Spotted a poor girl on skis who wouldn’t have managed Cruiser battling her way at down high noon - needed a lift down on skidoo, was still battling her way down on our next pass.

Then spotted a girl on Friday flat ready to head up with hired snowboard in WELLINGTON boots.

Seriously, we need some advice given. The mountains are for everyone, but it needs progression/instruction.
Hotham and Falls early 80s was no different.

How would you approach this situation?
Pointed out the girl on HN to ski patrol.

Did nothing re the girl in welly boots, but if she turned up to my class I’d explain that she is going to injure herself in welly boots, needs SB boots and refer to supervisor to a sort out. Too freaking dangerous to teach.

If I was on my own I would’ve taken the ski girls skis and slowly heel slid down the hill behind her at the side of the run until we got to the bottom and told her that High Noon is not for her until she is skiing Cruiser with confidence. (Wouldn’t be the first time)

It's pretty normal to see people way out their depth on High Noon and Merrits.
I have actually guided people down, just doing big traverses. Sometimes because I felt sorry for them (had conquered the blue at Merritts and though it would be OK) and sometimes it was because they were drunk and wearing fishnet sexy gear....

One cannot spend their winter rescuing people, it's impossible.

What do you do about the multitude of people having a grand old time sliding down the snowy shrubbery above the beginner carpet?

The ones in the creek under EDI

Dream run is the classic "oops, this ones a bit steep" run and then ski patrol put a big fence and slow sign chicane at the bottom just to increase the degree of difficulty.

It's a glorious circus for everyone.

Long live the ski circus

Would double like if I could
Who decides when you can progress to the next run?
If it was based on lessons then no-one will in 2021 because you can't get a lesson
And anyone who has ever skiid knows days on snow does NOT correlate with progression

True that.
I’ll harden up.
I’m still at the rescue everyone stage.

There's not too many groomed resort slopes in Australia where you can't just take your skis off and walk down. That's usually my advice to the terrified punter facing uphill looking downhill with fear in their eyes
True.
But if they’re battling that hard they’re often struggling to walk downhill AND hold onto skis. Many times I’ve taken the skis and acted as a barrier behind them as they’ve walked. Pain in the butt/ waste of good ski time, but ultimately a good deed. Bit higher skill level you can talk them down.

Teaching them to side slip is the safest way down. If they are in boots they will have no way of digging in like ski edges if they start to body slide downhill. An English tourist became a quadriplegic in Thredbo many years ago because of taking her skis off. She ended up smashing into a boulder and snapped her neck.

Will require some serious marketing as a snow play area to attract snow players from the more we'll known PB/Thredbo/Jindy circuit.
100%, was legit talking about that in the car on the drive down to Perisher today. Corin forest should invest in that strategy and Selwyn needs better marketing on the come back, but hopefully doesn’t charge like a wounded bull for a season pass either.

agree-Thredbo boilerplate isn't a walk down option

Teaching sideslip is a key part of early lessons as is advising on where to ski and where not too and how to use the lift system to suit ones ability.

The sideslip is why it only takes 3 days to be an expert snow boarder and a life time to become an expert skier.

Corin sells tickets for snow play. And they sell out. No ticket no entry.

Agree.

So whats the answer?
I believe that today’s problems on the Alpine Way were as direct result of the Police closing the Perisher road and leaving the Alpine Way open. Am I right in thinking that there are more entrance gates on the Perisher road? If so the potential problems should have been considered before closing the AW.

If the NPWS‘s priority is to take the money there are many more potential snowplay areas on the Kosciuszko Rd. They could widen a small section of the road so cars could stop, install portable loos and what ever else is needed. The only areas on the Alpine way that are suitable for snowplay are at Cascades and DHG, These areas are very small considering the potential that the Kosci Rd offers.

Would need a minimum 100 car parking lot. Snow play, sightseeing cohort is substantial and growing.

A huge market.

Do you think this girl had lessons?
I’d be floored if she had. So many don’t.

Definitely need options outside of current Jindabyne area for snow play. Good places to start. You could set up a separate snow play area near Perisher/Thredbo which will help but still ultimately puts them on the same roads out of town.

Maybe each gondie cabin needs a fully stocked bar that automatically unlocks for the download. Incentivise people to download rather than ski down via High Noon.

Just put one of those snow slug machines up the Barry Way somewhere!
Ingebirah State Forest has terrain between 1600-1700m. Would require some serious $$$ to convert some fire roads to sealed roads for access though, or a lift starting closer to Barry Way that could take mtn bikers in summer.

Drove down from Canberra for my 1st day of the season yesterday. Best snow i've seen on opening weekend since 2000! To echo other peoples thoughts, there was a huge number of snowplayers/sightseers, even the overflow car parks on the old tip were full when i left at 320.

On the hill, crowds were minimal till about 1030, then the hordes swarmed in from nowhere. Still, i skied onto lifts pretty easily, Cruiser was the only one with any queue and given i was riding solo, using the singles line meant i didn't wait more than a minute or 2.

Which meant i was completely shagged by the end, quads were screaming no more! Still pretty fun first day for season 2021 - probably better than most of the days i had last year to be honest.
