I'm heading up to thredbo for the first time this weekend. The forecast for the next few days is winds from NNW. How do these winds usually treat Thredbo? Is there much protection?

looking at weatherzone the winds for this weekend are N/NW up to 41km/h on Sunday morning. While this would be windy, it's not gale force and it's the prevailing wind direction which the resort is used to.

I would expect the main lifts to be open, however Kosci express and the Cruiser might be slowed down, and depending on your tolerance for wind it could seem bad. Really though it's business as usual. Gunbarrel, Friday Flat, and Snowgums will be sheltered.

Agree with sbm's assessment. The last 30-60 seconds of the ride on the Kosci and Cruiser chairs will be uncomfortable and you'll get a free facial exfoliation on Sponars T-bar. The unload on Antons T-bar will also be a bit windy.

The plus side is that there will be spots on the mountain where every run will be a freshie. I could tell you where they are but I'd have to kill you [IMG]

Thanks guys. Not to worried about the wind in my face. More worried about lifts being on windhold.

Well it is windy, even in the village. If it doesn't calm down Kosi will struggle to run.

Rugbyskier, none of the places you regularly ski [IMG] - thanks for not letting the cat out of the bag.

Snow temp in village square -8.2

Spaz, I think you are right today might have numerous lifts of wind hold/visi hold, with 112km/hr blowing up top, Kosi is definitely going to struggle to run, but I guess only time will tell

    Lift/Trail status was just updated:
Karels, Basin, Kosi, Snowgums, Antons, Sponars, Cruiser all closed
Means only Gunbarrel will be open unless you are a beginner,

Yes, I'm going to say "I'll take the snowplough group today." Friday Flat is probably the place to be this morning.

You're right spaz. I tend to spend a lot of time on Walkabout, Squatters Run and Ballroom, as well as High Noon laps.

140km/h winds, early this a.m. Still well north of 100km/h, in gusts.

Free skiing this morning at Thredbo. MrH took miss and a guy from her school early this morning, leaving me to sleep in, with the dogs. She's upstairs in the cafe at FF doing some work while the kids (if yr12 are still kids) are going up and down FF for free and just called me. Its got very windy as they got to Lake Crackenback on the way in, about when the wind picked up here in Canberra. Snowing but blowing across horizontally and the cloud is not real heavy, i.e. visibility ok with sun almost shining through the lighter bits of cloud as it blows across. I'm out to walk the dogs and get some pics of the Brindabellas. She didn't know if Snowgums was going or not.

Still very windy conditions, upon arriving at the bottom of Gunbarrel at ~8:40am, the people there waiting for first lift were informed that Gunbarrel would be going on wind hold as well with winds of 110km/hr half way up the lift(Presumably where is crosses over Merritts), still very windy at Friday Flat, Merritts chair and Easy Rider are still open, but the ride up would be sketchy with the wind and chair, still lightly snowing in the village

Just received txt at 12:30 that Gunbarrel is still not open so after a bit more on FF they'll head home. What a weekend for skidown to pick.

    Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday [IMG]

If I could only do one, I would think:

Wednesday, chance of some weather, better chance for freshies, could be a good afternoon.

Thursday, better chance of nicer weather.

So far as the skiing goes, its just one day at a time IMO, it can be amazing one day, then shocking the next. Looks like warm day temps, cold nights, from Wednesday on, which can effect things.

    I would toss a coin.

Selwyn was great! busting to hit something again. Selwyn is queued for Friday and Probably Monday with 2 separate groups of friends learning to board.

So I'm leaning towards Wed so I have a days rest between runs (and the drive!)

A mate hit Selwyn last Friday and said the deep tracks he got to make all on his own was epic fun (and he's a thredbo regular!)

Winds were pretty strong, sign at the bottom of Kosi said that if the winds got any stronger then it would go on wind hold, but if you could manage the winds then you were greeted with no lift queues and wind blown snow, the Cruiser was absolutely empty, mainly because the chairs were swinging a bit, but still a impressive in the busiest week of the year
