Once again headed to Thredbo this morning. Road was totally clear up until just past the Twin Valleys rest area, then it was a little icy. By the time I came back down it had been cleared and gravel had been thrown on it.

It snowed a lot between yesterday morning and this morning. Time to go skiing? It would be up top, and I've seen Friday Flat open with less.

I'm actually looking forward to a day or two there this season. Hopefully when it's "on" as they say.
    Looks good.

Probably a silly question, but when it snows like this out of season, can people catch the Kosciusko express lift with skis on and ski down?

    Yes and no [IMG]

You can take skis up to go backcountry skiing but technically you can't ski back down the supertrail

The resort won't like it. But you can ski back down. The worst they'll do is take your pass (whoopdidoo single ride ticket). It's all national park.

If you want to ski out of bounds, do a car drop at dead horse and ski to that (slight walking required from eagles nest). It's going to be more shrubby / rocky than a summer-groomed supertrail though.

    oreo is right.

Honestly, I don't think there's actually enough on the bottom half for safe skiing. I really don't think it would be worth it. You'd be better off hiking out from Charlottes or on the summer groomed areas at Perisher.

Also take into account that Snowgums is running now while the Kosci chair gets serviced, so it's a bigger hike out to DHG or Sig Hill

What was 'last year's episode'? It's routine for the lift to be shut this month for pre-winter maintenance.

I think it lost a roller last year and was closed for a while

Nice pics Mr Wang - very tempting to go for a slide

Yep, and it was chaos on the snowgums chair for 2 days, the queue went all the way around to the kosci. They couldn't get the story straight either, kept saying it was on windhold when it was more than obvious it was mechanical.

Cin, you should know that sort of stuff happens all the time! Look at the hours those lifts put in each and every winter, at every resort around the world. It's frustrating as a punter I know, but a token part of skiing. It wasn't just a 'last year episode', and the maintenance closure of the lift right now won't necessarily be stopping any further issues happening this year. You just have to take a deep breath, grab a coffee have fun with your mates instead of getting pissed off with the mountain staff (who are more than likely even more frustrated and pissed off than you are!!)

Funny you mention that! Saw exactly that in Chamonix one year, but the guy forgot his hammer, instead of going back and getting it, his mate just starts throwing the thing up to him! Took a good 10 or so go's before he actually caught it, he was dangling with one arm attached to the tower and his legs twisted through the bars. Everytime he missed the thing would whack against the steel tower and bounce off and shoot straight back down towards his mate below, who after nearly getting hit the first time resorted to chucking it up and bolting! Even funnier was how each time it fell in the snow the guy on the bottom could barely find it!
