Hei kuinka voit minun ystavani tele-whippet. Enjoy your little stay in my homeland before you go to the island of fire and ice. Helsinki is ok , pretty modern and for the tourist not like my home city of Lahti which is very old by comparison. It is a pity you don't have more time in Suomi so you might explore the north and Lapland. Even so there are some nice lakes around Helsinki.
The island of fire and ice is something different again , very beautiful in its contrasts of colour. Remember your daylight hours will be somewhat diminished from what you are used to and the light is different to Australia , duller for the most part.
Enjoy a really beautiful part of the world , I would encourage anyone to go even just once for you will not be disappointed.

Arrived at Helsinki 6.30 am with Finnair this morning, 12 hours from Singapore.
Finnair was great, very clean plane, really good food and lots of leg room. Only 2/3 full so easy to get a reasonable sleep.
Apparently today is the first cold day of the season, max 3. There’s a really bitter 40 k wind and as the sun’s not getting high the city streets are cold in the shade and there’s white caps on the Baltic harbour.
    Snow is forecast tomorrow.

Shelves of pickled sea creature cuisine.

Hei , churches , why do people always take photos of churches ;) . Helsinki Cathedral (Lutheran) ,then its the most photographed real estate in Suomi Uspenski Cathedral (Eastern Orthodox , so many Russians come to photograph this) and not sure about the third building but its certain you are standing on Katajanokka to take that photo.
In the deli the three words mean Freshness , Quality and Right Price.
3 degrees you say with snow on the way , good weather.

Slush day today. Hovered around zero with rain/sleet/snow all day (soaking wetness)
Donned the anti slush Sorrel Galoshes, brought out the ankle walking stick stabiliser and hard shells for a museum tootle.

Going to Tallinn in Estonia tomorrow on the ferry for a look see.

Yes, welcome to the north where many suffer "The Nordic Depression" - dark all day - and drink their brains out.

Spain and Portugal are similar, in a way
out early this morn - 8am, still dark because daylight saving doesn’t end until tonight - in Granada looking for brekky croissants, one place a regular café and on the other corner a bar with drinkers already imbibing
funny that the drunks outside the window at 2am were English speakers

We arrived in Reykjavik last night, warmer and nicer than Helsinki weather and people wise.
Staying at Loft Hostel in the centre of town.

View of the main drag from the hostel

    Streetscapes

    The city pond

    Joisus Temples

    Lotsa statues everywhere

    The Atlantic

    Midday sun

    Paddington Puffin, the trip mascot.
Big, nice hobbling sightseeing today, the daylight is subtly dimmed and ethereal.
    Reykjavik Centre is very touristy.
Will do the museums tomorrow then pick up the 4WD for 2 and a bit weeks anticlockwise circumnavigation adventuring.

Wholemeal croissants and waffles, with bottomless coffees as I write.
Picking up the car in an hour or so, then off into the real Iceland.
TBH, Reykjavik is cute and lovely but very very touristy, we prefer NP’s, so are really looking forward to getting on the road.

    No farkin rollmops, no!

Picked up the car this morning, KIA Sportage with brand new studded tyres. Upped the insurance to cover open doors being blown off and total Duco defoliation damage from high lava sand winds and other Icelandic nasties!
    The recommended must have websites
    http://www.road.is/travel-info/road-conditions-and-weather/
    http://en.vedur.is/weather/forecasts/areas/
Weather was bleak today but this is what we came for, scenery. No complaints.

Very common to have an open car door blown off in high winds apparently!

    Pingvallavatn

    Icelandic stud

Geysir, goes off about every 5 mins or so

    Gullfoss, amazing, really amazing!
Forecast tomoz is good, so off to Hveravellir In the mountains while we can get there. A lot of roads are shut already.
Auroras looking promising for next week.
