Years ago (before snow making and the supertrail) it was the norm to open Snowgums to Bunnywalk.

Correct Pig face, Antons seems to always fill in nicely, as long as you stick to the groomed trails where the snow usually gets blown to,

Yea, I would have thought that Supertrail from Snowgums to Bunnywalk, while providing some more terrain is pretty pointless, especially when you can't think to anywhere else from it, and it is only on snowgums, but I guess they are ultimately aiming for the whole supertrail asap

Re: Thredbo 2011 Reports & Pics Thread

I couldn't take it, arriving in Sydney on Monday night and seeing all the snow falling. By 5:30pm on Tuesday I had to something to feed my addiction. Even with my car stuck at the mechanics and needing to be in Wollongong on Thursday morning I slid into Thredbo at 1:30am. I awoke to this.

Check out how well it was holding to the top of the banners. This is 6:30am.

Yep slid into Thredbo because the roads were covered - not the biggest dump but good enough. And the pow was dry.

At 1:30pm I sent the guy who had joined me in this spontaneous overnight adventure back onto the hill.
1.5 hrs later he came back saying it was crap. That was after spending all morning finding freshies off highnoon, at one time I was standing deep waist deep snow, 2m from the supertrail trying to dig myself out.

I'm now back - 30hrs, 1500km. When leaving, another shower of snow was falling, whether it was windblown was impossible to tell as the day had ramained cool enough that little had fallen off the trees and icicles still hung from rooftops in the village.

I would think tb's skied Funnelweb, GCB and quite a few ungroomed boundary runs quite a few times.

What a difference a day makes. Too warm last night, Highnoon was bullet proof. I need some edges. Still, sunny day, Merritts softened up nicely, quite a good snow depth for this time of season, and I teleid with quite a few different people, one big crowd from Bungara, that was fun.

    Antons tomorrow.

I didn't think today would compare to yesterday, I'm even more glad I made the effort. So tired now, I was awake at 6am and still haven't caught up to the work I was doing on Tuesday.

    Need sleep!

Today was fun. Antons was OK, Highnoon was ugly early with loose cookies, but came good a bit later, Merritts was great. A day for maching with the skiing backpack and co, good day on the planks.

Met RS this morning, but didnt see him on the hill, you didnt get stuck at FF did you?

Today was much like yesterday, but a little thinner at the bottom, with more people and terrain. ST was open from slogums, but I heard it was open from Kosi this arvie with a 50m walkout.

Met RS again, and ended the day with a run. Must of looked like a funny lesson with a mix of alpine and tele.

Good to see you again Liberty Skis, and I look forward to the demo day.

Saw your daughter in the Merritts park, Dadsnowbus, there is a Prado parked next to me.

    Heres hoping for some snowmaking.

Noticed in some earlier piccies that they do not have the normal orange fence set-up to control crowds at the lifts. Maybe just cause there have been no crowds? Or have they done away with any control at all with the e-gates?

If you mean at Cruiser I think it's just a crowd thing or lack there of.

I have always assumed it was to make sure no one cam flying down into the crowds around the restaurant. I'll ask about it next week, if I remember, when I'm standing in front of the right person.

    Saw the tracks.

They opened Basin today. ST was excellent up the top, very wind blown, snowmaking in the first half of the night meant skiing onto Kosi.

Back home now, already wondering when to go back up.

Think I spied you at FF kiosk this morning tc.
I had the disco BC Mont Bell parka, disco NTN boots and an expression resembling a cats arse as I stuffed my knee crud/crust bashing at DHG on Saturday.
I thought the conditions were goodly all over (except the bottom 1/4), but could only ski 80% mach cos of the knee, which now looks like a basket ball after the drive home.
    Skiied Merrits/HN/Antons/ST/Basin.
Hopefully the knee will behave in a weeks time for the annual family TBO week.

Noone turned up at the Intermediate flag for a 2pm lesson, so I went for a run with telecrag and K10. Yes it must have been amusing to see an fixed heel instructor in front of two telemarkers. You've got a fair bit of pace with the free heel.

High Noon held up well despite the warm conditions but the runout to FF was in dire need of more snow. It's been super cold here in Canberra so hopefully the guns have been blasting up at Thredbo.

Wow - didn't get a chance to catch up with you RS as I was out skiing with a mate. [IMG]

I was amazed at how good the snow was up high on Supertrail, High Noon and Cruiser! Held up well all weekend!

Taking the skis off for the last 10 metres to the Kosci Chair was worth it on Saturday...

All in all a great season start up high - good start to the cover. Down low needs more cold nights for snowmaking , but it's sooo close...

You got one of the highlights Hobber, that windblown up top of ST was excellent. Second only to wednesday.

Another highlight was formerly white ski suits at FF, hahahaha.

Queenslanders make tele spaced bumps down skiers left on ST, for telecrags to play on in the afternoon. Really fun, fall line, quick. I got up around 2.39 and a half pm. Looking pretty good, I am wondering if the off piste might soften up tomorrow afternoon, for some funsies off Karels.

    Go snowmakers.

According to Thredbo's facebook all lifts to be open on Saturday, so Sponards making its debut and Ramshead on Standby, this would have to be one of the earliest that they have had all lifts open, 2nd day of July, pretty impressive

Not bad after only 1 real snowfall. Those strong winds must have blown a lot of snow off the range into the resort.

    Oh really?

Only a groomed track is really skiable on Antons, I expect the same on Sponars looking at the area. It's good they are open, but not much terrain is really skiable. Getting the Supertrail open to the bottom of Kosci is huge - Little Beauty / True Blue looked close to opening as well due to the snowmaking...

Checking the cams they've done a lot of snowmaking on FF and bottom of Kosci - [IMG]

according to Thredbo, in a good night of snowmaking they can make enough snow to cover the SCG 1m deep.

Given thats the whole mountain/snowmaking system and Thredbo is a bit bigger than the SCG, does anyone know how much deeper the snow would be on say FF after a good night of snowmaking?

Well have a look at the bottom of the Kosci chair on the cam. There was basically no snow from the bend in the distance to the chair on Saturday arvo.

edit: Hehe - just checked Facebook - I believe it was a 'Perfect' night of snowmaking [IMG]

I don't think that snow down low will see out the weekend at Thredbo sorry to say.

snowline will be around 1500-1800 when the rain comes.

Re: Thredbo 2011 Reports & Pics Thread

Pretty good today. Snowmaking started early, then stopped for a bit, then fired up again later. Hit Wiamea for a few runs, its getting good, the off piste is solid, and softening a bit, but choose your lines. Nice big moguls on the top of ST. Groomers were great. I believe the word is 'bluebird'.

I got told off by some guy, probably from Sydney as he seemed uptight, for going too fast. Man some people, he reckoned I was out of control. Probably never seen a tele before. Admittadly I came close, because he propped, but I saw him looking worried, and even said dont worry mate I wont hit you as I went past. Wonder if it wrecked his day.

1500 will be at the start..there is quite alot of moisture at marginal temps from the second band.. though it will rain to 2000 as well at some stage

Interesting statement on the Thredbo report there, decent amount of effort required to get to Karels from the top of Kosi but I am sure if you get there, then you will be greeted with no queue

    lol!

Karels is open, but you can't get there. Clever! That'd be like having Sponars and Antons open, But Gunbarrel, Snowgums and Kosci closed!

Seems to be an awful amount of ski-doo tracks on the cam looking NWish from Eagles Nest, so I guess they must be running ski-doos seems like an awful lot of effort for not that much more terrain to be opened up

News just in from the mountain crew - Sponars is ready to go but will be on stand-by tomorrow due to the solid cover in the off-piste where we cannot groom. They will assess it again in the morning but with well below zero temps expected tonight it is not likely to open

Re: Thredbo 2011 Reports & Pics Thread

I had fun today, but the skiing was pretty ordinary. Pretty firm. Apparently when Basin broke, people had to ski around the Bluff to get down, with beginners and intermediates, it was carnage. Coldest night for me in Thredbo last night. Finally. Fair bit of gravel turning up around the place, Eagles Way of course, but some other areas too. My skis need a tune and some ptex lovin already.

Who makes the trek to Karels when the off piste aint on? People who are there on hols, and want to ski australias longest run. Good on them I guess.

Let us know how the w/e pans out RS, reckon I might head up again next Tuesday, or Monday if its snowing.

basin is a critical lift for the mountain, you would hate to see it broke for a while.
