Anyone know when the main t-bars are likely to make their debut for the season? Guessing maybe the school holidays (conditions permitting.)

They might need a little more snow. It's fairly rocky terrain up top - especially in the Basin.

PD is right. Check http://www.ciau.com.au/snow/rrr.asp to see just how rocky it is. Basin and Antons might be ready to go this weekend depending on tonight's snowfall.

Sponars and Karels probably need another 30-50cm of snowfall.

sponars and antons (and most of thredbo for that matter) rely heavily on westerly drift. Most systems so far this year have come from the south.

    Re: Thredbo t-bars

Taken yesterday (20th). They were grooming up there and trying to get the t-bar track in. Supposedly another 10cm overnight, depending on how much they get up there today/tonight, this could be a possibility for the weekend.

They will hold off opening sponars and karels because of staffing.

    Re: Thredbo t-bars

The real reason they will hold off Sponars is because there is an awful lot of creek to fill, 50cm will not do it and as far as I've heard, there have not been big winds to blow much in yet.

As for staffing, yes, if there is enough snow they will open for school hols, it's not often they'll open the entire mountain before then.

    Re: Thredbo t-bars

Well most of the staff don't get down till next week, so even if they had the snow, it still would not open till other areas have enough staff.

    Re: Thredbo t-bars

LOL! The enthusiasm from staff at this time of the season is always WAY higher than the employer's keeness to start paying full wages across the board before the season fully kicks in.

1991 was my first season and was a LONG time ago, but I still CLEARLY remember ringing my employer saying 'can I come up this week'? at least 3 times.... I was so keen I quit my job in May ready to go for June long weekend, and didn't start until July school hols. Oh the naivete of it all.... I was pathetic [IMG]

    Re: Thredbo t-bars

I haven't been up there but a friend of mine said Antons was ok but nothing great over the weekend. The cover is still pretty thin and the grooming a little rough because of that

    Re: Thredbo t-bars

The creek is good enough to ride in. I cut across from Antons yesterday towards sponars and it was nice. I dropped across the creek and had no problems.

I must have ridden Antons for a few hours over the weekend and now I'm paying for it with big bruises on my inner thighs. Surely they can put some padding in for us boarders. It's all about protecting my crown jewels!!!

T-bars really are not designed for boarders are they?

Time for a newly designed drag lift maybe?

I think you're talking about a different creek. THE creek is not between Sponars and Antons.

Is there a water causeway or something during the summer between antons and sponars? It's just because the land there goes into a v formation.

Antons was good for a nice change - but not really enough cover to make it very interesting for very long... better than nothing though.

Maybe Sastrugi is talking about the large creek running between Sponars and Bushranger, heading down towards the catwalk??

    Re: Thredbo t-bars

Yeah I was, Sponars Falls. And yes, Snomoo, there is a smaller creek where you're talking about but there is a BIG creek over low down skiiers right under Sponars Rock. Can be quite dangerous if not filled in or fenced off properly.

Having said that, have even seen a patroller go into it while fixing the saftey fence [IMG]
