    Re: Opening W/E

I don't know about three decision to open the slope, but this is what we had at the Merritts this morning. About 5cm on top of the tables. Spots underneath the guns can be as much as 30cm. Guns were on when I arrived, but have since been turned off. Nevertheless, it was snowing at the upper half of the slope and coming down.

I think, with snowing tonight and maybe some snowmaking, if they push snow together they can open the walk about and ball room tomorrow.

Worth hiking up from the village.

    Re: Opening W/E

I overheard a lifty asking another lifty if he will be working at the gunbarrel tomorrow! Although it can't be used a confirmation that the area will be open, it means we're close... So close. I'm certain I'll be riding the Cruiser Express when I come back again next Friday.

This conversation between the lifties better be true soon, otherwise there won't be anything to ride on. See the current state of Friday Flat.

I regret not being prepared for snow-walking. I don't have snow boots with me now. Otherwise, I'd do a bit of venturing up top from Merritts to Kosi along the Traverse, Village Trail, Supertrail and Evil way, and see if Evil way is still evil and do snow report along the way.

    About time.

These photos were taken on Friday about lunch time. It was freezing cold and windy. I had to put my goggles on on my way down cuz it was too windy and snow got in my eyes. Cover was about 10-15cm back then and I suppose they get some more now.

Some NSW private school hols start this weekend, It wouldn't surprise me if they keep it closed till then [IMG]

FWIW one of the ski patrol at my lodge said the telltale (for merritts) is if they are running Merritts chair in the morning, not cruiser.

I worked a season at Thredbo in the 90s and I recall them trucking snow from Dead Horse Gap at night. Not sure how nat parks felt about that? But it was a particularly crappy season.

Bit dismal this morning. FF is a blue run haha. Had a chat with a friend who went off the top yesterday, said it was very hard going. Might do a couple of runs on FF (day count haha) and maybe go for a doodle up the top. Good time to get a private, poor buggers are standing around. waiting waiting. No snowmaking last night.

I'll be back on Friday and will literally cry in front of Friday Flat sign, moaning, vdo clipping and posting it on Youtube if nothing changes from today ie no snow fall, no snowmaking, no cruiser.

Thanks Dos for all the photos & updates.

Was wondering in your travels this coming weekend if you could see if there is access from the top of Woodridge to the new High Noon extension?

With a bit of luck there will be enough snow and you wont have enough time.

    Re: Development @ Thredbo

I'm not sure of the specifics, but I have a feeling they stockpile (or it naturally stockpiles) above cruiser and they push it down late season if needed.
Be interesting to ask a groomer these sorts of questions, my guess is that Thredbo being half below the snowline, the groomers push a lot of snow from high up down the mountain as the season wears on?

No, there isn't any new access from Woodridge to the new HN runout.

ps. I've just realised they had remove that small we talked about earlier. You can see the side of the run is high where the hill used to be.

Skiers and snowboarders push snow down the hill during the day and groomers push it back up the hill at night.

    Re: Development @ Thredbo

There's nothing to do with riders pushing snow down. At this very moment it's about creating rideable surface to let the run open for public use.

No point saving the snow for late season when they can't open the run now -- if trucking snow from up top down to the run is a viable option, that is.

With the possible exception of some strategy driven decision (school hols), if they could have that run (any other run) open they would, the marketing would be invaluable.

dunno about that! I pushed more snow out of position on my skis today than I did on my board [IMG]
    (oh..and at Perisher...not Thredbo)

    I would have to agree.
I speculated that they may hold until the weekend for the day trippers/weekend warriors - while those of us that have been languishing in the village for 2 weeks and go home on Friday suck it up. But given the condition of Friday Flat I reckon if they could open Cruiser they would.

If nothing changes I will be shocked if they can open FF at all tomorrow. I was shocked that they did today.
But yet I am still hoping Cruiser gets up and running before I leave.

Any thoughts on why thredbo sseems to be missing all these cold nights that BOM keep forecasting?

Even Selwyn claimed overnight snowmaking last night

Staying @ Thredbo Wednesday Thursday and Friday night and planned to ski on Thursday and Friday. If Cruiser isn't open by Thursday morning we'll be buying perisher lift passes.

I do realise that one night of snowmaking can yield amazing results but will it get Cruiser open/Friday flat back to skiable by Thursday morning? I really don't know, but god I hope so. If not meh i'll make the most of it and ski perisher front valley for 2 days with the girlfriend.

As an aside. What has more vertical? Friday Flat or front valley perisher.

    No problem.
On skis it felt like a black run [IMG]
On a board more like a Cruiser green.
Definitely more fun than Friday Flat.
But I'd be happier with Cruiser seeing as I have a Season Pass that hasn't been used yet.

Give us a shout when you are around, we are here till Friday lunchtime.

I am beginning to think it'll stay closed until the weekend Dos.

I've heard reports that all it needs 'is one good night of snow making' to open, a number of people seem convinced it was likely to be open today - but snow report this morning says no. And the FB update from Visit Snowy Mountains is:
I'm gone Friday lunch time. Be nice if it opens earlier.

Guns are still on at Merritts at 8.34.

Current temp at top station is -3.6C
Theory says Temp decrease 6.5C every 1000m increase of vertical
Merritts house is about 300 lower than top station so temp should increase 6.5x300/1000 = 1.95C
Therefore current temp at Merritts house should be around -3.6+1.95 = -1.65 owwww

I wish I was there I'd hike up again and see how much snow it has. Cam doesn't tell us much in that regard.

Been snowin on and off in the village, would have got a few cms higher up. It all looks purty. I might xc up and have a look for you dos, dont think I can be bothered with FF again, but I am on a day count....

Guns went until about 9 I reckon. Be surprised if they cant get it going tomorrow, should be a big night on the guns. Got nearly 12 hours last night. IMO you will be better off at Merritts dos, unless they get some snow made on ff.

I will look out for you.
