just starting to think about a week's holiday in Thredbo in 2018.

We want to pick a week that's quietest, whilst still being in peak

Looking to avoid:

NSW/ACT school holidays - 7th July - 22nd July
Qld School Holidays - 1 week earlier
Uni week?
Any school or other competitions?

Thredbo havent published dates yet for 2018.

Looks like we should be targeting August

Can anyone suggest any dates we should avoid?

Made our booking last night. 10th to 18th August

:woohoo::woohoo:
Went about that time middle of the week this year - excellent not much in the way of crowds. Early lunch at Black Sals our own personal resort. Mondays are busy, Tuesday Wednesday and Thursday really good and Friday the weekend warriors start to arrive again.

Gawd talk about extortion of the unwary.

Just in the process of renting a vehicle snd I can tick a box and for only $178 extra they will throw is some snowchains.

I can rent some in jindy for about $70

The week after school holidays is the quietest mid season week. Normally third or fourth week of July.
Generally more of the mountain has just opened with the exodus of people.

Great stuff. What place did you book this time?
Mosswood 4 in old woodridge.

The main priority of the trip (apart from seeing snow for what will be 14 whole months) is to get Nikki’s boots sorted.

She has a new pair that we are foing to get Andy to fit and if that doesnt work consider another psir of boots

Anyone tried the new Vibe hotel at Canberra airport?

Just booked a night there directly through them and worked out cheaper than all the trivagos etc could offer.

Also booking that one allowed us to rent a car the next day and avoid one extra day of car hire plus hotel overnight patking

Yes!
We stayed there the Thursday night before Opening Weekend.
It was perfect.
Great room, early night, up early and on the road. We got the car straight away so we could leave most of the bags in it and go before dawn.
I’d stay there again in a heartbeat.

Good stuff though we won’t leave bags in cars for fear they won’t be there the next morning

Stayed there this year! It's great and if you run out of firewood, just call Steve Forbes in the morning and he'll get his supplier to fill the firewood storage for you that afternoon.

Don't bother. Thredbo is below the snowline so you don't legally need them. If the weather's bad when you're going up hire some in Jindabyne and drop them off at the servo in Thredbo; if not go up without any, and if it's bad on the day you leave you can hire some at the Thredbo servo and drop them off in Jindy. At least you could, last time I checked.

good to know, but we'll probably head off to perisher/CP on one day of our stay, so $70 is very bearable and becomes a one-off convenience

You don't legally need chains in Thredbo but with any luck it will dump while you're there and you'll need them to get out of the village on your last day

Yes. My experience wasn't so great. Proximity to the airport for an early morning flight was the only benefit. For such a new hotel it had a lot of maintenance and cleanliness issues.

My favourite reasonable cost hotel in Canberra is the Aria.

Good luck.., lost track of the number of times I’ve seen folks turned back at Penderlea on the way to Thredbo because they did not have chains. It can appear to be ok from Jindy... then even for those that get past Penderlea, the hill above Ivos sorts them out.

Unless of course your in a 4WD...

I have never, ever, ever had trouble driving to and into and around Thredbo (or Perisher) in an AWD with regular tyres. I've been here for 16 winters now, driven in all kinds of conditions.

But that's an entirely different discussion.

Woo Thredbo. Yay

oh I agree, its more the driver than the car.

However, the only vehicles I ever see in the ditch are 4WDs

I think it’s delusional levels of self confidence at play. They think the AWD or 4WD will just grip on anything and consequently just drive too fast for the conditions

For various reasons we have been staying a night at the Vibe every second week recently and enjoy it esp if you ask for a room overlooking the runway so you can see the planes landing. We have often left things in the car in the basement and have not ever had a problem.

Read the small print on your rentals. Many of the deals don't obviously disclose that you're not allowed to drive them in the snow in winter months. I've had this issue in Australia (it was an insurance rental while the car got fixed. I yelled and screamed that I LIVED in Thredbo, wasn't going on a bloody holiday and they grudgingly let me off the hook) and in USA (couldn't hire in California to drive to Wyoming and back).

Yeah I book through europcar and tick the snowcover box which allows me to take it above the snowline.

That was $230 on top of the $690 base rental.

In fact if you tick all the optional boxes, gps, full insurance, snow cover, chains, baby seat then the options cost is over 200% more than the base rental

Once you're in Thredbo, do you need a car? Have you considered a transfer option? There's a couple of people doing it now.

You could probably buy a local shitter and sell it after. Like a backpacker in Europe! There are a few on the Jindy Noticeboard for under $1K rego'ed.

Village car parks full today.

Town bustling.

Riders, trail runners, families everywhere.

Glorious morning. Rain due tonight / tomoz.

Some of the crew rode the hill, some of us did a short jaunt up the Cascades trail.

Its still 2017. You arent allowed to post that in this thread LOL
