s what I tried to convince my wife anyway).

(Side note: the last two shark alarms that have happened while I have been at the NBSS have not appeared in a timely manner - or possibly not at all - in the Dorsal app. In this case I got the alerts within a few seconds of the shark alarm sounding on both SharkSmart and the SLSC app, and the other day when we were sitting in Dunes cafe at the north end I only got an alert in the SLSC app - more-or-less immediately the alarm sounded - and nothing at all on either of the other two apps. So I don’t know if there is a feed problem or there is some sort of moderation delay in approving a report going out on them but in both cases they were genuine alarms from the respective surf clubs rather than general public reports being typed into the apps).

sharksmart is the official DPI app.
so if spotted by aerial surveillance will be logged straight into the system live.
SLSC similiar , as Surfcom at Belrose get the immediate info from the chopper and input straight on-line
.Dorsal is more 2nd hand info , public sightings so could explain moderation / delays.

Much better session this morning at my favourite NE swell catching mit. Rights and lefts and confidence back. It's still a very consistent 2ft south of Bateman's with lully 3 footers. Believe it or not but 4 or 5 guys on a very nice, easy to access peak from 930-1030. Was starting to get a bit crazy when we left the beach at 1130ish though.

Nice this morning at the NBSS. For a Wednesday it was like a normal Saturday morning - most of the usual suspects surfing early but very few randoms, actually very few people at the beach (or coffee shop) at all. Waves were about the same as yesterday: 2' with occasional 3' sets, reasonably well-organised but shortish period swell, almost no wind, just a very little bit of mushed-up seaweed around in a few places but generally clear (and warm again) water. I surfed the same bank in front of the surf club as I did yesterday morning, got about 20 waves ranging between ok-but-full to really-pretty-nice.

Dang I hate this time of year. We're in the doldrums here in Sydney's E Burbs. So boring on the surf-front. Anything South of Port Mac is mediocre. Need to get myself a nice 38L fish or mid-length....

    Yeah I'd back that.
That broad ridge has sat in the Nor-Tasman for weeks; sustained weak onshore flow and cool SST currents. Can't recall our last decent Southerly Buster. Tomorrow AM should produce a doozey of a sea mist around here...

In Portuguese "Maresia" which is very common in Brasil before the 'frente fria" from the south goes through.

I've surfed in Niteroi / Saquarema many times in very warm air and cold water.
Sometimes hard to see sets in the morning.
Never really nailed the reason why the "maresia" appears.
Edit: Have also experienced it at Mundaka in September/October.......like a snow white out.

    Not even close
    But it certainly is interesting
I've seen it twice this summer that I can recall but I may have missed some?
It does seem sporadic - sometimes I don't see any all summer then a few times during one.

Had a nice paddle at South Steyne this morning. Not too crowded really. The banks are excellent spreading the crowds out with good options although it was fickle, some nice runners amongst it. Very enjoyable.

Got to test the bike racks I received for Xmas from the missus, very nice machined aluminium bits. Works a treat.
Moved by bikes brand. Seems very well made :)

Quick paddle out at the LowerNBSS again this morning. Chunkier and looked quite promising but was rather fickle. It's probably much better now the tide is lower but I've places to be ...
Well dispersed crowd again, water felt cooler.

Yeah, I live inbetween Bondi and Tama and it’s 4-5 occurrences since the start of December for me. Would love to see the monthly Zonals as It’s been winds out of the NE for the last 3-4 weeks. Great for upwelling and usually light when they are sustained.

I also have a feeling that it doesn't always extend up my way all the time, since it occurs with the southerly?

Surf was rubbish early this morning, lumpy and bumpy. Then we had some rain come in from the North, wind went round to W/NW and Sunshine completely glassed off. Very nice 3ft peaks up and down the beach.

Doesn't need to be NE winds. Sustained NE'ly (zonal anom) winds promote upwelling along the coast - in turn this typically means colder SSTs. Light/slack inversion winds thereafter induce sea fog. A Marine Layer is the term coined in the States.
Yesterday Sydney coast was at the confluence of both North/South winds - but were probably quite variable under the influence of the fog.

NYD saw Bondi's water colour go from idyllic to shit-coloured in a matter of hours. Yep, it's one nourished, thriving ocean out there at the moment.

A mate got a nudge from a man in a gray suit while kayaking with his missus off Wollongong a few days ago, which got a bit of media. He was pretty spun out. First ocean paddle as well.

More of the same 25-30 knot NNE’lys forecasted offshore this evening and tomorrow.
Persistent synoptic set up this one...

At least until the weak front moves through with a Southerly on Sunday morning around midnight, tomorrow night.
