Thought I might start a stoke thread. It doesn't need to be solely about the snow, it can be off mountain too.

    Amp up the vibes.

I might start by getting someone to remind me what is new this year? Was it eagle way snowmaking?

I am going to try for every week, mostly midweekish, but chasing snow, so you know....

Hoping for a week end July, and a week end August/early Sept as well to try and get my days up.

Up for a slide with anyone who wants, but I am retarded. However I give you a standing invite as guide chivemaster, but this time I will follow you.

    Re: Thredbo 2012

Our family is looking forward to a big year at Thredders. Due to the HSC we have booked our week long trip in the second week of the school holidays to limit the impact to our youngest. We are also looking at every other weekend, either in a lodge (when the wife comes along) or camping (just the boys).

Wifey has a new pair of Fischer Koa's to try out, and I am waiting on delivery of a new pair of K2 Rictors.

    Can't wait.

    Re: Thredbo 2012

I'm lamenting the fact that the July hols seem to be getting earlier and earlier. This year (in NSW at least) they go back on the 15th. There could well be bugger-all snow that early. A couple of years ago some people I know who went for the first week of the hols did more bushwalking than skiing.

And the September hols are too late for decent snow most years. Can't bloody win!

Last season was the best for schoolies in a while. Even the Qld'ers didnt miss out. Not often there is off piste in shoolies. Fingers crossed for a repeat of the start of last year, but if it could just keep going this time.

We got some awesome days in the second week of the hols last year - it stayed cold as well so you could ski all day. Went back in the last week of August and by lunchtime you were in slush,

As Telecrag said - let's hope the falls start early and continue throughout. 2011 was the year of the downgrade [IMG]

Season pass, a new pain free knee and definitely more weekends and also long weekends to ski this year, hehehehe.
We will also book in for the family skifest in the 2nd week of the school hols.
    The countdown begins.
No matter how bad people lament it is, we always have a good time!

Looks like Perisher have a 5 day pass to be used within 7 days as part of their New Promotions Package.
Has anyone heard if Thredbo are going to run the same or similar promotion?
Two years ago Thredbo had a 5 day any day ticket, for me this worked really well.

Got onto the season pass last year, for my daughter and me,

prebooked in 1 - 8 July, 17 - 26 Aug, and 30 Aug - 2 Sept, at our lodge so far, probably look to get some weekends in if possible / snow permits.

Looking forward to getting back into Thredbo after a few years mainly skiing Charlotte Pass.

I have had great days skiing in pretty awful conditions. If the company is good, then the snow quality is far less important.

I've heard it said that if you can ski in Oz then you can ski anywhere because you're used to pretty much any conditions. I'd exclude powder from that as in 16 years of skiing Oz I've encountered elephant snot twice and powder never.

I agree P A. My first encounter with powder was in Japan and my approach was too slow so got buried on the first turn. At least going faster and turning less is much easier to learn in powder, than trying to turn on 50 degree angle lumpy boiler plate, or 1/4" thick sun melted and refrozen crud over a foot of soft.

You must live in a hut on Kosciusko. I have skied regularly since 1983 at Perisher and thredbo and never encountered anything remotely like Japanese powder in all of that time. Fresh snow yes, floaty powder no.

I have experienced really good powder at perisher on a few occasions in the last 3 seasons. You just have to know the stashes. I go to japan every year too so I know what real powder is, to say you cant get good powder in oz is plain wrong cause you can.

I've never experienced the overseas powder that is raved about.

However, I was in Thredbo in August 2010 and that was brilliant - soft, dry and windblown (By Australian standards at least!)

I have no O/S experience, but sometimes when its knee deep, its easier and more fun than others, lighter, floaty, kinda froths up between your legs. Had one waist deep at Devils Playground, a few boot deepers, and a few knee deepers at Thredbo. Doesnt last long, you really have to be there at the magic moment, which is mostly in the blizzard at some point. Have had a couple of clear weather ones, but not many. Had a knee deeper one on the Supertrail once, that was freaky.

That's June. I reckon there's 4 or 5 cm of base under that soft stuff. A good day to rent skis (or board) instead of gouging your own bases to bits on the rocks.

Not at all. I still ride that board and it barely has a mark on the base.

PA the picture of your board in the snow tells me that it is not in true powder, unless you lowered it real slow. In powder the indentation walls would not be smooth and you would not be able to see your board. If you dropped your board from about a foot there would be an irregular hollow with your board buried underneath.

    True powder won't bond.

Nowada, any loose fresh in aus gets called pow.

Staying as high up as you can is the key to finding proper here. >1800m

I've skied in Australia from about '83 as well and never encountered anything like a 50 degree slope. Have seen some pow though...
