I heard something along the lines of one new major development for the next 5 years, starting with the gondola. Something along the lines of management recognising there had been underinvestment for too long, and some catch up was necessary.

This has been the consistent message since the gondola was announced. It’s clear they want to invest, it’s now how best to spend the money.

A ski area one step up from FF would be great for progressing beginners

I would imagine something similar to the Basin in terms of pitch, but below the treeline, with a chairlift and snowmaking.

So, Charlotte Pass or Smiggins or Selwyn?

I have to say I have zero interest in thredbo expanding beginner terrain or facilities :)

Chuck a Tbar in somewhere down at FF, let them learn how, somewhere they wont need a sled to get back from if they cant work it out.

Interested to see what the detailed plan for Snowgums is ie where will the top station be and how that flows on to future upgrade of Kosci and effect on mtn biking. Will they look to use new Snowgums too delay expense of immediate upgrade of Kosci and if so that would mean location of top station becomes important to mountain bike trails, which may need extending or realigning to new top station.

Hope the new Snowgums keeps one of the mid stations working on assumption of top station being near top of Karels. Like the idea of skiing variations of Tors/Basin into Cannonball/Bluff lines before scooting out to Bunny Walk mid station - no lower mtn bollocks when the bottom is getting crowded/sloppy/scraped out. Other option would be Vista/Tors off Karels onto village trail, scoot left to The Falls and back onto Village trail, maybe throw in a few trees below Village Trail down to Bunny Walk or same as above accept don't scoot around to The Falls but head straight over Merritt's Falls (is that the line above Snowgums that's intersected by Eagle Way) and down into Bushranger.

A handful of chairs to get you out of the valley with mid stations for when the bottom is shite and a string of t-bars across the top Central Spur style would suit me. Not much needs to change to achieve that.

Funitel along the line of new Merritts Gondola but keeps on going right up and over to Charlotte's via Stillwell. Link the villages, provide Thredbo with a bunch of cruisey/novice terrain at altitude, whack in some mtn bike trails from Stillwell top station into both villages and every man, woman, child and their dogs are set!

The Basin was the original beginners area.
It’s fine for beginners (in good weather) they just need to learn how to use a T-bar like most of us old farts did back in the day!

My 8 year old daughter has progressed mostly hassle free from Friday Flat through Merrits/Basin and Karels area. The only hassle is getting to Kosci which usually involves Crackenback traverse to Supertrail, she's ok with that but for her 6 year old brother and his group they've not attempted it yet, but they ability is progressing beyond the groomers at Merritt's. That's where the new Snowgums 6 pack with a mid station at Bunny Walk would be handy. Get up to the cruisier terrain around Basin/Karels without having to do the Supertrail when they are still learning.

Yeah, but having recently taken beginners from FF to Merrits It goes ok. They were 10 year old mad twins though, so there’s that.

Actually a relatively short and simple tbar on beginner terrain specifically designed with the intention of teaching t bar skills including pairing up would be fabulous. A low stress environment where half the people are falling off and the lifties are there to help you learn as well as just load and go. I reckon a few tbar nervous boarders I know would head there to try out a few different techniques without the concern of holding people up on the real tbars.

Ski school instructors use Easy Rider for pretty much this purpose and give the kids a look/go at some easy terrain park features while they are at.

    LOL
I’ll never forget riding that one with a 3wk old broken arm and it was slushed up and riding like a boardercross track. I had to ditch my nervous friend to concentrate on myself due to only having one hand, and she couldn’t donit on her own, ended up hiking up the lift line.
But yeah, a tbar the length of that one but on dedicated beginner terrain, not having to juggle with the park rats.

Snowgums upgrade would be good but as far as I know it hasn't shed any chairs yet. Getting to the bottom of the deathbarrel chair issues should come after the Merrits upgrade.

You are probably right. If the problem can be fixed to meet minimum safety requirements and loss of reputation/customers is minimal (which it will be when everyone other than Thredbo knockers forget about the incident) than there is no reason to do anything.

Which explains the state of some of the roads around the village these days. They're disgraceful. And none more so than the main drag in front of the Hotel carpark.

Maybe KT is trying to make Snowgums their new main lift. It does make sense bc the wind makes the kosi unreliable. At least with the snowgums, they can guarantee operation with much more certainty than the kosi. I'd be interested to see how they handle the current top station; I'm struggling to understand how they'd make it close enough to the ground for skiers to get off safely but high enough for chairs to continue up the mountain to the new top station, plus there will need to be changes to black sallees as its attached to the current top station

The most exposed part of Kossie is the last 50 or so metres. An extended Snowgums will have the same problems.

But if it’s staged and able to run independently on windy days you just go to current top station.

I think Snowgums top station is a better deal for the start of the big groomers anyway. Get rid of Eagle Way as an access, let the less experienced skiers breath a little easier to access the Supertrail and save all of Merritt's Falls for skiing wind blown off piste :)

Chairs don't need to be close to the ground for skiers to get off. They had a practice run a few days back; dropping the chairs from ten metres (or so) seems to work. It may not be optimal, but it works.

I cant imagine anywhere else for the top to be, no point at top of Sponars.I reckon it would be unnecessary DA work and expense. So I reckon if it gets replaced, it will be just that.

Given the sheltered aspect they could have a crack at snowgums reclaiming the title of 'fastest lift in Australia'.

Thredbo do have some slightly higher terrain than the top of Mt Perisher in their lease area, they could take top spot if they really wanted to, but would merely be for bragging rights rather than a meaningful difference.

The meaningful difference has always been an extra few hundred metres.
