    For the benefit of the majority, who are the owners of Thredbo Lifts pls?

    Are they known for owning anything else?

    Don't think we get them down in Mexico. Are they the Hoyts Group?

    Ah! Not so small. Cheers.

    Surprised there's not a Rydges Hotel complex in Thredbo? Yet?

    This is a fair comment.

    But we know they have to replace, Kosci, snowgums, gunbarrel and the cruiser as they are all coming to the end of their useful life.

    so know is the opportunity to look at the benefits of extending the lifts, and in the end you may be right the cost may benefit may mean they just replace like for like.

    A little more than that, they own rydges hotels, Q.T and have some major property assets. They also own chains in Germany including event there. There annual turn over exceed 1bn

    There is Rydges Thredbo alpine.

    They were going to try and put a qt where the tennis courts were but the cost to benefit wasn’t there. I also think they realised they could still get a lot more benefit doing the merrits as this will be able to host conference etc.

    So big enough to upgrade and replace 30 year old lifts eh?

    Then I hope Vail has put the wind up their sails!

    As I said before I’m not sure it’s in response to vail, I think it’s more to do with need. KT started the process 6 years ago and I guess feasibility studies and a negative board held them back.

    Gondola = winter snow play $$ + ski/boarding access with snowmaking on Dream Run BUT big time summer MTB access to the new flow track and lower All Mtn.

    I think the summer green season is why they will finish snowgums behind egales nest. Save the climb up the hill to the kosi walk.

    Put Snowgums up to some altitude above Karels, slap the highest lift badge on it. The lift line meets up with the Kosi walk somewhere up up beyond the creek. Try and ram through a new cafe up there too and badge it the highest in Australia too. Sell the package to sightseers year round when it’s not too windy and charge a fortune for the privilege. The future is looking green. Mid Station at Black Sallees for the skiers for the few weeks of white.

    If we're going to talk about replacement lifts that are extended, I'd be more interested in a gunbarrel that reaches the top of antons. MTB and skiers could do with that

    I just don't think they'll ever build a new lift above the treeline. They just won't. The weather's too bad. Not too bad as in "It'll rarely run" but too bad as in "It's going to get damaged". See the infamous Thredbo-Charlotte Pass lift.

    The Merrits gondola is actually a great idea I think.

    The problem with a new detachable Snowgums lift, is what happens to Bunnywalk mid station, which is actually used a fair bit for race events.

    Im assuming you can have a mid station - the detachable moves onto a slower moving bull wheel for the traverse across the midstation, then back on the high speed line for the next leg up to top station.

    I rode a 3 stage Gondola in Grindelwald 2 mid stations if I recall correctly - get off at any stage you like to enjoy the facilities at that level. It even dog legged and changed direction at these stations. I rode it a few times mid to mid to do the flying fox that was set up between gondola stations.

    It’s just about the money really isn’t it?

    Detachable mids are pricey. Thats why the Crackenback mid isn't detachable.

    Yeah, that’s why I said it’s just about the money.
    And we know Thredbo don’t like spending money...
    Which is a shame.
    They’ve “saved” so much spending in not doing these upgrades so far - if they could go large now it’d be a cracking investment for decades to come.

    Exactly. If a detachable chairlift has a non detachable mid station that is open, the whole lift has to run at a slower speed. That means instead of running at 5 metres a second, it has to be slowed down to the speed of a fixed grip chairlift, about 2½ metres a second, to allow people to get off safely at the mid station. While that doesn't reduce the number of people the chairlift can move, it does double the length of a journey, meaning customers get stroppy.

    There's value in a mid for whatever comes next on the Crackenback side. It provides an upper mtn intermediate zone to ease the load on Cruiser with a comfy chair ride ie the upper stage works well to meet the market well, it provides a reliable windy day option, would it also provide some insurance for mtn bikers in November if snowpack is slowing down the preparation of upper trails? A single top to bottom lift to the highest lifted point in Oz I think also has enormous green season potential for sight seeing/touristing IMO, like Kosci chair but bigger and better.

    Is it enough value though when keeping capital costs low appears to be a top priority?

    Reducing speed does reduce capacity unless you add chairs.

    Well the passenger capacity of a chairlift mostly depends on the frequency of chairs. It's difficult to load more than one quad chair every five seconds.

    So a fixed grip chairlift with a 5 second interval will have the chairs spaced closer together than a detachable chair with a 5 second interval, even though the main cable is running at double the speed. But they both nominally have the same capacity.

    That's rather counter intuitive, instinctively you'd think that a faster lift carries more people, but when you look at things from the perspective of how long it takes to load a chair, it makes more sense as both detachable and fixed grip chairlifts load their chairs at the same speed.

    Yes, correct.

    But if you turn the speed down on a detachable the loading interval increases reducing capacity. So having a non-detaching mid station and turning down the speed, reduces capacity.
    At the resorts I worked out we rarely ran our detachable at max speed except for the very busiest days because we didn't need the capacity and running them slower saved on ware and tear.

    That makes sense Nick, that's why I qualified my post by putting the words mostly and nominally in italics. Also what happens in the real world often diverges from the formula worked out in an engineers office, especially with chairlifts operating in severe environments with unpredictable passengers.

    It also assumes that the detachable has lots of spare chairs that can be added to the lift so they can be bunched closer together, and most lifts usually don't have that many spare chairs that can be quickly added.

    You could always leave Snowgums where it is and slap a high speed detachable next to it. Or halve the length of Snowgums to serve middle station only. Lots of options when you think about it laterally.

    I would love a new high speed Ramshead chair to the top of Karels.

    That seems more expensive than just replacing snowgums, not to mention that the snowgums line is the best in thredbo regarding wind

    I think it's a combination of line, and it being a fixed grip that does it?

    Replace it with a detach 4 with midsation(s?) would make it more useful on days like today, when racers are using it.

    I think it was the fastest chair in OZ when first commissioned.

    Meh, chairlifts will be a thing of the past once my transporter beam technology hits the market. You will just have to sign up, for a fee as I want to be a player, for my "ski locations" app. Just have to work out how to deal with multiple people using the same destination, think The Fly.

    Alternately people can sign up for my Nutcracker Empire. Unlike Telecrag's preposterous proposal, this will use proven technology at about 8% the cost of a chairlift.

    The roll out of nutcracker tows will begin with rebuilding the former Mt Tate, Mt Northcote and Lake Albina tows, followed by new lifts at Twin Valleys and some Mexican locations like Hellfire Gully on Mt Feathertop and Cairn Gully on the mountain they named after me.

    Thredbo is serious enough about the rumours I've been hearing to start telling Clubs their plan. I got these dot points in an email today which mentioned a 5 year plan.

    • Replacing the old bobsled with an all-weather longer version; installing a staged flying fox from top to bottom; opening new hiking and cycling trails including to Deadhorse Gap;
    • Replacing Merritts chair with an eight-seater gondola in 2020 and a new Merritts Restaurant in 2021;
    • Expanding snow making (e.g., on the Dream Run);
    • Providing mountain bike access to the Cruiser lift thus servicing new green/blue trails via the new Merritts Gondola;
    • Replacing Snowgums twin chair at the present location with a six-seater high-speed lift, extended in two stages higher than the current top station, to allow separation for bad weather operations;
    • Rebuilding Thredboland with an additional beginners’ ski area opened to complement Friday Flat.

    Yep and for those familiar with Thredbo, the gondola is going in. No really it is.

    Snowgums 6 seater. No dates, did ya notice that. It seems to have appeared from nowhere. I was aware of all the other bits but that ones new to me. Good. Great idea, I love Snowgums.

    I knew they'd do Snowgums eventually. It's pretty much their only wind hold lift other than FF (merritts doesn't really count bc you can't ski anything off it) and the interschools depend on Snowgums. I'm just surprised its a six pack, I honestly expected a quad. Futureproofing maybe? Looks like theyre really trying to shift the centre of the village back to VT.

    I wonder where the extension will go?

    I mean the first four just seem like common sense. More hiking and cycling is to be expected, and some shorter not so difficult bike runs around Cruiser would seem like a good idea. Snow making on Dream Run would be a dream!

    I always thought they had plans to extend Snowgums up into the wilderness above, out in that Valley where the Kosi walk goes or at least thats what I was told once upon a time. Maybe it will happen, and a six as well?!? Oh boy now we are dreaming.

    Where could they add an extra learning area? Golf Course?

    I always thought the golf course area could be great learners area, nice pitch and its vastly shaded most of the day so would hold the manmade a lot better due to less loss from sunlight. I doubt they will seperate the learning areas though.

    Yes and no, I think the Gondola will add a lot to merrits, making it easier to get kids in lessons back to Friday flat. Also takes pressure of death barrel.
