On the THREDBO Inet site and in e mails received from Thredbo photos of Instructors with clients, students and young children raises with me a safety concern and a poor message to those of us who venture onto the slopes or pass our children over to Instructors Care.
Question: Why do THREDBO Instructors Not wear helmets, and why are photos on the Official Thredbo inet site and emails show Instructors without helmets.
In my humble opinion "Not a good look".
Nor a message that I want passed to my children when in their care.

They haven't caught up with the times yet. I thought I was old school and Ive been wearing a helmet for ten years.
Give them a couple of years.

Maybe we should make it mandatory for all skiers/boarders to wear helmets ,regardless of age.
I have worn one for years but I dont agree that we should be forced to wear one, with the exception of children in lessons.

How about on the bus to Friday flat? Is it compulsory to wear one there?

I dont wear a helmet , never really thought about wearing one to be honest. First head injury I have ever suffered on the snow was last year at Thredbo when a helmet head jumped out in front of me , no room or time to react so split the skin above my eye on the damn thing when I hit it. Wearing a helmet on that occasion wouldnt have helped me one bit.
Those that want to don a helm , go for it. Kids under a certain age , yep should be mandatory. Instructors maybe should wear one as well while in class just to set the example.

No, it's part of my persona.

A quick look at the other resorts all have helmets on snowsports classes.

A little irresponsible if they aren't going to set the example - 'do as I say, not do as I do'.

A mate (local) and I talked about this last week on the hill. Both of us remember as kids riding road bikes with no helmets. He had one save his life later when he got collected by a bus when he was doing 80kph, I have cracked a couple on the mtb. Argue all you like, I know too many from cycling and a handful from skiing who have benefited from wearing one. Sure it may not save you, but it might.

There is no law, would you like there to be one? Sending a message might save the beanie lovers. Enough parents start complaining, hello!

I don't think it should be mandatory. Its just that safety is such a huge part of the lesson plan for instructors. They should show they are serious about displaying safe practices. One of which would be to wear a helmet.

I realised at around Canberra last year that I had forgotten mine
Kept thinking from about half an hour after leaving home what have I forgotten, what have I forgotten???
Bought another in jindi when we stopped for petty.
Can imagine skiing these days without one
For head warming as much as safety I have to say.
It's just a mandatory piece of equipment for me these days, and I skied for a good 30 years atleast before I used one for the first time.

...waiting for the new school playground helmet rule, cause there is not grass in playgrounds anymore. Just overcrowded concrete everywhere. But, if you're lucky and live in Parramatta...you'll soon get to go to school in a multi-storey high-rise tower. Oh...such lucky children.

Why do people not question the mandatory motorcycle helmet laws? Of all the times wearing a helmet is unlikely to save to you, that is the one. There are many, yeah sure they also like to sell ice to your kids, who would prefer to ride free.

I don't mind that its a choice for skiing, but find it a bit weird that people are so anti, without then including all helmet wearing. Including condoms.

When you think about it its kinda weird. When there were less people in the world, you could engage in risky behaviour, no worries. now there are heaps more people everyone is worried about even the stupid ones dying. It doesn't make sense. If I sell 200K units, they are cheaper than if I sell 1. So the rules of economics would indicate that with the worlds population booming, life should not be worth so much!

I never wore one as a kid either
But as an adult I think it would have been a sensible idea
My parents didn't have seat belts in their cars when they learnt to drive, no one did

I am not anti helmets , just believe the choice should be mine and not some nannystate legislator or in the case of condoms some decrepid old man who hasnt ever had the need to wear one himself.

Helmets won't save you in the big crashes but make a huge difference in the minor ones. The only type of helmet we have not replaced due to a crash is a pushbike helmet. DH went through 3 motorbike helmets in about 3 months at one stage.

I remember when motorbike helmets were not compulsory. And I remember seeing someone smash their face wearing an open face helmet.

And yeah try explaining to mr 3 year old why he has to wear a helmet when you don't. Once you start wearing one it feels weird to ski without one.

My mogul skier is very glad to have been wearing his helmet when he got concussion. Was ill for a day but would have had a very serious injury without the helmet. It was immediately replaced.

Main thing for me is saving my head from all those skis people insist on carrying over their shoulders in crowded places. ;)

Strange, why get so outraged about what other people do, don't you have better things to do with your life OP?

My 8 yo son uses a helmet and knows he has to. I have no concern with him seeing others not in a helmet.

Children should be listening to their parents. You shouldn't expect other people to do the parenting for you.

If they want to ski/board they'll where a helmet because they are told to. Pretty simple.

Until they are paying for it themselves they don't dictate the terms of the activity.

I remember a mate having a battle of wills with his 2 year old, and he was losing. My attitude was, he is too young to reason with, just use superior force. But I refer to my question.

If someone is trying to reason with a 2yo, I'd say the 2yo is smarter.

Your question is reasonable. Possible it's due the level of risk taken.

Lots of reasons, he is younger, smaller & doesn't ski as good as me :p

Personally I think helmets are a good thing. The reason I don't ware one is partly because I haven't for over 30 years, but more importantly I have had trouble finding one that fits my big head (Comfortably).

I was at Rhythm in Cooma last week and for the first time tried the Giro Nine, it was actually comfortable, none of the other helmets they had fitted well.

But not sure I like that it has the open vents on it, plus I didn't like the price (Can buy it cheaper elsewhere).

Yep. And it doesn't take kids long to pick up on it.

Sure they should do as they're told, but if "do as I say, not as I do" is your model of discipline, you might get obedience by force, but you won't get it by respect. The moment you're out of site, so are your rules.
