It was very windy up there today.

Some awesome windblown snow on the Bluff and in the trees under Snowgums. Mmmmm..

Bottom half of the mountain was awful. Ice, death cookies and then slush, which was actually a welcome relief after the death cookies.

... ah, time for my old standard...

White Room

It's 5:30am and minus 7, and friends gather in the pre-dawn darkness, pushing bags and ski gear into the car. Hands rubbing together, fog rising off each breath, a hushed anticipation builds for the day ahead.

Heading off down the Monaro, dry and brown yet mantled with a thick layer of frosty white, join the many who have set off from Sydney town, much earlier. Entering Cooma, just 50 mins later and the eastern sky over our left shoulder is starting to glow a faint pink. We crest the rise after Cooma and heart beats rise: the entire NSW main range is laid out like a white mantle, on the horizon. It's the first trip, and we haven't glimpsed the white magic for 9 months.

Onward, the traffic starts to build, we coast through Berriedale, and the talk turns to all the feats of strength and skill out of last season... the falls, the jumps, the agony and the thrill of high speed runs...

Jindabyne, edged by a mirrored lake, suddenly comes into view. We talk of the bakery at Nuggets, like its a foregone conclusion: coffee, croissants and melted cheese.. It's 7:00am, and the mercury has hit -10. Shuffling back into the car.. we talk about our plans for the hill...

Thredbo valley, large and deep looms into view. We pass the SkiTube turn off and think of the days we used to head up as punters to Perisher Blue, big smiles and juggling hire gear. So long ago...

Thredbo village, still half in shadow, and it's not 8:00am. We've been on the road barely two hours, and we are here!.. We assemble the gear, send the unlucky one up to the ticket booth and buy our day pass to snow riding pleasure. We stand still, for a moment, reflecting on the mountain above us. The hushed voices in the day car park are broken by the odd clank of dropped poles or boots.

We move up to the base of Gunbarrel, and the heartrate rises. We slap skis on the firm snow, thud-thud. We adjust glasses, gloves and step eagerly into our planks - clack, clack! The smiles widen, all around. We glide to the lift.....

Bump!.. the chair gently hits our legs and we settle in for the ride to the top... The chill of the morning bites into our lungs, tingles our cheeks.. the odd raven flys by... 'farrrk, farrrk'... it is oddly silent, this white paradise, broken by the regular thunk, thunk as we pass each tower...

We slide off at the top. Legs feel stiff and uncoordinated, this first time back on the hill, we slide down the cat track to join the Supertrail, dodging punters and boarders on the narrowest sections, catching glimpses of running creeks in deep gullies... The cold is enticing, the swish, swish of first turns on the groomed gets the blood running fast through our limbs .... soon we are at the base of Kosic express. We alight....

Anticipation builds, we adjust gloves, add some sunscreen... we go quiet. We smile. We see untracked all over... someone says the Golf course bowl would be good first up... we laugh...

clunk, clunk, swish.... we are at the top. 600 vertical metres of heaven are below. We round down underneath the tower, cut hard right, through the rocks towards the Bluff... heartbeats quicken. Seems to be at least 20cm of windblown snow from yesterday.... we are some of the first on the hill. ... The snow is so dry, we squeak our way across... the pace builds, we approach the precipice and point...

Silence... falling, falling .... *thud!* we land in deep windblown below the Bluff!.. steady, point the tips straight down..... the White Room has delivered! ...

We hoot and yell... as we head down the hill. That feeling returns, the one you get every time you are at one with the hill. The turns link effortlessly, the drowsy head that got up early this morning is suddenly charged with adrenalin... you love this sport! You love this hill!

The White Room surrounds you, beckons you to try again... you have no problem agreeing. Heaven on earth, you have found it once again.

what a nice thread to wake up to! must say, four days out from my own first trip of the season i was strangely not very excited, mostly it was the forecast of hard packed and sunny for a week. but this little change on the 17th has sweetened things somewhat, and this thread hastopped it off. im stoked now.
