If you need the rest of the world to comply with your world view to make it work then you're doing it wrong.

Parents setting the example for the standards they want their children to follow is great. Requiring that of the rest of the world is not.

My son is now a school teacher and doesn't wear a school uniform. I just asked him if he's ever been asked by a student why not, and the look on his face was enough.

    This is nuts! LOL

If Ski School makes it compulsory it will be WHS arse covering. That's all.

If you want an example set for your kids, be that example yourself.

But don't get too comfortable in your almighty power to mind control your offspring coz you - like me - might have one that heads out on his 18th birthday to get a tattoo, swaps his helmet for a touque and generally follows a path other than that which you mapped out for them.

Enjoy the gnashing of teeth

Interesting theory on parenting ;). How much it has changed since mine were young enough to try these things. Never thought of mind control (how could this be achieved ? would be interested to attempt it on grandchildren if feasable). Mapping out a path for them to follow , no cant say I tried that either. We went for the, now obviously obsolete , version where we sat down with them and talked with the young folk to see what they wanted to do compared to what we wanted them to do and then a compromise would be achieved between us all and then every effort was made by all to achieve these goals. Totally obsolete theory on parenting these days but it worked for us cavedwellers of a bygone era.;)

    LOL
    Me too.

I was just making the point that you can only engineer their experience to a point. Getting upset because a ski instructor isn't wearing a helmet therefore setting a bad example for your kid and making them question why they should...its just too engineered. All IMHO of course.

My mother thought she had full control (so some oldies did), and it caused a major rift as I got older. I swore I'd never go down that path.

    I disagree.

If thay want to promote good safety for kids, the best way for thredbo to do it is to ensure their instructors (with most kids looking up to) have to wear them.

It is very difficult for a parent to encourage a child one way, when the kid's admired instructor is doing something different.

what Thredbo is doing shouldn't replace the parents' responsibility, it just helps to promote it

I don't get what you mean.

I wear a helmet because I convinced myself by explaining to my daughter why she had to. She was a little bit, but not much, older than Ralph's twins (which is why I think he is in for an interesting few years - they are moving out of the "parents are just right, and that's that" zone). So do what I do. A message reinforced if instructors are also wearing helmets.

There is a big difference between an instructor and a parent saying that.

    yeah, my bad.

I was commenting about parents who don't wear helmets, but expect their kids to

agreed, but an instructor can't enforce helmet wearing, only set a good example.

its still the primary responsibility of the parent

Which is why the instructor not wearing a helmet isn't such a problem.

And if a kid in lessons is stupid enough to do a dummy spit, the instructor gives them permission to ski without a helmet as soon as the kid can demonstrate "appropriate" (unobtainable) skills. Problem solvered.

    It's actually quite simple.

Assume that parents want their child to wear a helmet:
    • Instructor also wears helmet - no point of contention
    • Instructor doesn't wear helmet - potential focus of contention.
    Hmmm.

but if I was telling my kid he must wear a helmet, and my kid then states that he doesnt have to, because the instructor doesnt, it makes it more difficult for me to push it. the skill requirement argument may be lost on the kid

No twins. Long and sad story.

I don't need instructors to reinforce anything. Nor do the thousands of parents that have their kids in Thredbo ski school it seems. Considering the kids won't be allowed into the ski school without a helmet until they are 12, the point appears to be moot anyway.

I do hope I have interesting years, boring years will be boring!

No helmet, no lesson. Thats the rules (for under 12).

Of course from a parental perspective if they wish for a child to wear one, no helmet, no ski....simples.

I apologise if I touched a sore point.
Of course it is not ski school's "problem", but why would you support ski school creating potential problems for you? Particularly if ski school's policy strongly supports, if not mandates, helmet wearing by children? Kids are highly developed hypocrisy hunters (one of the joys you have for your future).

    No issue, but thanks :)

The Thredbo ski school is not struggling. There are many many parents you could ask why they support a ski school creating "potential problems" for them?

    Because it is a monopoly?

I think that the European system of multiple ski schools in each resort would be an interesting development for Australia, although the market is probably not big enough. But I digress.

You do. Basically, you think it is a good idea because it eliminates a "potential problem" for parents.

I think it is a bad idea because it will not serve any useful purpose....ie. I don't think there is any problem now, and if there were a problem I don't think it is the responsibility of the ski school to help parents that lack the skills and/or resolve to enforce boundaries upon their children.

Gosh. The next few years will be really interesting.

It's like the von Moltke dictum "Battle plans rarely survive contact with the enemy". Or something like that.

Oh no. No digression there. At all. You seem to have plans and expectations for the future of your relations with your children. Those plans will not survive.

Paranoid parents that don't think their children will love them anymore because they assert discipline? Wow!
See those brats running around anywhere, you now know why they are brats!
Hand them everything on a platter, give way to their demands and give them what they want, when they want it = lifelong expectation of same!

On the contrary, you are very strong on parental discipline and influence being the sole influence on your children's lives, to an indeterminate age. You will be surprised.
