I recon I'd have a crack at that. No need to leave the ground, just slingshot around the berms and bumps.

Honestly, my main complaint about these special courses Thredbo builds, is that they're never open for me to ski! The cross course on High Noon, the moguls course on the Supertrail. I bet this thing is closed too because of "reasons".

Especially the moguls course. It's always freaking closed. Surely you traditionalists can get behind that continuing to be built, and also open to the public.

From the website this course is closed for competition till Friday then open to the public on Saturday and Sunday this week. It was the same with the Banked Slalom course - it was closed for competition on Friday - Competition was cancelled on Friday and moved to Saturday but the course was then open to the public on Sunday.

I was riding Antons with a patroller on Saturday afternoon and he was talking about how great it was. Had no idea what he was talking about until I went up again on Sunday and I could actually see it.

What a morning! The snow on the top half of the mountain was great and Supertrail, although format the bottom, was better than it had been in weeks.

I think the groomers loved having some ‘proper’ snow to work with.

Marketing has a purpose. It’s not an end in itself.

If the marketing doesn’t increase revenue it’s just wasted expense. You may as well not do it.

So sure if the marketing increases revenue, do it. If it doesn’t, you don’t.

Clearly you see great value in the parks. I don’t, and I don’t think most customers do either. I suspect there’s barely any return on the investment, if there’s any return at all.

I’d be curious to know what the cost is, and what the actual return is.

We’ve skied the holy bowly course (when opened to the public) in previous years and it was great! The only thing that I’ve found is that in spring time when the public gets access it if it’s been sunny/warm it can get a bit sticky which makes it hard to maintain speed across the flat.

Countless large organisations struggle with actually being able to define the return gained from marketing expense. It's very difficult to measure the impact accurately, down to what investment drive what behaviour. In strategic terms though, good business operators understand that there is a need to invest in marketing (and infrastructure) to at the very least maintain the brand perception and the experience. Have a look at many businesses balance sheet and you'll see that brands/trademarks etc have a value assigned, as an intangible asset. It takes more than a calculator to run a big business

I agree with the need to maintain brand perception. But back to my original point - who cares? I just suspect the % of people who care, or it helps drive positive perceptions of Thredbo, is tiny. I suspect the biggest impact is on teenage boys - a small penniless market.

There’s always a chance I’m wrong, but I suspect unless Thredbo marketing chimes in we will never know.

This thread incidentally is the first I’ve ever really seen any great enthusiasm for the parks outside teenage boys.

I think I get what you’re trying to say, but you’re just perpetuating sexism there and I have to point it out.

Plenty of girls/women ride the park.

Our whole group spends about 50% of trips in the park. We're all in our mid-30s and roughly 50% are female.

Oh that’s just offensive and ridiculous. My perception is based on my lived experience. Had I experienced teenage girls expressing enthusiasm for the park in any numbers I would have said so.

I can’t alter my actual life experience to pretend something existed, when it didn’t.

At the recent Australian interschools 32% of slopestyle competitors were teenage girls. 72 girls, 152 boys. Still less girls but the cohort is growing and far from insignificant numbers.

As I’ve said, i think it’s profoundly offensive to make a call of sexism. Skiing’s demographic is notoriously male skewed. The park in my observation is even more male skewed, and skewed to a very young demographic.

If you want to pretend that’s not so in order to pretend I’m a sexist (when anyone who knows me will virulently argue against you on that) then that’s on you, but as I say I find it wildly offensive.

I'm sorry if it seemed like I was attacking you, that wasn't my intention and I certainly don't want to get into an argument with you, especially in a stoke thread LOL The point I was trying to make is that whilst the park and snowsports is male skewed, that is precisely why so many groups are trying super hard to change that, break down barriers and reduce intimidation of women in the park (and other areas). Personally it seems to me that emphasising that only teenage boys use the park goes against everything we are trying to do and it didn't sit well with me, considering I've found the forum to usually be super encouraging of everyone of all ages and genders.

Instead of being offended and defended yourself based on what you think of yourself. It is worth considering how it might be perceived by others.

It's true that teenage boys (and girls) will be influenced by a snowboarding competition, and it's true they're penniless.
    But they won't be forever.
In ten years, they'll be at uni, and when faced with the choice of thredbo or perisher, they'll go with thredbo because of the positive perceptions of thredbo they have previously gained from events like this.

And the reality is that they have significant sway over their parents (the wishes of the child).
Thredbo is just as marketing to the parents, as it is to the teenage children (and people in their 20s).

I reckon Thredbo is marketing to the masses here.
Even crew that have no interest in the Holy Bowly will be interested by such a build....

I'd suggest a lot of their money comes from that.
That's part of how they make money beyond the cheap season passes.
Race costs, squads, making lifetime skiers, etc.

Yep see all those parents standing on the sidelines - if you look closely you should be able to see the wads of cash floating out of their pockets into the resort banks. Adult season pass holders are generally not a huge income stream compared to families whose kids need lessons, development squads, and then coaches. Plus new equipment every year (man they grow fast), lots of hot chocolate, merchandise and lunches. They are also the income stream of the future and have a large influence on resort choice.

What you mean like the demographic predominantly using the park IS actually mainly young men? If observing how things actually are is perceived by others as sexist it’s not really on me.

But I appreciate the insight :)

Anyway my comment wasn’t about the sexual composition of park users, but the return on the investment. I’m pretty comfortable in what I said. Maybe the resort can chime in with a fact based comment? (I’m dreaming - the resorts seemed to stop participating on this site long ago)
