We’re just using WIFI on our phones for checking home etc, almost all cafes, hostels, shops, info centres etc have free WIFI.
We usually see another car every 5 - 15 minutes and all the lookouts/waterfalls etc have other people there checking out the vistas.
The infrastructure at the vistas are minimal as is some of the signage.
The roads are narrow, with no shoulders and are raised like causeways, which is a little daunting when covered in snow/ice and also it can be impossible to pull off to take photos of amazing vistas unless there is a pulloff area but theses are rare.
Fuel is pay and pump at unmanned bowsers, some of them in the middle of nowhere.
We haven’t used any cash just a travel card.
We’re hoping to get the ferry up to Grimsey Island in the Arctic Circle on Wednesday.
Auroras are a moderate possibility for the rest of the week.
Off to Dalvik tomorrow with the puffin.

My card got a stop put on it because i used it to buy a can of coke or similar... a couple of days in a row. Citibank thought it was a bunch of small charges similar to fraud usage (ie checking card is active before going on a spending spree) i just said 'nope its me, iceland is a no cash kinda place!'

Most frustrating thing on our trip was needing cash for a laundromat - we did it at the laundromat cafe in Reykjavik :) they help with change actually - i think thats what we spent the cash we got out for, no other use for it!

We’ve got 2 CBA Visa debit travel cards that we load $$ onto via CBA’s app and which we can lock or unlock via the app too.
We have the Visa credit card as a back up but we’ve got it locked for international purchases via the app atm.
We informed the bank of the dates we were coming to Iceland too which they documented on our accounts.
We’ve also got the CBA app on 2 phones in case one is lost or stolen so we can still easily control the $$.

Northern fiord towns, tunnels, mountains and sea today.

Akureyri, 2nd largest city (town) in Iceland

    Internet troll

Replenishing supplies, the car park was a tad slick! We headed off up the fiord at 12.30, it was still -6C
(Some of the young local esquires were doing circle work on the icy/snowy roads last night)

    Hjalteyri

    Old herring factory at Hjalteyri

    Looking east to Gjogurta

1 of 3 tunnels, this one 1 lane 6 kms

    Pining for the fiords.

    Siglufjordhur
    Lightly snowing again.
Phone pix not doing the area justice.

    3 firsts today. :):cool::D
    Saw the northern lights.
Was in a snow storm at sea.
    Crossed the Arctic Circle.
Aurora app pinged at 12.15 am, went out to a green aurora. No pix :( unfortunately as in the middle of Dalvic with lots of street lights. Met some peeps on the ferry to Grimsey who saw it a few k’s up the road in the dark who said it was better there.

Set sail at 9.00 am for Grimsey Island, 3 hours north.
    Only 6 passengers.

Crossing was cold and a little rough, wifey was fine, I was OK if I stayed on deck in the murk/sleet/snow. The American chap spent a fair bit of the voyage barfing into the Greenland Sea

    Mission accomplished!

Grimsey Island, lotsa Arctic Chickens flying in the “breeze”

Aurora index pretty good for tonight but complete low cloud cover and snowing.
Off to The Troll Mtns tomoz

Thoroughly enjoying your reports and picks. A mate chased aurora's around there earlier this year. Think he got to know the snow clearers pretty well. Cool seeing places like the big waterfall in better light/perspective. Keep them coming. Still lines here.

Aurora gazing last night at Osar

Thanks to Dylan and Shannon for sharing these pix from last night
My iPhone pic was crap BUT I’ve now downloaded an Aurora photo app which lets you take time lapse photos and alter iso settings etc on the phone to get good Aurora photos like this (taken last night on a friend’s iPhone with the app)

As opposed my embarrassing bog standard iPhone pic!

Another amazing day of varied and stunningly beautiful scenery, driving from Osar in the north to the western town of Grundarfjordur.

Seal gazing on the black beach, Hunafjordur

Hvitserkur, a petrified troll caught by the sunrise

    Icelandic sheep

Car-nivorous Icelandic farker, bit some Duco off the car! Top rental insurance bebe.

    Following the stark white road

    Another frozen creek

    Another roadside attraction

    Looking east from the Hvammsfjordur

The magical fishing town of Stykkisholmur on Breidafjordur, the largest fiord in Iceland, the reverse view is of snow clad mountains.

Subtle green moss covered lava roadscape
High Aurora index tonight - puking snow though.

The Aurora swirls around and constantly changes in intensity and shape but the colour isn’t quite as intense as in a time lapse photo. Blardy awesome though!

Did circuit of the western Snæfellsnes Peninsula today. Mountains, lava fields, craters, sea cliffs and stacks, wind and snow - awesome

Kirkjufell, 10 minutes down the road from the Hostel.

Kirkjufell and waterfall (drones prohibited :))

    The lonely church of Inglaidsholl

Looking east from sea level over lava fields to Snaefellsjokull 1464 M

The western most point of Iceland

Saxholl crater, a tad breezy, Snaefellsjokull NP

Lava field, blue bay, mts ho hum after snowplaning through a mischievous wind drift on the pass.

Pingvellir, the birthplace of western democracy, female drowning executions, the rift between tectonic plates and frozen waterfalls

The Pingvellir tectonic plate rift. If you watch closely you can see the North American and European tectonic plates moving apart at 1 - 18 mm per year here

    Lucky +1 can swim.

    Oxararfoss

Icelandic snacks, dried fish, wifey smells like the cat’s breath!

@Telemark Phat , the nearest we got!
    Did 2,700 kms exactly anticlockwise.
Car was great, as were the studded tyres and 4WD, lotsa snow, iced road driving / 80%.
Only didn’t get to the western fiords, not enuff time or the inland as the roads were closed for the season.
Pretty keen to come back for some BC fiord skiing in the future.
Homeward tomorrow, Reykjavik to Helsinki 3.30 hr’s, Helsinki airport 8h’s!, Helsinki to Singapore 12 h’s, Singapore airport 6.5 h’s ( transit hotel shower & zzzzz), Singapore to Sydney 8 h’s then train to home.
An amazingly beautiful and scenically diverse country.
    Thoroughly recommended.
I’ll do a cost breakdown soon.
See you on the other side.
