    Hi All,

New poster here, just wondering if anyone has already booked their accommodation yet? I just locked in 7 nights at the start of spring. I am hoping like hell that this is isnt a repeat of last year! I havent been to Thredbo in 10 years and dont want my time destroyed.

Can anyone justify the outragous prices during winter? I found it kinda hard to swallow when I was doing up a budget.

Main point of the thread is to find out if anyone is going around the same time as I am or if its not worth the risk?

If you're staying in Thredbo, it's not too far to do day trips to Perisher should the worst case happen.

    Exact dates would help
1st week of sept most years will still be pretty good, freak years do occur like last year
That said I was there last week of August last year and it was fine, whole mountain open and great in the mornings.
2nd and 3rd weeks of September getting riskier day by day.
It's amazing how quickly things change in that period

First week in Sep is as fair a bet as most of high season for an OK base - and you get the discounted spring rates. Expect more sunshine and slick snow lower half.

Snowmaking top-ups are prob about 50% - snowmaking will only continue into Sep with the right combination of atmospheric conditions and positive economic outlook by management based on how the season has been trucking thus far. (If it's a repeat of 2013 they will have called it 'over' and sent snowmaking home)

If you're lucky there will be a freshening fall during your stay.

2000 was the last great Spring year and 1992 before that - where it just kept snowing right through Sep.

Historicaly the first week of Sept had the peak snow depth. Now it's becoming the last week in Aug. However which ever week you choose is a gamble. I'd chose a later week rather than an earlier week, snow takes longer to fall is Aus than it does to melt.

It was such an ordinary season last year that I'm seriously thinking of giving Oz a complete miss this winter. We'll either be going to Canada or Japan next January and one option is to simply spend more time on snow there instead.

But I imagine the SDS will set in and I'll weaken, so long as the snow's ok. No more booking months ahead for me though.

Oh yeah, the whole mountain was open bar a couple of runs here.
There was a lot of base, and sure the bottom was a bit sketchy but its only the last little bit that's bad.
Just got to get out early as it softens quickly and by midday it can be slush city.

In the olden days, before snow making and when there was a mid station on Crackenback, this was the norm. Thredbo top to bottom was a bonus that rarely happened more than a couple of weeks a season.

    What PA said.
No value out of a pass last year, major focus on overseas skiing = random trips if it snows.

Dinking with the idea of being a side country AT roamer with a day or two on resort for some social skiing with the youngest stepson as his “reward” for good works at school and home. The boys needs more miles to really enjoy Canada in 2015.

I am lucky I don’t need to book accommodation and Jindabyne is now only 4.5 hrs away.

“Gods Country” is now an “investment property” and the new “paradise” is an under construction “garden flat” in leafy Sydney town, 12kms from the GPO. When I say “garden” I mean 1600m2 of “garden” of which I am very much looking forward to turning into a productive “paradise” over the next 12 months. “Gods Country” will remain in the “portfolio” and the next purchase on the life plan will be the much longed for “cabin in the snowy woods” put on hold for the last 14 years by divorce and parental responsibilities.

Wish me luck and good health. Every man needs his dreaming.

I hope the Australian ski season is an absolute cracker for everyone.

1600m2 garden (or any description) 12km from the GPO? You win lotto?

I'd kill for a real garden. Suburban block doesn't cut it. Enjoy.

Holy shit batman! My "garden" is 40m2. It has a deck (9m2), a path to the back lane (7 x 1 metre), slimline water tanks and a very narrow (since the tanks went in) garden (7x0.8m2) and the rest (about 19m2) is grass.

I've done the sums - you have half a friggin' football field (except maybe if it's AFL)!

Where do you find that 12km from Sydney (I'm 4 due west as the crow flies)?

Ryde, the long forgotten poor cousin of Gladesville and Lane Cove. The property has been in the family for 55 yrs and now it needs some TLC (a lot) and being the only Sydney located family member that responsibility has fallen to me. It was all quite sudden a decision and became the answer to multiple complex family "issues" of which the defining one was "who is watching over mum". The change in planning rules for "granny flats" made it all possible. We will be the carers at the bottom of the garden :) and have committed to the plan for 5 years during which we will be "frequent visitors" to Canada visiting the TBC family and work on residency there.

Dunno, that is the napkin plan, just have to stay healthy and get up everyday and hi ho hi ho ....

There's some decent sized places there, especially the older ones built back when it was a bit of an outer suburb (and before Gladesville Bridge went up).

    Best of luck!!!

I've looked at Thredbo for the beginning of the September school holidays for the past 4 years.

Two years 2010, 2012 we had a great few days there. :)

The other two years 2011, 2013 we saved our money. :(

I was at Thredbo from mid August to late Sep. (Actually I was there most of thr time, but before mid Aug is not relevant here.)

Whole mountain was open in mid to late Aug saved Bunny Walk and Cannon Ball.

Early Sep saw bottom half of the mountain closed.

By mid of second week only Cruiser, Anton and Basin were open.

By mid Sep, Basin was the only survivor.

From 20 Sep, even the gate at Basin lift was taken away.

It was a sad and trumatic experience seeing the situation deteriorating day by day. Good thing, though, that came out if this was that I had small ski class most of the times and at least 6 times having the instructor to myself.

Wife and I are booked in for a week from July 13 (paging Nidecker and a bottle of Limoncello...). Will look at lodge availability and conditions for other weekends. Have vowed off school holidays after last year's accident. Have enjoyed some great skiing in September over the last few years, particularly 2012. But then again, we just enjoy whatever we get and are thankful for it. In my limited experience, September seems to be always good for at least 1 big dump.

Hey Dave, we are booked in 27th June-2nd July in the lodge. Will likely book a long weekend in September and see how it shapes up in between.
