hehehe. glad it didnt come to that..

we arrived last Wednesday to rain and thought 'here we go again'. However at about 9pm that night big soft flakes started drifting down, much to my 5 and 10 year olds delight.

had 3 really good fun days skiing. Thursday and Friday were lightly snowing/sleeting and vis was pretty average however the snow on Thursday was still good albeit a bit wet. Friday was solid underfoot and brought a few people unstuck but after a day of skiing in low cloud the sun came out at around 3pm on Friday to reveal a beautiful snow covered hill glowing in the afternoon light. God I love it when its like that.. Had a few runs on Antons and made the most of it until I had to head back to FF to pick up the grommets from ski classes. Its amazing how quick they learn and amazing how 5 year old boys just want to jump off everything (chip off the old block)..

Saturday was bluebird but as others have said pretty firm underfoot. Lots of edge scraping and wobbly boots on the offpiste but a good day to have an explore. Golf Course was OK in parts and my one annual run on Funnelweb was just as expected (rubbish).

All in all a great few days, kids had fun, adults had fun, beers/wine/schnapps consumed, dinners and lunches relished and minds reinvigorated from being in the mountains again.

    Bring on next time..

This is definately something that Thredbo can improve. The lifties overseas are ultra happy, and are always telling you to have a great day or whatever.

Re: Thredbo 2011 Reports & Pics Thread

Heading to Thredbo for the first time on the weekend and looking forward to a change from Perisher. Not overly impressed to hear that the staff are like that though... At Perisher I usually have a quick little chat to all of the lifties (esp T-bars) the staff in green, staff working the tils etc etc... And for the most part they're pretty friendly! Will see how we go anyway.

Quick question though, looking at the reports I'm a little undecided as to head down on Sat or Sun.. It looks to be fairly windy on both days (30ish kmph) which we don't mind, and will hopefully make the queue's shorter - but can anyone recommend a better day to head down? I'm pretty keen to avoid super hard runs/ice because my wife is still very much a beginner, so the softer the better!

I've got 14 days of mostly weekend/ long weekends at Thredbo this year and I always thank the lifty. Especially the lifties loading t-bars. I have always been acknowledged normally with a " no worries ". And I don't have any problems with the service or manners of the staff. Though if you were American or have spent the last 20 years in the US I may understand your problem.

Over the past 7 years of skiing Thredbo, never had an issue with lifties, only with dickheads in the lift line!

    Ditto

I ski Thredbo a lot and I also know some of the Lifties and Lift Supervisors
Even the ones who dont know me are polite and out of the 3 lifties on a chair at least one says hello.

Every now and then the Lifty organising fours and singles etc looks stressed or has to yell at some idiot's but that because their job is like a kindergarten teacher trying to get 5yr olds in a line
( why do people have trouble getting into fours and have to be treated like children)

Anyway I cant believe you said hello to 7 Lifties and none replied

The ticketing system hasn't really been a problem for me, my friends or my family either

Sure, I met a few on t-bar duty who were professional, attentive and jolly.

But the rabble on Merrits duty on several mornings was a discrace.
When a lifty balls out a beginner for not lifting the bar in time and subsequently crashing......well.....there are not prizes for taking the p!ss out of a beginner you big man.

And the lack of attention to sustained lift ticket issues is just having a laugh at the expense of customers paying full wack.

I fully accept the odd lapse of service quality. When I hear its a sustained issue....then you know someone is taking the p!ss.

I've been to Thredbo many times and never had a problem with lifties, they have always done their job, cordially. some seem to go out of their way to chat to everyone and joke with them [IMG]

I suspect anywhere in the world you will always find a few who are still hung over from the night before and not feeling so chirpy

I couldn't care less if they were chirpy. The market place says they don't have to be. Just basic manners is fine.

But I'm not taking a shot at the lifties per se....as I said....there were some who were ace. But I give the example of that experiment I did with a number of too-cool-for-school lifties, of the couple of bus drivers who just grunted when passengers asked a question (again, the other half were friendly and cheerful), of the unresolved ticketing probs, the variable wait service at resturants....knickerbocker first class....a place that starts with T and ends with Bar just a joke.

So mixed feelings. But I expected more based on the price paid (my mistake).

Note: What I did see, was every lifty being very very vigilant about seating children securely on the chairs. Shows you can very quickly instigate widespread consistent changes in practice if you go at it.

And that is precisely the attitude that came off some of the staff I met.
And one that probably holds parts of the Oz ski industry back from attaining excellence and value.
But there were just enough good-uns for me to give it another go.

Hey hp, were you there during school horrodays? Even I get the shits with people then, and I am the most patient person on the planet.

I really love June and September up there, more local feel, everyone you walk past says gidday, and everyone is in a great mood. Pity the skiing is not as good. The atmosphere makes up for it though IMO.

Hope the Bo treats you better next time.

Unless you are from Sydney, in which case you may never be happy [IMG]

Nah, just after the school holidays I think. Which may explain things if staff are "coming down" off a week or 2 of wrestling school kids.

Is it September? Did I drop a month?

Pretty fun day skiing. Showed Ziggy around the hill, including an exfoliation session off Karels, actually got some weird fresh wind blown something, I hear its called sprowder. I really quite enjoy spring skiing

    in spring.

Evening all. Its been a while since I've been here but I'm heading down soon and I cant wait.
Looking at the cams...Is the place really that empty? The Kosi' chair line never got longer than one at smiggs.(yes I know wrong resort)
    What are the crowds like?

Today was even more 'spring'. There are no crowds wr7, the longest line I had was one time on Basin. Pretty bloody fun skiing if you like spring skiing. Got a tuck lesson from Milto, watch out world record, not.

Yeah, spring slush bumps and no crowds. Thin cover at the bottom but good fun up top. Looks like it will remain this way until Saturday/Sunday.

Re: Thredbo 2011 Reports & Pics Thread

Did a sneaky double half dayer, yesterday and today. Yesterday I was having fun on a few little wind stashes around Merritts, and Micheals Mistake areas, sw facing slopes. I discovered at Merritts a disadvantage of twinnies, everyone sees the rooster, so next lap its over, kinda gives the game away on a variable pack. The final run down Highnoon was disgusting. I cant even call it snow.

Today was pretty good, wind did its job o/n up top. Plenty of nice snow to be found, cold breezy morning. Bluff and Sponars was fun. The run out of Cannonball on Little Beauty was a bit technical, but managed not to ding the new boards. (Technical usually means shit).

Then I had to come back to work, which is seriously cramping my style, knowing full well it was going to dump all afternoon (Got a text, thanks). Should be a good weekend, for those even more bound than me for ski days.

Re: Thredbo 2011 Reports & Pics Thread

Spent friday at Perisher and Saturday at Thredbo.

Perisher was ok, good extensive cover but pretty icy or soft. Needs a freshen up thats for sure. A lot of melt/freeze going on.

Saturday at Thredbo ... took the gf there as it was her second day and she was sick of falling over on the concrete at smiggins. Friday flat really is the best place to learn to snowboard (aside from the high possibility of getting run into).

The snow elsewhere was ok, pretty firm though and quite a few sections of sheet ice. Antons and sponars were good, esp up high. The supertrails were icy. Best snow would have been around merrits after they made some on Friday night.

Basically, this weekend confirmed to me why I only go down one weekend a year, and when I do I go to Thredbo. But, I had fun, the weather was super, and the beers at Black Sallees were awesome.

and for all my whinging on this post, I know where I'd rather be.

I arrive at Thredbo on 23 August for a few days. I've never been there before but looking at the webcams it appears that cover is looking a bit thin and could really do with a decent top up (without the rain afterwards.) Would I be correct?

Re: Thredbo 2011 Reports & Pics Thread

Hi Kimski, Thredbo has the most vertical of the Oz resorts, so the top is high and the base low.
There will be heaps of snow up high on the t bars and Merrits and the base may be patchy but you'll still probably get more vertical than other resorts.
Remember Thredbo also has great snowmaking to top up the lower runs
There is supposed to be good snow this week so I sure you'll have a great time.
We skied top to bottom in the last week of September last year.

Thanks tele-whippet, I'm sure it will be fine. I'm just a worrier. Sounds like I'll have to learn how to use T bars. Believe it or not I've never come across them!

So who else is heading down for some Spring skiing in the next few weeks? We start our annual long stay on Saturday the 27th for 8 days. Looking forward to it regardless of the conditions - no matter what it still beats being in the office.

    Any other tragics?

I will be there on and off, until its off. But I think it will only be a few runs in the mornings, then head out back, unless we get more snow. I was going to go for today, thankfully pulled the pin. Had a call from a friend up there who said its raining all the way up. Still not happy that work was what made me decide. Boo hiss.

Probably head up for a few days next Thursday, which might mean some w/e action, maybe another mach run after work RS? Actually maybe better before work.

4 weeks early. Seems like the season has gone down to 4 weeks of good snow, July or August, good luck picking it.

They need to get the covers on it, like cricket. Be fun to watch, maybe made of carpet, so you can ski on top in the rain.

Actually I did mention that they should extend the carpet at the bottom of kosi, all the way up the hill, it skis quite well.

Re: Thredbo 2011 Reports & Pics Thread

My first Thredbo trip was for a week from the 13th of September in 2009. I suppose the conditions late August this year will be much the same.

Interesting to note that there seems to have only been a couple of years in the last 15 or so where there has been less snow at the end of August than there was in the middle of July - 2006 and 2007. Hopefully we don't add 2011 to the list of shame.
