Mt wife and myself are flying into Canberra this weekend (from Brisbane) for a few days away for our wedding anniversary. We’ve got accomodation booked in Thredbo and had visions of doing some walks and hopefully trekking up to Kosciuszko.
    What’s the opposite of skunked?
Aside from spending time in the hotel room are there any suggestions on activities? I have no objection walking in snow but I fear it will be raining at village level and the top of the mountain may have visibility issues.
Are there any hikes that would be possible to navigate if there is some snow on the ground? We could always start in Perisher or Charlottes Pass if needed?
Any other fun active things to do? Being stuck indoors drives me crazy.

Are you really asking for suggested activities to do on your wedding anniversary?

Sorry now the serious answer, looks like you might get a break in the weather on Saturday.

Are you after totally dry activities? How well do you know Thredbo, I don’t want to rattle off stuff you already know about. When do you arrive / leave?

If the predicted low temps hit I’d stay off the main range all together as visability will be the least of the issues. Just not the place to be when temps hit zero with moisture about.

The Thredbo Valley track is decent and you would be in the trees for most of the way which would offer some protection.

As I said - aside from spending time in the hotel room.

If it’s not raining the Thredbo Valley track sounds good.
We’re only there for one night - so arrive Saturday and leave Sunday.

Depending on how low any weather is, there are some good walks off the Perisher Rd. One of my favourites is the Waterfall Walk opposite Sawpit. If Perisher is clear the Porcupine Rocks walk from Perisher has great views of the Thredbo Valley.

Oh look. There are already some ideas in Wikiski.

Id give the Perisher side a miss just because of time but the waterfall walk is good. Assuming you leave Canberra early Saturday I’d hit either the schnapps distillery or crackenback for lunch.

Either hire bikes or walk the TVT after lunch.

For Sunday Depending on the weather there are some great walks in the village, some will go part or all of the way to the top. My favourite run starts just off the bridge and follows the river to the lake and back. I also love the hike up to eagles nest.

All these bar eaglesnest walk are below the tree line.

a frip up the kosci chairlift will cost you $25 each and is well worth it.

Dress (very) well and then go for a walk up to the bridge and back, with lunch or afternoon tea at Eagles Nest

I would defo go for a walk to at least the Kosi lookout, odds are it will be clear enough Sat later, or Sunday morning. You will need good footgear, or hire some snowshoes, some places you stay at(private owned)have them on offer.

I am afraid that both Kosciuszko and Eagles Nest are closed at present. You can ride Snowgums.

Starting to look like the best option will be to open a good bottle of red, find a fire place with an awesome view of the mountains and just watch it snow.

Will be the best TV you will get all year!

Except if you enjoy weather, dress well and go out and enjoy winter in all its glory.

(At least that’s what I’d be doing)

Presuming your'e hiring a car. You'll want to check out the chains and entry into NP terms and conditions.

    Yeah, NAAAH.

Love the weather and love being out in rain and snow but some days are best by a fire and I have a feeling Saturday is one of those days.

We spent a fortune in August to stay in Thredbo for our first anniversary, it was a rain event. So didn't even buy lift tix..

We enjoyed the hotel room... went to lunch at Wild Brumby. Dinner at The Denman. The Post office place is another suggestion...

But why not use this thread for inspiration.... https://www.ski.com.au/xf/threads/spring-things-at-da-bo.79776/

I also second dress appropriately and still getting out there! Maybe the lower village hikes might be better. Starting form Charlotte's might not be a good option is vis is low (i see no point if the vis is low, forget the uncomfortable-ness of the rain etc)

Haha, i've hiked through 30mm of rain, loved it, skied out of Guthega the day the snow boarders went missing not so much fun, skied off a cliff in a white out with a 15kg back pack, that sucked. One of my top five days skiing, skied into horse camp hut, lit the fire, sat for five hours drinking coffee and chatting with friends and then skied out on 10cm of fresh snow.

Some days it's just fun to be in the mountains when it's snowing, not doing anything crazy just watching it snow! There is something mesmerising about watching the snow float down.

One of my best days was 5 years ago.

The day after Super Soaking Saturday - i have named it on here before as all time.

It was still pouring rain on the Sunday and everyone had gone home. Turned to snow around 1pm and last tracks were amazing!

I don't want to be that person... But I agree!

There was no ski resort where we went in Sweden up above the arctic circle. but it was a winter wonderland and puking with snow. I loved it and said at the time that i can be just as happy with a winter snow holiday and not have to ski.

Honestly the trip above wasn't that bad! and it was Thredbo in Aug!

Roads site will answer your questions (use the text option rather than map, I find it easier.

Chains are needed from Thredbo onward and from just short of smiggins. So around the 1650 level, this will need to drop 300m before the village in Thredbo is effected.
