Hey guys driving down from Sydney Thursday night. Was thinking about aiming to get to Thredbo 7am Friday morning.

Would this be early enough to grab lift tickets and make first lifts?
Also what time is the booth for national park passes usually manned.

    Chers Kouf

First lifts are a line up from about 8.15, start 8.30. Lift ticket office opens at 8. If you arrive at around 7-70 you could have brekky first.

You can put your skis in the chairlift line and go get breakky aand tickets

Np booth should be open at 645am I'd imagine

Pfft a red P-plater slipping the back end out, that would never happen;). But in all seriousness the light truck tyres + light rear end + lsd + black ice means you have to be fairly gentle.

Just take it easy in the shadows if it's a cold morning. 7.30 is early enough.

yeah , Alpine way gets alot of leeching of water from the banks... makes it worse for ice than Perisher before sunrise IMO.

I have only done it once, turned up, there were 3 skis in the front row, nobody had the balls to put theirs next to the 3 pro's skis, who were lounging about. I asked them, anyone else joining you? No. Righto then! Top blokes too.

Usually the first skis are the regular crowd, and I wouldn't bother anyway. 5-10th chair gets me fresh tracks no worries. And if I really want some, well lets just say the resorts are a poor cousin.

Best ever is still the le mans start with tw on manmade, fk that was funny, and an untracked HN with only us on it.

I used to *hate* people that left their skis in line at 7:45 and then wandered off to have breakfast. But then I started doing it, and decided it's great.

Only way you can have breaky with your skis off your feet is if you bring along your own camping stove.

If you go elsewhere, then it's open slather to move your skis to the back of the line.

I remember some joke skiing purity test in a mag once that had a question "A foot of fresh snow has fallen overnight and it's a bluebird morning. What do you do?"

    a) Oh, my holiday's not booked until next week.

    b) OMG FIRST TRACKS WOO LINING UP FOR FIRST LIFT AT 6AM GUNNA BE EPIC

    c) Eh I think I'll sleep in, the punters get a bit worked up and silly when it's like this, and the backcountry will be good for a week.

I like early, first run is often the best. You get about an hour tops before you have to reign in the speed, on the groomers. If its good I am off piste right away.

So you can get in line, put your skis down, head off for a hot breakfast, come back later and click in or do you actually have to stick around the chair like it should be?

At Squaw, you can only have a hot breakfast if you bring an MSR so that you can cook it in line. Can click out of skis but you have to mill around the chair.

Yeh you can bugger off and do stuff, don't need to be near the line.

It's probably against some policy and sure enough some D1ck will stuff it up and cause a fight and management will stop it but for now it's ok

There's some etiquette to the Kosi first chair. You can leave your skis there. But don't wonder off. Those who are on the first couple rows are always hanging around, normally under the umbrella having a chat for upto a hour before first chair is loaded

^he would know, those might be his skis you are thinking about picking up and moving back a few. But he is watching, someone is always watching.

There is an etiquette, and if you are there often enough (either side) you get to know everyone. Its when the Kosi guys start muscling in on the GB side, woah, watch out!

Cortina gets ridic in this case
think 100 pairs or skis , boards in a line
and the "cool cat" riders just drop theirs where ever anyways .
