Cheers. You found the new chair. That's the one I meant in the Lhotsky thread.

It often gets very windy up there. (top of the Kosci Exp chair & basin)
I wonder statistically, how many days each year the Kosci Exp lift is on wind hold & the only alternative is Snowgums. (unless, of course, you go over to the Merritts side & use the Gunbarrell lift)
I know the Kosci lift is not on wind hold that often but it is something to consider when proposing a new lift.
Will the new lift take advantage of new technology & be able to run in winds when the Kosci lift is shut down on wind hold?
    I wonder.
Anyway I love skiing that area over the back of the top of the Karels lift & so if the the new chair gets us all up there much quicker we will all be much better off for it

If they adopt the 3s cable technology, the lift/gondola can be operated at a much higher wind level.

I wonder when Thredbo will release this years trail map. Last years one is still on the website.

Would love to know the exact location of the new train park. Also where the tobogganing is going etc etc.

I thought the park was going to be off the super trail where the bag jump used to get set up.
Pretty much near the Kosi lift line - it has extra snow making which will be good because it gets quite bare there.

Also thought the snow play area was going to be on the village green...

    Haha Hipo!

Mamabear so did I! but on the bag jump thread Tele says the permanent moguls course is going there?

Are they putting snowmaking on the village green? I thought they were keeping the mountain biking flow rider thingy there during winter? Cause lets face it, it rarely snows in the village!

but if they just released a trail map they we would know all this!

    Too true.

I thought the same about lack of snow on village green.

Hmmmm... I thought one of the runs off Cruiser chair was bumps.

    Oh well....map it is! ;)

Thredbo needs a Crown Casino and an expanded golf course with a driving range.

And a summer waterslide from Eagles Nest to the village with 3 seperate runs.

Golf course to dead horse track should be opened for xc bikes/ walkers.

And a new locked-in alpine coaster - rather than normal bobsled which riders can crash out of the track - from Eagle Nest to Village would be epic!

Seems your lift plan is so pointless I don't even get it.what are you doing ( replacing snow gums ?? ( could be faster) and Kosi- a completely stupid lift, ( good call) but not actually improving anything. Wow.

Latest Richards Report has news that 2 new chairs are on the way, a new high speed Ramshead chair from tower 10 to Karels and another unnamed. Massive hint though with news of new ski runs and new exit from the golf course bowl.

    Bring it on I say!

Need to work on everything above 1650m. Get people up out of the valley floor and add artificial surface to return to the valley floor.

That would be seriously sensible but they would need a few things.
1 - a much bigger unload ares at the top
2 - better access from supertrail to the base station of the new lift.
3 - better runs leaving the top station. It would need to feed out to High Noon as well as Supertrail, and ideally they could make it run right through to Merritts, though that rmight mean cutting a trail through the Glades under the top of Gunbarrel. That would give access to Antons and Sponars as well. It's not a hard trail to build if it's made obvious and then it's a great point to fan out from. Another 50 or 60 trees have to go though. It would also improve access from Eagles Nest to more areas.
4 - more encouragement for people to take True Blue and Little Beauty. It's largely deserted out there and can handle lots more traffic. More snowmaking would help though...
5 - snowmaking on funnelweb. I think the pipes are there. It hasn't been decently skiable for much more than 3 weeks over the last decade. Groom a decent trail past the top of the old Ramshead chair to Upper FW, snowmake the bloody thing and it's another way down for high intermediate or better sliders. As it is, it's a pig 97% of the time and could be awesome for half the season.if it was developed.

That would be a massive improvement!

Frog reckons Tbar in GCB, which would make sense given the chair exit.

This tells you all you need to know.

    http://www.afr.com/p/business/property/thredbo_facelift_to_attract_more_OGIlxnrohUWUEeyXiJKpFP

$20 million ski lift was “just about” to be lodged with the NSW Department of Planning, Mr Diver said. It will run from the Village Terminal to “somewhere in the region” of Karels, Australia’s highest lifted point. “We’re looking at various options, obviously it would go on a similar alignment to the existing Ramshead chair, but it would go higher,” he said.

The new chair will provide greater access to the resort’s Golf Course Bowl, a tree-lined valley favoured by skiers and snow boarders chasing deeper snow and steeper terrain.

interesting. from the DA for removing the four old pylons of the old lift... and my guess at what those four pylons position means for the alignment of the new lift. And where it might end. Yellow puts the top station in a wind tunnel, brown, less so.

This new chair to Karels I suspect will give Thredbo bragging rights to highest chairlifted point in Australia.
Current bragging rights to that claim is Perisher.

I really hope they put the top station of the new chair ABOVE the top of Karels. I reminded myself why I rarely ski the Basin when we ventured up there the other day - the runs off Basin aren't really _that_ interesting to ski, it's an uphill push to get from the top of Basin to the bottom of Karels, and pretty much every decent run off the top of Karels needs another uphill slog. Whoever designed that layout really didn't do a very good job of it.

We stayed up there for about 20 minutes and decided "stuff this for a game of soldiers, let's go over to Sponars instead".

There's not a lot of point having a high speed chair dropping loads of people much lower because they'd almost all have to either ride Basin or Karels to get their runs in, apart from the few who were heading for Cannonball, Kareela or Funnelweb. The queue for Basin is usually sizeable already without dumping a quad chair full of people onto it.

The logical (though more expensive) solution is to turn the chairs around at a midstation somewhere in the Basin on a windy day and take them right to the top when it's calmer.

I think they need to upgrade the basin t-bar also. The queues that build there now a bad enough. They should have a twin from the bottom of the basin to the top of Karels.

What about top station being level with, but south of the bottom load of Basin? just above old Ramshead offload? but to the skier's right? Just before Sascha's becomes Funnelweb?

Interesting idea. I like that it gives access to the more advanced terrain in GCB, FW, Cannonball and Kareela Cross. But there's no green runs leading down to the Basin, and it's still 2 T-bars to get to the top of Karels from the top of the chair.

Gotta have a lift out of central spur to basin area. Today was classic, great snow on sponars, snowing all day up high but raining and crap snow down low. I wanted to ski basin and karels but had to go to the base through punters, creeks, mud and ruts just to ride the Kosi to get up and over.

I think Thredbo will manage the intermediates return to Village. Much the way Basin-ees get home via Supertrail. Or take Conrod over to High Noon or Merritts. :)
