Doesn't look like they have tried from the cams. Perisher are way out in front at the momment.

we were in Perisher in May, before season opening 2 years ago and a combination of a good dump, plus snowmaking, we rented some boards and went for a play on Front Valley, I'm guessing the snow was almost a metre deep in some parts.

There was a sign there that said slopes not open, use at own risk.

At the same time, Thredbo was all roped off with warnings of rifle-armed snipers, with orders to shoot to kill if we even attempted to look too hard.

I think some lawyer at thredbo has decided that the longer they dont snowmake, the less public liability claims they will have to worry about

The mountain crew at thredbo have two decades of weather data that shows any snow made before the 25th will be lost.

Thredbo don't make publicity stunt snow.

New boss wanted them to, but they must have shown him the data.

    Apparently.

    considering..
-Thredbos automated system is barely five years old.
    -better weather stations, less rainbows.

It's got nothing to do with night conditions.

The snow doesn't last the day.

The snowmaking lake also needs to get down below 4c before there is any point trying.

Disclaimer: I've made over a million m3 with that system, so I'm probably wrong.

Wouldn't that vary according to location?altitude? whaling? weather at the time (not averages). I'm sure Merrits could cope.
Also shaded areas of High Noon etc..
What about the new Eagle way lances?

Thredbo are behind perisher in snowmaking vibe nowadays.
They used to be in front by a long way.

bottom of Merritts has now lost most of what fell last week, but if a consolidated snowmaking effort was made to compliment what fell, even if much of that was lost, surely it could have created a decent, earlier base for opening day?

And when they open and remove the sign you buy a lift ticket that says you ski at your own risk! [IMG]

LOL, I gotta say, they seem to nail it for the opening weekend most years.

I think it was two years ago that there was no natural snowfall, but just days of cold clear weather, and they made heaps of snow.

crackson, this is very concerning that you are involved in snowmaking, but confess to knowing nothing!

Wow how long can this inversion last 8.5 degrees @ thedbo top station now and averaging 4.5 degrees @ night...the majority of the time its been colder in Cooma......

Got the 19th,20th, and 21st booked and this dual anti-snowfall anti-snowmaking weather is making me nervous!

I know Inversion isn't as bad lower down but still, hope the guns can get firing at full capacity ASAP!

I didn't know about the pond needing to be below 4℃ (or I didn't retain that info).

I believe Eagle Way snowmaking was all talk. There's no way to actually run a water supply up to it, something to do with water pressure coupled with environment concerns and other reasons I was told.

ALL TALK - It's probably the same story for building more lifts up high since it was all announced in the same media release.

A mid mountain water pump booster station is required to get pressure above black sallees or the top of merritz.

As for the lake temp, it's only an issue early or late in the season.

I imagine so re: lake temp.
I've swam in it in summer, it's not that deep and wouldn't take long to cool. The deeper water wouldn't get much below 4℃ even at peak winter would it?

Haven't you seen any of the updates about EW snowmaking we have talked about and posted pics of it? Also, the guns were on on Saturday LWE.

Oh! I so off the pulse this year. Shame on me, shame.

Give me a few weeks and I'll be up to speed. the inner snowbum has been hibernating. And I spent all last year in Perisher.

Haha too funny, I do wonder if they had made snow, when they could, and then covered it with tarps during the rain event, you know I'm thinking like borrowing big tarps from the SCG [IMG] whether friday flat would be looking a bit better right now......

Lake Mountain kept most of its snow through the rain event. [IMG] Make it in a whale. Cover it with a tarp. When you need it, roll it out.

Looks like the condition has become favourable for snowmaking from last night on, at least for the upper mountain.

disappointing that Merritts area isnt open, from looking at the cams, but we've just been up the kosci chair and to be honest, unless the snow-making is a miracle, the natural stuff isnt anywhere deep enough (unless you are on rentals!)
