    Hi all,
A friend who organises a school group trip has been informed that the 8:30-10:30am lesson slot will now come at a considerable price hike. The reason was that they got was this lesson allows 2 hours extra skiing (which doesn't seem to make sense as lifts have defined opening hours and these lesson don't get any different access). Does anyone know about this price increase (apparently its the only lesson with the increase). With school groups this may price us out of Thredbo.

appears to be geared to take total advantage of the parents who want to hit first lifts. You know, the kind of patrons that have probably contributed in the top 1% of KT's revenue over the last 30 years. Not surprising, like the 80/20 rule in reverse.

I didn’t think there were any 8.30am group lsssons. I’ve never heard of them before. Is it a real thing?

by far the most popular lesson - allows you to learn in the morning and practice in the afternoon.

Perhaps the goal is to encourage the economical to get later lessons (and increase overall revenue at the same time)

Probably designed to balance the days work program by encouraging more people to the less popular afternoon lessons.

Instructors might get more consistent work.

Yep been doing them every year with school groups since 2003. Instructors take about 10-12 school kids per group. We usually have about 4instructors. Other school groups have them at the same time as well.

Not sure as I've only ever been with a school group. Never had lessons there myself.

The regular 2-hour public lessons are at 9.30, 11.30 and 2.

I’d imagine the 8:30 lesson would be a pain in the proverbial for those organising, finishing at 10:30 would throw out the sequence, so what they may be saying is the instructors loose the 2 hours of skiing as they can’t take the next lesson and then have to wait till the lesson after that.

As everything is still being set up for other ski school’s at 8:30 this would add to the PITA factor.

They could back up for the 11.30 lesson and even have time for a coffee before. When the instructors take the 9.30 classes they have to bolt back to Friday Flat in time for 11.30.

I don’t disagree but it does mean extra staff,

It also means that the staff who set everything up have to get there earlier so they are ready for 8:30 and not 9:30.

Personally I think a better system would be to allocate a couple of instructors to the schools and have the school group broken down into lessons that occur throughout the day starting with the beginners and moving through.

Absolutely, yes it means they need more staff because whoever is on the 8.30 classes can't do the 9.30 shift, which seem to be the most popular. Being ready for an 8.30 lesson means a very early start for the instructor unless they live in the village.

I think for the school groups it's easier for the school to have them all at the same time, that way they herd all the kids to the same place at the start of the day, they have their lesson and then fan out across the mountain. If the lesson times are staggered then half the kids are likely to forget/wag/get lost/lose track of time and miss the lesson.

I recall towards the end of a lesson, I’m half way up the mountain, well out of my comfort zone, and the instructor yells “ Ive got another lesson to be at. You can make your own way back? Yesofcourseyoucanbyeeeeeeeee

I think it is more to do with liability, the schools like to show they have put the kids through lessons before they let them loose on the slopes.

Talking with a mate the Thredbo Ski School was at capacity for school groups last season, prolly why they've raised the price on earlier lessons (spread the demand through the day).

How much do these school group lessons cost compared to an 8.30 1-hour private ($143 for 3 people, $7 for extra people)?

A lot less, but schools are bringing bus loads of students, not just 3 plus a couple.

With fluctuating demand ( short notice) it may be hard to get staff there on time coz there is stuff all on mountain accomodation for them.
