It was intended as a downhill course. It goes nowhere near current requirements so will never be used.

It was meant to be a Super-G course for the 87 World Cup at Thredbo. FIS decided it was too dangerous on the day and the race didn't run.

So they ended up using World Cup instead of funnel web, is that correct?

I'd love to see some proper pics of FW to get an idea of what it's like. I skied Vic growing up and then didn't ski for 15yrs so after my return in '14 I wasn't hitting any black runs yet, and by the time I was confident enough to hit it on '15 it was bare. Is it the most technical/steepest run on TBo or is it just the patchy cover that gives it the reputation?

Even then they where farming any snow they could, shaking it of the trees, still remember trying to match the speed of the guys racing, not a chance.
The snow cover at that time was minimal.

I just hate FW. I do love pitch, but the angles and curves on that run are just horrible and the subsequent vw bumps. It slopes to one side like bloody Lords!

You really need to be at a certain level to enjoy it

I wouldn't asvised even a stronger intermediate do it unless they are with a teacher as theyll end up doing
More harm than good to your overall skiing habits

If you can ski supertrail you can ski 95% of funnelweb just as easily, so you're half right there. There are two steep bits (three if you come in from the very top from Karels rather than from Basin) which aren't overly difficult in good snow. Unfortunately in bad or icy snow they're a serious challenge.

I've only been down twice and on one occasion I ended up doing a controlled slide on my stomach using my poles as brakes in order to get to both detached skis 50 metres down a serious icy slope. But I also jagged it the day after it was groomed on a good base, and it was just awesome.

I believe back in the days before grooming when skis were 2.4 metres long you would get a patch to sew on your jacket if you completed Funnelweb. No good for the waterproofing but something to be proud of.

Having an instructor makes the world of difference. I've only been through golf course bowl once (about 12 years ago), but without instruction I would've been in trouble. From memory it's not well signposted and if you don't know your way it could end up badly. The lesson doubles as a guided tour, right down to which lines to take, and that makes it hugely easier to ski.

On Funnelweb the instructors know the lines to take to make it a much easier run.

    FW is easier on tele's.
It's best to keep off it on alpine gear or boards.

Its actually quite fun to do when there is 30 cm or more fresh on top of moguls. Groomed is just cheating.

Haha, compare FW to ST, maybe if it were groomed. @AJS it is certainly the hardest marked and cleared run at Thredbo, used to be harder, but was dumbed down a bit with some clearing sometime around 10-20 years ago (?anyone?). People struggle in the steep moguls in the steep section down basically. Ive been thigh deep in there, I like it when its on!

High Noon was a mongrel back in those days too. About half as wide as it is now. And it emptied on to a dodgy halfway pickup on the download of the Merrits chair... :D

Yeh, but instead of riding the chair down, used to sidestep up from the creek and ski down now known as sundance to bottom. Used to do the same with the schuss.

I love FW. Its just a great sustained pitch with great options in the trees on either side when there's enough snow. When there isn't its still heaps of fun.

So many great pics and info cheers @VSG @Angus_McCrory @Snow Blowey @wangster @tele-whippet @benchives @Piste Again @telecrag @Kletterer @Telemark Phat  !! I haven't had a lesson in 17 odd yrs, so excited to get some this year- after reviewing the levels I would say I am closer to a level 7 than 6 but hoping to be a 7 proper after this season. Will definitely ask the instructor to take us there if they think I'm ready for it, pretty confident on the rest of the mt, so ready to give FW a try after seeing all of your pics! :woohoo:

Correct - for whatever reason the run cuts across the fall line at points, forcing you in odd directions, and making weird bloody off camber bumps.

start about 4:15 on this one. Go direct to 5:14 for "the Pinch" the steep dog leg.

For some reason when I embed the link with a time stamp [ https://you .. tu.be/UCjQi6EWJXM?... t=4m16s] it does not work @Richard :D

How difficult is FW compared to the Bluff and Cannonball?
