It's definitely cultural cringe, when every stop on the DH World Cup circuit has a chairlift or gondola or tram, and then they get to Cairns and the uplift is "we got a bangin' Landy mate".

The world cup round in Scotland has a chairlift, and surely that's the only place in the world with crappier ski resorts than Australia.

Just spent the week in Thredbo with the family. Had a great time, the weather was coolish and the village was quite. Couple of things in regards to development.
Nothing started yet on the bridge crossing below Sponars but coloured pegs marked going up the hill, gives no real bearing on what they plan to do (pic)

All chairs were being removed from Merrits Chairlift for maintenance, was talking to some guys working on it and said it will the last bi-annual maintenance of the chairs before the lift is replaced. They quipped that it would be good to have something new in Thredbo as nothing is new.

Thats about all I can report

    That IS an insight.

I had heard Thredbo was looking to replace the Merrits double chair and hoped it wasn’t so. In terms of lift improvements in contemplation, that one would least improve the skiing experience. It seems that is the plan.

It’s like Thredbo is run by people who don’t give a toss about skiing. Maybe they should just sell to someone who does.

Both due to the same problem.
    Skier numbers.
If you’ve got a wide open piste and no one else to worry about it’s all a walk in the park. When it’s hard packed and icy and you have a trillion other not very in control newbies then it’s carnage on a pointy stick.

There is something nostalgic about taking that chair and wondering if it’ll keep working for the duration of the ride.

These ideas are a while off yet. Thredbo seem to have completed all of their recent DAs. There is a new one under assessment with a mountain bike trail on the cat track and two more trails, one on Lovers Leap and one below the old Ramshead line. source.

It stopped for about 10 minutes on the first day my friends spent together - it gave him the time he needed to nag a date out of her. Married a few years now!

The Merrits Double is always terrifying for me. Its the child meltdown escape route from Merrits. Usually done with screaming thrashing child next to me with two sets of gear in your arms. Then even more terrifying when you are contemplating whether pushing child from lift into the creek line below is your best option.

Perhaps the new chair will have padded and soundproof boxes for child evac.

    Lucky you!

I’ve never had it skiing but when they were little the eldest had a few full blown tanties. He’s definitely mildly on he spectrum and hadn’t yet learned to deal with frustration and disappointment (didn’t come naturally). Thankfully I could always just walk out, stick him in the car and drive him home to wait it out. Can’t imagine dealing with it on the Merritt’s chair!

TBH when younger I was very shy and self conscious so if one of my kids had ever thrown a tantrum I would most likely have abandoned them

One memorable one i can recall. Awesome morning skiing with blowette. We get half way down walkabout after skiing long pleasantly as we had been doing all morning. She stops. Takes her gloves off and throws them on the snow. I ask her to put gloves back on. She explodes like Fukishima number 2 and its on just like that. Picked her and her gear up and carted her off the hill down Merrits chair with other punters looking on as if i was abducting her.

Was a symptom of tiredness and amazing how quickly it came on. Still does. Can see the signs much better now. Know when to feed it and get it to bed.

Funny I was front and centre at two of the worst tantrums I have ever seen skiing this year and luckily neither was my child.

Both at the ski school drop of! We were a little concerned pre trip how our son would go as he has had a few quiet tears, nothing major dropping him off and our trip required him to like ski school. So there I am day one at big white watch a kid screaming that they weren’t going to ski school. Helmets Google’s and gloves were all thrown in parents faces (literally - and it would have hurt) before said child did the bolt only to be collared by dad. A very big performance.

Luckily my son took one look at ski school and told us to go away and leave him!

So good seeing someone else's kid lose it. Even better when mum or dad give them a belting. Makes me feel normal.

Had a good one on holidays last week also. Mrs and i turned and high fived each other when we saw it.

Yeah I have seen @Astro66 abomination! As my plus one said “it looks like someone spewed tartan”.

The jacket is actually a vest that Whistler kids use! It is something I think Thredbo could take on board. The vest appears nicely padded and would easily add a layer of water proofing to jackets. It also had extra padding / handle along the spine. I was pretty impressed

Wonder if the new Merrits will be a detachable or fixed grip? And if they'll keep the creek midstation? Could open up that side of the mountain if its a detachable with midstation, especially if tied in with snowmaking and widening of the post bridge section on dream run. I'd love for them to flatten the last section of schuss too, would make the exit a whole lot easier.

I'm guessing that they've worked out via their experience with the thredbo valley trail, that thrusting first time and beginner downhill mountain bikers straight up to the top of kossie isn't a good idea, and that they need a beginner area (ie cruiser) for people to get downhill mountain bike experience and confidence on before progressing to other steeper parts of the mountain.

I'm hoping they've got a re-do of the merritts restaurant area as well, where the deck is needs to be closed in. Thredbo on mountain eating areas are bursting at the seams atm. If they go down the path of opening up cruiser for summer mountain biking, could see the restaurant open for the summer holidays as well. If they do it right, could have some awesome views up and down the valley.

Having said all that, would much prefer for a new 6 seat detachable following the ramshead line with a midstation around where tower 10 used to be. Not having to ski to the bottom, particularly in spring would be unreal and it would eliminate the long lines that exist for most of the season at the moment. I go there to ski, not wait in line for the damn swings!

They have commissioned some drawings that were shown around town years ago and they have said they will commence if and when the lease is extended.

Have they scrapped the plans, who knows but it does appear they are in a holding pattern.

Changes to merrits were never in the original document released so it will be interesting to see, as it may give a clue to future plans. I’m think the location of the base may give some clues as to if the tennis court is going to be redeveloped.

I’d also think fixing merrits would be easier as it is replacing what is existing rather than building new.

They've still got ~40 years left on the current lease, how much longer do they want?

Do they think they'll not get offered another lease when this one runs out?

They want 50, it is a number that the gm quoted and has been discussed in this thread before. Why 50 who knows, is it a bank/funding requirement or based on their return on investment calculations or maybe just a smokescreen blaming the lease to justify lake of investment.

Parking will be worse, by design, because no one can be bothered fixing it.

How much pay do the bosses actually need before they start work on the basics like, if you can't park, you can't ski and you won't come back.

Obsessing over growth without infrastructure to support it is easy. A f'ing monkey could do it.

2019 - Fix the parking. Stop making excuses to delay it.
