Honest question, I know nothing about fishing, are you serious? I forgot, of course there's a trout farm near the ski tube.

Yeah. The tout farm doesn't contribute to the spawn run, it collects fish via fish traps to strip them for breeding. So fishing u/s of the farm while they have the traps down isn't that crash hot, there's only resident fish. The Thredbo is a classified trophy fishery so has reduced take numbers, a different size slot, etc. lovely fishing river all around though. Plenty of joe blakes!

It would be cool to have more services at Village Terminal. The BBQ on Supertrail is still serving the same tired offerings from the 90s and ditto with the Avalanche Cafe just below. It's a bit of a tired, old monopoly, if you ask me.

It would be way more au courant having an après spot and somewhere you can get some decent food. Fingers crossed.

I agree with some of this but what you may not realise is that people are happy with the status quo

    Avalaunch is awesome

Valley terminal does its job IMO

Only thing I'd change is the stairs, they need better disabled access, the wheelies need to navigate icd and mud to snowgums and that ain't cool

It's an awesome building, for the 1956 showcase of a ski resort.

@benchives yeah... I get that. Things can't stay the same forever though. I hope to see some injection of creativity there soon.

Avalanche was awesome in the 90s... when they used to play that Moby album on repeat. Now, not so much. I used to work there, I have no major problem with the place other than it's a bit outdated.

@climberman I actually have no problem with the age of the place and I'm a big mid-century architecture buff. I hope they do a sensitive renovation of the structure. Couldn't bear for it to be replaced with the masterton homes aesthetic they went for in Woodridge stage 3.

Yeah, I know what you mean but....I think it probably performs pretty poorly for KT in terms of a useful building.

Heard on the rumour mill there are plans for a ski bridge into the base of Thredbo Alpine Hotel wwhere there'd be a more attractive base for the resort and less of a walk to get on snow.

Thredbo has tentative plans to build a new upmarket hotel in Thredbo. I also thought they planned to replace or at least comprehensively renovate the Thredbo Alpine Hotel. The upmarket move might be associated with that, or not, I don't know.

My personal view remains that the plan circa 2003 of a lift into Karels/GCB area with a base near the old Tower 10 of Ramshead is the best plan to optimise the skiing experience. The worst part about Thredbo from a skiing perspective is the last 100m of vertical. As the day progresses it typically gets heavy with a lot of weird bumps and a lot of erratic turners. So enable me to stay a bit higher (but drop lower than base of Merrits or base of Antons) and I get good vertical still, an extra lift spreads the crowd, and have better snow quality.

An extra base doesn't solve much. Two bases is enough. I need more higher.

    Ha!

I really think it serves it's purpose well. The only thing I can think of to change is mobility, it's hard to get around the place. I like that there is no real day shelter in valley terminal, it keeps folks like that to Friday flat. On a sunny day, elevensbies on the deck chair is awesome

Agreed, the place is archaic and things like access for disabled should be improved. There is a ramp next to the maintainance shed that patrollers use to get people from base of Kosi to Medical services. But in the village all those steps from The Keller past The Bistro up to The Schuss and the stairs above the Village Square do not invite anybody.

On the hill, we all know $100 million needs to be spent to bring services inline with what goes on overseas.

It will happen, to some extent. Eventually. And I used to care about it.

But to be selfish, as advanced skiers, currently it creates a better skiing experience for me, my family and friends, As every year Thredbo is losing a little percentage more of punters to Perisher and wherever else, eg overseas.

The place is never crowded like it used to be 10 years ago.
As we know lifts go nowhere, and a lot of terrain is under-utilised.
It's gone from Australia's Premier Alpine Resort to a hidden Mega Mecca.

Now well into 2016, anyone know of any progress and developments for Winters in the Bo? They are slowly improving the Summer experience but now for some $$ to be spent on some well talked about lift infrastructure etc

Funny place Thredders, it's quite compared to Vic but gee the place makes it hard to stay high or even traverse/navigate if you're new.

Surely Thredbo is big enough to use The Crackenback as two half runs (top OR bottom if the snow is good). I don't get all this forcing us to admire their full 600m vertical 99% of the time when it's the top 40 or maybe 60% that most of us want to ski (ie decent snow not ice or slush).

Most Aussie resorts don't have all the height that Thredders has but KT waste it by sending us down to the crap snow so often. And where does Snowgums go except within 50m of Eagles Nest? (Can't access Bain/Karels)

Let's hope this long-awaited GCB/Karels lift addresses this need. Might be worth heading north of the Murray more often??

...as for the $100m needed 'on the hill'. I assume that's building and hotels and access/ski bridges as well as lifts and snowmaking?

$100m would buy quite a few quads even this day and age!

...might even be more than the full book value of Hotham or Falls' lifts and much of the associated infrastructure?

Season not long enough. Thredbo survives on snowmaking. Lower half of mountain sketchy without.

New lifts would overload current hill. Much tree clearing, in a 'green' regulatory environment, needed to expand terrain.

    Sorry. :)

Actually, we could sneak in Top Station of this "Golf Course Bowl Ridge" run at about 1890m just inside the boundary. Referred to NSW Govt online mapping product. Vis:

I've done a couple of excursions out to that Golf Course Bowl ridge area - there's a glade below a small cornice on the ridge visible from town that's nice skiing, I call it the Fairway. Only really possible with BIG snow, approaching 2m at spencer's creek, and that was after the fires, probably not much fun these days with the regrowth.

First time I went out there was with the old man, must have been...2010 after the big dump? Unfortunately a couple of less cluey people followed us, didn't traverse hard enough to get out, and got stuck in bushes way below the normal GCB bottom boundary. We could see them floundering from the GCB exit run. Dad had a chat with some old patroller mates at the bottom, and mentioned they should probably send someone to go pull them out!

Dream Run. That's the most desperately needed expansion for their snowmaking.

And Funnelweb - that's a wasted run because it's nearly always got thin cover and it's often closed. Snowmaking would help enormously there too.

I'm thinking less about a run, more about some thinned-out trees. You could even attach snow guns to the snow gums.

Funnel Web has had snowmaking over 20yrs.

Try and make snow on it or get it groomed and people get angry.

I'd heard a story that it has pipes on it but on the two occasions I've gone down it I've never noticed. The first time I was having too much fun to look, the second the cover was so scratchy I was too busy avoiding rocks and vegetation.

When it's got decent cover then I agree it's best left as nature intended. But there are some seasons where it's hardly open, and when that happens I reckon it's better to have a patchy natural cover supplemented by some manmade than have the run left unskiable for weeks on end. The run out at the bottom just before it meets up with Little Beauty desperately needs it.

They should close and reveg funnel web.

They don't appreciate, operate or even think about it and never will.

This list of excuses to ignore it is massive.
