How many of you folks are going to be back for the 2010 season or are hoping to make it your first season in the glorious snow?

I'm hoping to make it my first full season but not sure if I will make it yet or not. Hopefully I can.

Hi Spaz, you been having a rough time? Snow will fix it. Hope to get up there for some more MTB before then, if not I will catch you when its white.

Hey tele, The cooling weather is already making things better.
I've been starting to get on the hill taking photo's on Saturdays. I hike from the top, down the DH track getting shots whenever anyone comes past.

I remember, you had a long beard at one point and then completely shaved it all off.

Yup that sounds like me. One of the gals i was living with kept asking me to shave it off coz she was curious as to what i looked like without it.
    I decided to oblige.

Jay21 and other past/current Thredbo employees.... My daughter applied for and missed out on a position in the early ballot....suspect that some of her choices were a little optimistic, but better to aim high I suspose.

My question is.....Is there a time early - mid season when there are significant turnovers of staff...should she recontact the company at some point or just keep an eye on the website for positions vacant

Hi jshep, I would recommend letting them know she is interested in anything that comes up, people leave, or hurt themselves, or get fired, all season.

first season working at the snow, got a job as a lifty so definitely looking forward to that! whats the job like for anyone who has done it before? would like to hear any stories about a season as a lifty... where would i most likely be on the mountain in my first year? whats the riding time like when you're working? etc.
also will it be difficult to get a seat in a car each day to get to the mountain? are the carpooling opportunities good? would like to know about this before I start for obvious reasons! [IMG]
    cheers!

jshep, it would be best if she can get down there, dress smartly and sell herself to prospective employees rather than sending in 'just another resume'. I got my first job (at Bernti's) face to face and never looked back.

tangent, the liftie network is strong, after a few days you'll be sorted for car lifts for the season. Just remember to A) offer a couple of bucks for a lift so people will get to know you and be happy to carry you each day and B) don't throw up in someone's car on the way home drunk and undo all your good work - the liftie network is strong and word will get out [IMG]

FWIW, TommyG has moved to Charolttes and will be at Thredbo for the 2010 season. A great instructor (and great person), especially is you are into AT or tele skiing.

Do you mean he has moved from Charlottes? I will certainly chase him up for a lesson, I like to get lessons from as many different instructors as possible, I find they are all different, and have something unique to offer. Just like normal people really when I think about it [IMG]

Ooh, and I hear he likes teaching switch too.

Yep, Charlottes management have let many of their very good staff go (won't pay the tarrif). Thredbo's gain. For the first time in 4 years I'll be skiing Thredbo again.

Tom is an awsome skier and a top bloke. One of the best lessons I ever had was a few years ago; Tom and I headed off for an afternoon of AT skiing (I was new to the gear at the time). Four hours later, skinning, kick turns, avy beacon practice were dialed in and knee deep powder turn on the back of an untracked Stillwell/Foxhole were had.

Thredbo just need to find a road for him to jump on his tele gear.

Will be at the Reception of Squatters Run and Alpenhorn.

Very excited to be spending my first full season at the snow. I've been wanting to do this since I was 16 - many many years ago.

    Come say hello.

    Good on ya Kath.

Being a driver and always picking up people of the roundabout when ever i see them, it is very much appreciated if a couple of dollars put in for petrol. [IMG]

Yeah i dare say i will be behind the bar at fridays. Although i prob will get shifted all around fridays.

    It's Noddy [IMG] [IMG] [IMG]

Those of you who have skiied Thredbo a long time will no doubt know Noddy. Young staff looking to ski instruct should give Charlotte's some serious consideration after this move, you couldn't wish for a better boss!

I'm hoping I have plenty of time for the pub and the snow!

Also hoping I get a chance to spend some time with the ski patrol to get some basic first aid too.

No, not ski school. Has done in the past. Also run Bistro and Kellar for decades, a long time ago. He even used to be a bit of a hotdogger back in the day! Now he's just 'macca'. And he's awesome [IMG]

Hi jshep. A lot of staff will turnover for various reasons. Either they don't like the job they've got, a better one comes up or their boss gives them the boot. THis usually happens after a few weeks/a month. After that, the staff tend to stay where they are for most of the season (although there are always a few exceptions).

Generally all the 'good' resort jobs (night jobs which allow maximum ski-time) are in highest demand and daytime jobs which eat into fun time are not so coveted. Lifties get the best of both worlds - on the snow all day and plenty of night time socialising!

I agree with another poster - if your daughter doesnt already have a job she should get down there and go door to door - first impressions and enthusiasm are always best!
