Very rarely do I ski before the 10th-12th of July.
last couple of years were exceptions. The best years i've skied were all late starts

I’ve only been visiting the NSW resorts regularly since end of the 2017 season, so I think I had a misguided sense of how long the seasons usually are LOL

1990, 1991 , 1992 are my benchmarks... First years of Australian skiing .
Put it this way. You know those orange poles on the way to Perisher ..on the road? After say sponars?
I never saw them until 1994.

Agreed, I continue to be astonished that Perisher is persisting with saying that season pass holders will just be able to turn up to ski from 13-July, and by implication that somehow that can be done while the overall resort capacity is reduced to 50% on any given day (including say a sunny Saturday in August).

As someone with a Perisher season pass (and who has NOT been able to book himself a single day of skiing) the fatal flaw in what they have done is there seems to be no "skin in the game" for a season pass holder to book a particular day then NOT bother to turn up. Watching the cameras in Perisher the last 3 days the place is _empty_ but it is "sold out", as is every other day that ticket bookings are open for.

Personally I would have made the rule that if a day was booked by a season pass holder and they didn't ski then they would be charged to their linked credit card the same amount as a day ticket holder who had purchased for that day then didn't ski at all, so they have the same level of downside risk in not turning up.

Thredbo's system at least puts everyone on the same basis (risk/cost wise - nobody at Thredbo is going to book a day then not turn up without an awfully good (medical, etc) reason, then the resort can resolve that with them on a case-by-case basis) and guarantees a limit of skiers per day is being maintained.

The poles were plenty visible in '93! My first season was '92 so '93 was eye-opening...

My first season was Thredbo ‘88!

Pity I wasn’t old enough to remember it

Opening day '93 was pretty good - I was on the front cover of the newspaper as a 6 year old on a snowboard. Went downhill rapidly from there... my all-time worst snow crash was on a toboggan on ice later that month. The memory is still painful LOL

These charts serve to remind me of my worst performing years of uni - 1996 (first year, failed 2 second semester subjects), 2000 (failed my post grad unit), both due to riding epic seasons almost every second weekend. No regrets, given how few and far between good seasons like those have been since!

Honestly, Epic wasn't so bad. Managed to reserve both weekends so far for both of us with few issues.

The website was slow but at least it recognised me as a season pass holder.

I had the same experience. Was also counting on the system not recognising our 2019/2020 Epic passes but thankfully it all worked albeit slowly and with a few timeouts.

haha a little older, but not by much - just asked mum and apparently I was just over 1yo, and we went to both Perisher and Thredbo! Seems like I was a fence-sitter right from the beginning LOL

Yeah I haven't used it often, the only times were either to download because I was drunk/injured, or early season when the traverse and sundowner weren't open. I reckon it'll be handy when all the other lifts go on windhold to get people down the mountain too! I wasn't there last year when that happened, but the queue to merrits chair looked horrendous

So say I win lotto and start my day in the village.
We want to ride Merritts/Antons area.
I'd be tempted to catch the gondie to the mid station. Then ski down to Gunbarrel and up that way.

Gunbarrel was quicker if you were at the friday Flat end of the village. On windhold days and you want to ski Boundary Rider........

As a ski lift it’s an access lift really...
It will safely access children up to and down from Merritt’s in a full ski school group to step up after Friday flat. I wonder if they’ll make the Gondie a lesson meeting area?

The only time you’d consider it a Ski lift is if dream run was pumping and you went mid to top with a little walk up to access.

I’ve done that often on the old Merritt’s chair. Village to mid, down to Gunbarrel and laps of high noon.

Mid station never used to be open when we rode Thredbo.
So we'd drop our boards off the lift and jump off.
Then climb the fence to get out.

    Was pretty common.
Usually a nice grass area to land on..

If you are driving down from Sydney to Jindabyne tonight be careful at Geilke Creek Bridge between Equestrian Centre and East Jindabyne. A truck caught fire and the clean up is in progress. Oil and sand on the road.

So the gondie opens at the same time as everything else, hadn't thought of that. Is there any point in that? You get to Merritt's and wait for Cruiser to open ...

100% agree and even after watching what happened they still got it wrong.

And all of this is before / if further lockdowns.

don’t get me wrong I acknowledge there are a few 20+ day skiers who won’t win but the vast majority of us will be better off in the long run. Even if I wanted to ski more days I have nowhere to stay.

Having said all that I don’t think anyone can say who got it right wrong to the end of the season. But right now most people committed to skiing Thredbo have tickets, same can’t be said for Perisher.

it will suit us in a normal season as we will get the gondola to Friday Flat, ski down and drop off the little man at ski school then join the gunbarrel queue. Heaps better than the bus and having to walk up the hill to ski school.

Dream run laps will be a new thing. Also top of Cruiser to mid station laps. Village to mid station. Mid Station to restaurant. Mid Station to village. So many combinations.

Also the main reason Cruiser opens late, is because it took a couple of hours for the staff to get there via the old chair!

Sorry Zac there are a lot of skiers who usually do more than 20 days but can not afford it this year. It is a shame because after the fires destroyed summer, people were really looking forward to winter.

That said I am unsure what options Thredbo had.

I don’t disagree there are 20+ day skiers (I am normally one) but my point is what proportion of total season ticket holders would fit this? Personally I’d guess low. Sure many on this forum would qualify but would even they /we ski 20+ days this season given difficulty camping etc?

If you own property in Thredbo or Jindy absolutely you have lost out.

as an aside my lodge in Jindy is very Perisher centric and the smiggins lodge basically has zero bookings and very few at Jindy. Normally this would be at 80% by now! This is 100% down to the uncertainty of getting tickets at Perisher.
