When i broke my ankle early last season the doctor kept telling me i should try and get a part refund on my season pass. I got 4 full days use out of it before injury day. I was with the doctor for about 30mins and paid close to what the season pass cost me. I told him if he was so concerned about my finances he should give me a refund on my medical bill!

I agree entirely, except the “happy” bit.

If it was back at the $1500 level I suspect my loyalty to Thredbo would be unlatched, I’d go ski other mountains for a week each year (Hotham, NZ), and maybe increase my Japow skiing by a week a year.

I do 50+ days at Thredbo though.

Did the prices also drop in Mehicho when Perisher started the game?

I had a similar experience a couple of years ago (2016) when my son broke his collarbone a week before we were due to ski. I got a credit for his ski pass and used it the following year. I don't think we had to pay a cancellation fee.

They’re all owned by Epic now aren’t they, Buller aside?

I’d presently do about 20 days. But I’m borderline about Thredbo nowadays. With a young child in tow it’s just not feasible to do every weekend (or near enough) as I once did. Plus I could t be bothered driving that much even if I could. So I’m now a week, or two separate weeks, plus 3 or 4 weekend kind of guy. That’s for 3 people. Plus on mountain and off mountain purchases of course.

Paying $1500 x 3 just makes 9 days in Hotham and 2 or 3 weekends in PB (or Thredbo if I didn’t get an Epic pass) that much more attractive. Just as I say increase the Japan stay by a week, which is better anyway.

Yeah, unless you are loaded, if you are a week or two visitor, Id just go NH. It might cost a little more overall with airfares, or it may not. Possibly cheaper to go NZ from Sydney for a week?

But then if it was about money, I probably wouldnt ski at all. Or like when I didnt have money, it would all be backcountry. Because, I am an addict.

From my viewpoint the only reason Thredbo introduced the 'early bird', low-cost season passes a bunch of years back (maybe 2013) was due to Perisher introducing the same thing. Lo-and-behold, two days later Thredbo popped up with the exact same price for its own season pass. Without Perisher leading the way I expect normal season passes would likely be close to $1,800 today.

    True.

I do think though the passes have also introduced behavioural change, with more people holding season passes, skiing more and presumably consequently spending more.

I just edited to add I think the other big change in Australian skiing is Japan. It’s proximity, much better snow and if you care to look much cheaper prices means it’s a big behaviour changer for Oz skiers.

    Kind of what I’ve figured.

My biggest ‘value’ feeling is that I have done and dusted the payment. If I ski an hour on a given day, I don’t have that horrible feeling of ‘man, that was a $150 hour’. I just ski and go swimming or something. Same in MTB season.

We’ve just had three average/above average seasons in a row though so will see how I feel if it’s a wet windy summer followed by a low-snow winter LOL

Yep, gives a much more satisfying feeling when you decide at lunch time on Sunday that it's enough and we can drive home without getting to bed at midnight. Also good for summer trips where you can mix up your days, bit of lifted, a hike, TVT etc, but not have to squeeze all the lifted into 1 day and the other stuff into the other. +1 won't do more than 1/2 day lifted bike each day so that also means I get to go more :)

Geeze you've got me worried now. Bought 365 passes for family on Sunday evening after getting email on Saturday saying passes rise in price in 1 day and however many hours ie midnight Sunday. Did not look at total cost of passes when I bought them, just the down payment amount for credit card working on assumption they were still $949. I'm pretty sure I got in in time but there is now full amount owing on my receipt, just the deposit amounts and it appears Thredbo shop does not show this info in your account/profile. Hhmm now I need to give them a call.

The prices went up again on 16th so you should be locked in at the cheaper price if you put a deposit down on Sunday.

For real bargain season passes go to Tomamu in Japan.
A seniors pass is only 22 000 yen if purchased before November 1.
They believe a senior is 55 years old there too.
An adults pass is 27 000 yen if purchased early too.
The downside there is trying to get your skis back on if you fall over.

And if you absolutely, positively HAVE to meet people for lunch at Kareela it doesn't cost you a fortune to get up there.

Spring has sprung, 14 degrees on the car dash when we pulled up this morn. 8:10am and 10 cars from pole position Friday drive. Intermittent drizzle this morn. Enjoying some early morning poor mans powder.

Four great runs this morning with the snow getting progressively worse each run. Rossi Racecourse was the pick of it. Now we’re on lighting hold. Seems Perisher received a bolt of lightning and the weather is north westerly so it’s all shut down for the moment. This afternoon is forecast to be miserable.

It’s certainly miserable now. Sheets of rain and howling wind.

Still, I can see people skiing High Noon and Deathbarrel is turning on the live camera.

Well it's been a good year. Skiing tomorrow and Monday so busily readjusting my expectations to the new late spring reality..... but not going to lose hope yet of seeing just enough snow fall and blow in with the cold air for the tbars to fun on Monday afternoon!
