I note that the Thredbo village cam is no longer functioning.

Anyone know if there a particular reason for that?

The rope they put up last year first day was merely an obstacle.

With this much snow the bluff could easily be an avalanche risk at the moment.

Yes, I've seen it go and there would be enough snow to bury someone. Remember that a snowboarder died off High Noon a few years ago when he was buried by a cornice giving way.

That's why ski patrol put ropes up. About 10 years ago they had a decent avalanche off the bluff. Some of the blocks of ice were the size of small cars.

Does any avalanche control happen in Thredbo? Bombs, ski cutting etc? Ropes and closures are appreciated, but there's always someone who'll go poaching.

Last year a well known patroller got caught in it as they cut Bluff, hehehe

It would be a really fun part of the job.

I believe it, it's maybe the most wind loaded area on the mountain. Stanleys Gorge seems to avalanche once a season or so, perhaps a reason that pitch is clear of trees..

I wouldn't be worried about being buried so much as being swept into rocks or trees or all the way into the horrible terrain trap of ramshead creek.

Many years ago a ski patroller and myself had to dig a woman out on the bluff, lost her skis and needed a change of underwear but was ok.

That's roughly what happened. Dropped off the side of H/Noon towards the top on skiers left; there is a very steep face that drops straight down into the creek that runs through there. Similar situation to now ( though not quite as massive a dump); early season, 50cms on no base. The whole face has apparently slid with him; at the bottom was a massive rock forming a small gully as it was at the exact opposite angle of the face. He was swept in there by the snow and just buried tight.

So go hard but be careful out there.

It's probably not a place that ski patrol do much work on through there.

With the Bluff though, the slides I've seen happened above Little Beauty and True Blue, and it levels out a bit there so normally they seem to stop before getting to those runs.

OK, I'll go with lucky too

Some pics from today. First day on the hill this Australian season since Japan in March.

Surprisingly good cover if a little dodgy off piste on the shrubs. Snow has suffered some freeze-thaw cycles and was hard work on the open runs. Very, very windy today. Kosi chair on wind hold from when we arrived a midday. Snowgums open. Merrits was open until put wind hold at about 2:30pm. Dream run was open, so could slide down to the bottom of High Noon without having to download on the old Merrits chair.

    Video of swinging Merrits:

    Looking down to Merrits cafe:

Big Merrits Queue. Calm before the storm of a big dump and school holidays
