Would a T Bar from the base of Basin up to the Tors be sacrilege ?

The first lift at Thredbo was on the Kosci alignment, it was a Kiwi style nutcracker rope tow. How about bringing that one back! We could take the longest rope tow crown from Roundhill!

A surface lift up Merritts dumping people above the traverse makes sense. That would actually provide another path (cheaply) from the valley floor to the base of Antons on wind hold days, and it would halve the queue for Slowgums on those days. Gondola to Merritts / T-Bar to traverse / traverse to Antons. It would take up a bit of space at Five Ways though. On the other hand Squatters Run is one of my fave runs in the Merritts area. That's alright, I'll just treat the T-Bar passengers as a slalom course and cop the odd verbal spray as I go by.

Here's a link to that old trail map, there were actually 2 t's in that area. They aren't quite where we need them now but close enough.

There also a proposed boundary map for Twin Valley's on the wikiski page.

They were actually just very slow (wire) rope tows with plastic grab handles spliced into the rope. Their purpose was to injure the shoulders of beginners.

I assume you mean the Harusch brand handle tows?
Yeah, they were pretty horrible. Back in the 1970s it looks like almost every Australian resort had one or two, but Thredbo had more than that. Fortunately they appear to have been exterminated from Australia (as far as I know).

I've always wondered why that was not the alignment chosen for Karels in the first place, bottom around Ramshead top station. There is a badly windswept bit halfway up but that can be dealth with using snow fences and snow harvesting.

Probably goes back to a lack of equipment and resources to farm and move snow when it was designed. Bthe existing t bars follow the natural continuous snow accumulation.

Yeh fair point. Certainly would not be a priority now anyway even if it was doable.

T-bar into Stanley's anyone, or even a short nutcracker to make the exit to Cruiser easier............ :out:

A short tow out would be nice but I don't think they'll be encouraging anyone into Stanleys. They'd have to patrol it for starters.

Can't say it was a genuinely serious suggestion! It's there anyway if people want to ride it and have the know how (keeping out those without the know how is probable the hardest bit).

Have not skied it myself, I've never been with someone who knows the best ins and outs and not willing to do it alone.

Yeah, I presumed that was the case. Still, my mind went "that would be great" just before I worked out it's not likely to happen.

Not doing it alone is a smart choice.

I've heard they're replacing Kosci with a rope tow. I'm investing in nutcracker belts now, just to be ahead of the curve.

Stanleys would be a nightmare to manage and patrol, I think to make it work as an in-bounds run you'd need to engineer the gully a bit, Hotham-style. Fully cover a section with a culvert...and maybe add a circus net.

For low-hanging fruit for terrain expansion, the better choice would be east...Bogong Creek bowl.

According to Alpine SEPP maps of resort lease areas the portion west of the creek is inside the lease.

So down in Thredbo for a couple of days unskiing (post hip replacement, trying to alleviate deprivation). Doing the usual unskiing things: walking around trying to look important, hoping to hear some gossip, checking out the various changes (eg, Ullr bar). Walked over to the old tennis courts and contemplated how much of that area will be used for the new gondola. Not much going by the plan other than for 18 car parks. Seems like an odd use of precious space but maybe consistent with speculation on this thread that the ultimate aim is to build hotel accommodation there. Maybe it is the new exclusive telemarkers car park that some on here are demanding.

No. I can confirm the site of the new telemarkers car park. See image below.

New DA up. KT wants to build a temporary marquee to act as a bar/restaurant at the merritts area to cater for increased demand. Appears to be for the 2020 season only as the new restaurant will be built for 2021.

Interestingly, it's designed to operate year round. Presumably they'll hold functions in the summer.

    That doesn't sound great.
Incorrectly assumed the gondola and Merritt's outlet were both happening at the same time.
Actual sat in the gondola at Friday flats this afternoon, skinny seat but I'm sure more comfortable to be out of the weather.
Does anyone know how high the winds are before stopping them?
I was aiming to grab a doughnut too but the line was to the Friday flats retail outlet.

Presumably there will be no wind limit because the Merritts lift line is so sheltered from the wind. Pretty much the whole lift is below the trees.

I'd assume the actual cabins will have thicker/wider seats. The real design seems to be different from the FF prototype - the actual design has ski racks on the doors, clear windows and a grey paint job.

According to KT, it's not possible to build the new restaurant at the same time as the gondola. I like that they've actually decided to do something about the increased amount of people up at cruiser. I fully expected them to just let the Merritts mountain house get crowded next season instead of building some temporary structure to handle the crowds.

GET crowded? That place is insane on weekends and school holidays as it is. Make access easy with a Gondie and it’ll be near impossible to get to the counter let alone get a seat.

    I’m glad they’re doing something.

Tents and marquees have been used well in plenty of other ski resorts around the world to cater for people, staying up and viable for the entire season. They work incredibly well when you have an outdoor heater or five placed around.

I just hope it doesn’t become a cop out and delay construction of a permanent facility for longer.

Gondolas have a higher wind tolerance than a chair.

Point in case putting a 10 person gondola in at Whakapapa.

I imagine it’s simply a logistics issue - it’s just not feasible to have two major projects with difficult access in close proximity to each other happening at the same time.

I bet this Marquee ends up operating for at least 5 years. This tent looks similar to the tempory eagle lodge tent at Mammoth. which has now been there since the early 2000's I believe.

Obviously I have no clue but I'm inclined to believe that the actual merritts gondolas will have bigger seats than that.
This prototype model seems to have several differences to the actual merritts gondolas, such as this one missing the exterior ski racks, being a different colour, etc. Maybe seat width is one of those differences.
Also I don't recall ever riding a Doppelmayr 8 person gondola with seats that small. Maybe it's my imagination but I remember the seats being wider than that.

This is a Doppelmayr 8 person gondola from the Arthurs Seat Eagle gondola in Victoria which first operated in 2016 - 2017 summer. I suspect the Thredbo ones will be to the same design.
