    Inspired by Teckel's sock thread.

Don't care about thickness. Don't care about money. Don't care about material. Just the warmest.

    Thanks

    For skiing or general use?

I love the silk socks I bought from Fred at the Stöckli shop in Jindy.

For my work boots, I use Explorer wool socks year round. Never too hot nor too cold, and they've lasted forever.

Long socks to wear under hiking boots. But I just want the warmest. I don't care about any other consequences.

Oh and can be bought online or in Sydney.

Ugg boots have a rubber sole. Hence a boot. Not a sock.

    Sock:
    noun
Socks are pieces of clothing which cover your foot and ankle and are worn inside shoes.

Cannot wear ugg boots inside my shoes. Doesn't meet definition of a sock. A+ for effort. F for substance. Sorry.

Saw your post about the Wilderness Wear Merino Fleece. Are they the warmest merino sock I can buy.

And which possom sock do you believe is warmest.

The merino fleece is incredibly thick, so it's seriously warm. But possum has an excellent reputation for providing serious warmth. But I've never seen possum socks as thick as the merino fleece. So I can't tell you which is warmer, because I won't wear warm socks - I think I'd rather amputate my feet. Probably the thickest merino possum ones you can buy?

My first Ugh boots, bought in about 1970, had a sheepskin sole.

    Just being picky.

Depends on how big your boots are. Many high altitude mountaineering boots have inners that double as bivvy boots.

I bought some possum ones a week or so ago, but PB was short a pair of socks so I let him wear them. Washed them and hung on the line - did not go well. Went from softest thing ever to stiff and feels "felted". Devo.

Possum fur. Actually I don't know whether you can buy socks, but the gloves are certainly good. Online from NZ?

I get chillblains [ genetic] on my toes easily so have to look after feet in cold= 6 months of the year in NE Vic.
Found best is v thin long wool ski socks that stay up around the calves then explorer socks over them. By keeping the legs warm your feet are warmer.
    Reasonable inner soles eg superfeet.
All thick socks pack down after a while .
Boots need to be a half size bigger than summer.

I use Icebreaker bushwalking socks and thicker Icebreaker socks in winter. I can't recall the name of the winter sock but definitely warmer then the bushwalker version. I originally brought
the socks for blister management-100% success.

I was researching gloves some time ago and found some old time knitted woolen jobs from Austria. Part of the process is to felt them before they are sold, as it tends to reduce the larger air paths. I've got lots of different work socks, inc Explorers, and some have felted with washing over time. These are my go to socks when i want the warmest. I would happily trade most of my socks for the felted variety, except in summer.

A long time ago I had some handspun wool, knitted mittens and a beanie that had felted. Warm and relatively water proof. These days most wool is treated so it will not felt, or felt with normal washing.

Yeah, I think teckel was spot on about the possum merino blend being the warmest. I found some figures. Not sure how accurate. But definitely worth a try.

Schnenanigans. Neither possums or sheep have wool with hollow fibres, cashmere does. In fact possum doesn't even have wool, just fur.

I would have suggested rabbit angora socks, but no-one seems to be using that fleece for ski socks. It is stupidly warm stuff.

Woolen socks soaked in Borax before washed and worn. Explorers make an extra warm sock and you really can get caught out wearing them on the wrong day. Seriously warm. I wear explorers every day and never had cold or sweaty feet.

    Neoprene.

But if your feet get cold, start with the footwear. Your boots are probably too small.

I've had possumdown socks for years, wife loves them and her gloves BUT not for skiing.

I rearely wear mine as they are too warm and mainly use them for walking around the lodge or house in winter on really cold nights. They're really quite slippery socks and very warm so I'm not sure how they'de go inside a ski boot. Feet might sweat but also slip a bit which is an aweful feeling when skiing.

I'm lucky I don't suffer from cold feet so I just use the thinest sock I can find and let the boots insulation do the job. Provided your ski boots are fitted properly and you're not over tightening them, that should be enough provided you're not in ridiculous temps.

I hope they work for you.

The borax softens the fibres and fill up all the fine holes Try doing it with the next bath towels you buy. They end up super soft and fluffy.
