I'm casting my mind forward to next year as we haven't been able to get a short ski break in this Aussie winter this year. I've seen photos of crowds at both Perisher and Thredbo and I'm shocked.
We usually go for a few days (Monday to Thursday) in about the second week of August. I'm deciding on an Epic pass or Ikon pass because we will most certainly be heading for a North American holiday too. The state of mid week crowds at both Perisher and Thredbo mid week are a minor factor in the decision. Which is usually busier?
    Thanks in advance.

Provided there’s no wind hold, it’s not school holidays or races!

Watch August dates. There’s a public holiday mid week in August for Brisbane show day. Lots of Qlders and Qld schools go down that week. Jindy Central doesn’t do school skiing that week due to lack of instructors.

Also check nswinterschools for state dates, generally 3rd week of August, at Perisher next year.

At Thredbo if you ski the green & blue runs at Merritts, or stick to High Noon and Supertrail, you'll get traffic all the time. The black runs at Merritts and the runs under Bluff and skier's right of supertrail starting at about Little Beauty get relatively little traffic. True Blue is deserted most of the time and it's certainly no harder than High Noon so long as the snow's ok.

I can't really comment on how to avoid crowds at Perisher as I don't slide there enough.

I ski both resorts each year, passes for both, my one indulgence. It’s six of one half dozen of the other. For every packed day at one, it can be the same at the other. For every wind blown pow day with no crowd at Eyre, I get the same at Sponars/Antons. I always get there early so parking isn’t a problem, but it’s clear now that if you are a late starter in the mornings you may be turned away from Perisher with skitube your only option. OTOH some seasons Thredbo can melt down a lot faster in spring

I have a carefuly researched spreadsheet covering crowd avoidance tactics at both resorts. They do however have a major component of bar stool entries

I haven't really encountered the sort of crowds at Thredbo that I have at Perisher.

    But Perisher is better. :)

I think queues are more of a dilemma if you don’t know a particular resort and how to play the dynamics.

Just avoid chairs at Thredbo and it’s ok. But that means never coming back down.

The queue at International T bar at Mt Perisher on a wind-hold day. One of the better queues.

You should see the queue on Slowgums on a real wind hold day, thats why we carry skins!

    Or Kosi at Easter, wow!

At thredbo, there is a small point in time where certain lifts will get bogged down.
At the same time the rest of the mountian and lifts are deserted.
get through them and move on, wait 1 hr atleast before returning to the same lift.
Eg. gunbarrell is always going to be packed at 9.30am after all the parents have got their kids into thredboland, its the only lift out.
but they all think the same, and wont return all day so 1hr later you ski straight on while Antons and cruiser pack out.
    Ski resort Psychology.
    Go against the grain

One fine (sic) day, Slowgums was all they could get going. It was about an hour to get to the top. I did three runs, amazing, but I was almost hyperthermic.

    Perisher is a bogan magnet.

    Thredbo is a wanker magnet.

Pretty rare day that happens, its unusual to not get Gunbarrell going. But that day, no T's, nothing. The queue was 40-45 mins. Weekday.

    Same.
Mt P or every single pair fixed grip lift in Japan - those bastards take you OUT!
I’m so used to doing it I’d been bumping chairs for PB all season, then my friend and her man arrives so we went girl girl boy boy... the boys got slaughtered! PB had forgotten what the lifts were like and I wasn’t there to run interference.
PB went up just after lunch with the same mate as above. Turned away. Thredbo carpark was full at 10am o_O
They just went around to DHG for a split, before heading back to Jindy for the start of Splitfest.

I’ll be up when the crowds settle.
No way post surgery me is crowd surfing. Hanging out in Cooma until the dust settles.

    Well Perisher is better...

I enjoyed waiting almost an hour to get onto the ridge chair last year. This was on the speedy singles line too. The longest wait I have had this year during peak at Thredbo on a weekend was at most 15 minutes, on a windhold day with with only slowgums running, it was terrible. I was really looking forward to standing there for at least 45+ minutes.

I heard Thredbo set a record during interschools week last month. Around 7,500 skiers on the mountain. Although our source had a hilariously exact number, which I forgot, with electronic ticketing they know down to the last punter.

I think, from my experience of only being at Thredbo during races, that they organise the queues better at Thredbo. The permanent lines setup is better (ie can fit 4 abreast, clear signage) and there is always someone there organising. I watched a group of well dressed women slide into the ski school queue at Kosi, to be asked by the queue guy where their instructor was. To which they replied "he's coming" as they slid forward. He actually blocked them and pushed them back as he told them to wait for him LOL Quite obviously queue jumping.

Perisher's queue organisation is reactive, and the setup of the lines varies according to how the lifty feels on the day.

Plus Perisher has many choke points, whereas Thredbo has 2 bottom points, and if you get down there and it's too busy, there's always the bus. Too many places in Perisher where the only way out is to hike or wait.

There's a NSW bank holiday in there as well - first Monday in August.
