When the snow is good, I love it. When it ain't, it's a bitch, especially the dog leg - off-camber, VW-sized ice moguls aren't my cup of tea. And go from the top (Karels), not the Basin entry. The steep drop (Trapdoor?) at the very top is the best bit, for mine, when there's fresh on it.

Not much really, bumps tend to get big though, and the steep pitch is more sustained. You should certainly do it before thinking about GCB.

It's not the run that's stupid.

Yes it is. A run cut down the fall line correctly is perfection.

Then better the run stays as it is so he has something to blame.

Most of my major falls seem to happen at the bottom in front of the lift queue.

    LOL:thumbs:
Glad I'm not the only one.

Nothing like charging in hot to the basin tbar queue thinking you are freaking awesome, then suddenly discovering that lovely firm slush is elephant snot in the sunny spot where you pull up - sink the toe edge and elegantly face plant for all to see. Meanwhile you know everyone in the queue is pairing up as quick as they can to make sure they don't have to share a tbar with that stupid boarder.

It's no fun if there are no war stories to tell over a beverage! The funnier the better.

Man, they are trashing that run! Actually, I reckon Kamikaze is fine, as long as it's got some snow on it. At least it's sort of down the fall line. I seem to recall that Thredbo actually started calling FW a double black for a couple of years just to keep up with Perisher when they gave Kamikaze and Rock Garden double diamonds. It didn't last, for some reason - maybe that was before they opened the Golf Course.

Double blacks is so over the top for Oz. Do even a single black o/s and feel the difference. But....they need to call them black's here to stop any wise punter from attempting these runs. Insurance is bloody exe these days!

No footage of the one I saw, he dropped over a metre onto the cat track, totally flat. To be fair, the light was flat, I had just enough time to avoid the same fate. Thanks to him. I have even seen 'backpack' bite it hard with a double eject, and apparently no one else has ever seen him fall….

Of course I have never fallen!

From what I've found, trail gradings are relative to the ski area rather than between areas. And a double black isnt really a double black unless accompanied by one of these.

Encouraging your buddy to get on the lift with the "Experts Only" sign at the bottom....

I like expert signs, because they are self grading!

Had an awesome day once when Merritts was shut due to weather, a sign telling you all lifts shut, experts only, meant only about 4 or 5 of us reaped a pow harvest. People could see us now now again from the chair going down Dream Run, but unusually the crowd didnt grow. It was pretty horrible blind skiing until you got into dream Run though.

Dream Run is one of those places that when it is good, it is very good. Nice sustained pitch of a reasonable length and narrow enough to make fall line skiing mandatory, so it keep the zig-zaggers out.

Have twice had face shots on Funnell Web when entering the steep pitch. All first run after a dump after getting tricky to dodge patrol set up across the basin to prevent access.

Thredbo lodge a DA for a new development. An 18 hole disc golf course, 9 holes at Friday Flat for summer and another 9 holes on the existing golf course for winter. Friday Flat one seems to criss-cross the mountain bike trails a bit, adds an extra dimension to riding... dodge the discs being thrown by random punters!

    Disc golf, sigh.

They could be sponsoring the Snowy River whitewater race...get them to hold it on the Thredbo instead of the Snowy and you could have this at Friday Flat instead of at Island Bend.

Unsure whether to revive this old thread or start a new one. There was a bit of a discussion recently in the Thredbo trip reports thread about future development (or lack of, there of) in Thredbo.

There is a bit of a puff piece in the July edition of Snowy Mountains Magazine based on an interview with Alan Rydge, Board Chair of Event Hospitality & Entertainment Limited (formerly AHL), Thredbo's owner.

On owning Thredbo, the article says:
Rydge said he was not in the habit of selling a lot of things and the resort had been very kind to them.
“We are very pleased with the effort that’s gone in and the rewards we’ve had out of it over thirty years, and yeah why not keep it going, it’s on a good thing.”

"Been very kind to them" I suspect is Chairman speak for we are making a bucket load of money out of it.

    It goes on to say:
When asked about the future and any possible developments, Rydge responded, “We’ve got lots we’d like to do, we have been in touch with the National Parks and State Government for two and half, three years now with a specific objective in mind, and I think we are getting closer.”
“At this stage we are not going fully public with everything we want to do, because it is a negotiated process. But as soon as we have something concrete then we will be lodging plans and all will be revealed.”

Cynics might suggest that it is easy to blame bureaucratic inertia for a lack of development but on the other hand dealing with National Parks would be pretty tough going.

The reason I raise this is that there are at least two improvements Thredbo could make that probably doesn't need government approval. First, the soap dispenser in the men's toilet in the Bistro Bar (Local Pub, whatever) has been broken for the entire 30 years Alan Rydge has owned it (maybe a slight exaggeration but thereabouts). As of yesterday it is still broken. Secondly, the fire place in the Bistro Bar was probably the first fake fire place ever sold. At the moment it is producing about as much flame as a bunsen burner. Kind of makes the Winter wonderland experience underwhelming. These things could be replaced.

Anyone else with small suggestions (not new lifts or new runs) that would improve the Thredbo experience?

Should be fire pits everywhere at the pubs.

Bisty fire needs two beers to even half dry out.

Too many staff uniforms in there too.

Here's a suggestion: fix the gas leak over at the bottom of Bobuck Lane. It's been stinking like a massive gas leak for 18 months!
