Don't know about new, but 2018 and 2019 had new tracks that were quite suitable for beginners I feel. There are some hard ones if you (or your family are feelinf adventurous), but plenty of easy going ones for family as well. I like to think of it like skiing. (and I know next to nothing about skiing at Da Bo so yep) You arent gonna go for your first day ever to the top of the subertrail and bomb it. Youll take your time in the beginner area's (which I think is FF) and work your way up.
Never mtn biked Thredbo. Lot's of good to great trails where I live around the Gold Coast and hinterland. I'm happy to drag ski gear around the country and the world but can't be arsed doing it with bike gear in the off season. Plenty of other good things to do in Thredbo in summer.
I think one of the real technical limitations of a XC MTB is that without dual suspension with decent travel you really struggle to maintain effective contact between the tyres and the ground. Then without that, steering and braking is severely compromised. Then you crash. And then without the heavy duty body armour the risks of a bad injury are higher.
I found the flow trail down crackenback doable about 10 years ago after I hadn't been on a bike for 10 years. I did have the Thredbo dualy and body armour on though. Would have been a fail with a K-Mart bike and no PPE. I'm too afraid of the injuries and bike bills to take it up seriouly.
This is something that many forget actually. There are a few loops around the base areas that don't need lift access, and good to do some basic time on the bike and get the skills right. Though probably more relevant if you're staying in the village. Plenty around the lake if staying in Jindy A couple of other watch outs. It's normally a reasonable weather, but it can still be a harsh day under the sun out on the bike all day, whether up at Thredders or around the lake. Plenty of water and all that other stuff to remember The lifted stuff is not just about skill, but it can also be surprising how fatiguing it can be in the 'attack' position for all that time, especially if a little tense. Hard to enjoy that end of day beer when your forearms are on fire But yeah plenty to do in summer down there. I've enjoyed some drives over the top and down to Tom Groggin, Scammels, and even a Hydro tour.
Didn’t even know the loops around the bottom of Da Bo existed so there you go. Learn something new everyday
As a kid I can still vividly remember the first time one of the big flies bit my foot through my shoe. I was wearing Aeroguard, too. Nasty, nasty bastards.
Summer in Thredbo sounds like paradise................ You're not selling me on this. I can save thousands by staying at home and still get attacked by insects.
IMO, there are only 2 things that are less than ideal at that time of year Woolworths on a Friday night, cause every single family and their dog has to get food and the insects. With proper insect repellant and clothing, you can mostly handle the bugs. I find the trick with Woollies is to be 6ft and not be the chicken when someone is walking towards you and not paying attention
Yep, that is something not many people do, but is great. Fantastic road from thredbo down the back. Stop for breaks and little explorations at Dead Horse Gap, Tom Goggin Campground next to the river, Geehi flats campground next to the river, then Scammels Spur lookout for the best views of the Western side of the main range or "Westfall" as local boy @Kelpieboy calls it. Go all the way to Khancoban if you have time. Makes an interesting full day. See a huge variety of different environments and vegetation changes. Beautiful scenery, especially by the rivers
Conditions good today, firm and grippy on the TVT after Mondays rain. Section after first bridge closed due to trail maintenance with a helicopter bringing in gravel and dumping directly on the track.
Pics of last snow in Falls and Ego Alley. There's a patch the size of my coffee table in The Bluff and one not much bigger in The Basin. Another above Cruiser lift and of course Summer drift.
First time at DaBo since Feb. Wow everything is green (including the Monaro) Sunday arvo, this side of the hill is emptying
Yes Easy Street joins the flow track. You can also start out on Easy Street then join Ricochet which goes down the gunbarrel side and tends to have a few less people testing out how fast they can crash. The Upper TVT is a awesome days riding for less experienced people but my advice would be not to continue past Lake Crackenback Resort onto the Lower TVT unless you are well prepared. The lower TVT is more technical and much more remote - is something goes wrong there is no easy way out. Another great place to get riding experience in the area is Bungarra. Just out of Jindy on the Barry way a couple of $'s will buy you a day pass to some nice trails, skills area and pump track and its usually pretty quiet.
Lake Crackenback have an awesome xc course around the perimeter of the resort that is great fun. Only 35m elevation so anyone can ride it. Gets used regularly for xc and dirt triathlon racing. 10km or so with 4km extension along the river for advanced riders. Lake Crackenback is my favourite xc course closely followed by Bungarra.
Awesome day on the bike with @telecrag and other Canberrians. Lovely weather, minimal crowds, sore body from a good all day work out. (Hey pub people aren’t your supposed to be enforcing the Covid QR check in’s.....just saying!)
Are you referring to the trails around Jindy? @DidSurfNowSki and I came across a new flow style trail near Tyrolean village, lots of fun!
Not new. Just formalised. The pink trail at Tyrolean has been recut into a flow style trail. But it was always there.
