I'm expecting cold debris to fall here, don't think it will get hot. If Berridale is going to get in trouble it will be later this summer. My place had never been as neat and tidy as it is today.
Jindy RFS website. Station 338. Post says a couple of extra trucks will join the crew to help defend Thredbo. Teams have arrived from West Tamworth, Armidale, Narrabri and Gunnedah. Two of them stay in Jindy to react as needed. Two of them join the guys in Thredbo. https://www.facebook.com/FRNSW338Jindabyne/ Lovely message on that page. Worth a read.
Dawesy just posted again. Clear morning with light breeze. Clearer and lighter than was expected. Three extra fire crew units are in town to help. Smoke increasing a little this afternoon. Fire 10km away - the Pilot's Lookout blaze. Better than expected thus far.
That ominous orange glow that we had in Canberra in 2003 is now showing on the live cameras. Let's hope Thredbo gets through this.
In Jindabyne the light is exactly the same as it was in Canberra. We can see TV pictures from 200 metres away!
Dawesy is a legend. They're going ok. The sky is a bit orange, it's 36° in the pump shed, pumps are regularly shutting down as they're overheating, they're getting some 'dirty' power which is also shutting down pumps. Like most technology these days you have to turn them off and on again.
Seems the cool change has arrived. Temperature at Thredbo top station just dropped and the humidity almost doubled. Wind direction is listed as 'calm'.
Cool change came through here (Strathbogie Ranges) around 5pm but the squally winds are horrific, it's going to be dreadful night if everywhere else gets this weather. Fortunately we're SW of the Euroa/Balmattum fire so out of danger (for now), even though we've heard a bit of helicopter action.
The Cams have gone multicolour Edit: notice that the snowguns are on down the supertrail, Meadows and the NASTAR track
Light AF easterly in at Thredbo now. Smoke would be settling. The humidity from the easterly would be pumping into those PyroCnm Hence the skies.
Those colours may be real conditions but it is also possible that the image enhancement algorithms are in meltdown trying to correct for colour balances beyond their tiny minds.
There won't be much wind now IMO...light easterly as the trough passes while the southerly bends up the coast. Showers will develop.
Perisher lodge cams look normal https://www.ski.com.au/snowcams/australia/nsw/perisherblue/perisher-smiggins-gunumalodge.html
Exactly. Unlikely to be affected by colour balancing algorithms. I habitually run my shots through a Photoshop auto adjustment process. Sometimes it is an improvement, but with photos of fog and haze or other unusual scenes it will go quite bizarre. Always interesting.
Needs a grey reference card in the image! In Photoshop if there is a known white or grey you can balance the image with that as a reference point.
There is a lot of testing that needs to go into any changes. At Landgate (WA, Satellite Remote Sensing branch that provides remote fire obs to FESA), the policy is no changes to operational services during fire season except in emergencies at the specific request of FESA. Various parameters of fire behaviour models can be set at runtime, but significant fundamental model changes are way above & beyond what can be done as a quick fix.
Colour has been changing all afternoon. Good to see the snow guns fired up as bushfire equipment. The kossie walking trail looks like snow but I guess it is ash. Here's hoping everything is safe and they manage to protect everything including the accommodation there.
I got out of town yesterday after our test fire, I left Jindabyne as well. Last I heard was that they are doing ok so far. Winds have dropped. Still having power is the important thing.
Snow guns pumping away. Seems most of the lodges were left open with the fire hoses unwound ready for quick use if need be. All the dry fuel was cleaned away. Place must look quite tidy.
Nearly went to the opera house for nye. All seems pretty calm here for now. The smoke is hard on the eyes and lungs though.
One noteworthy post from the Vic fire thread. Seems the fire front went through Dinner Plain without burning anything - it was expected to gut the place. People are being allowed back into the area to fight. This is nuts.
