Asking the brains trust if they have any tips n tricks for managing seat allocation and online checkin with Qantas when the flight is Emirates or other code share? +1 is getting a tad annoyed at the shitty seats we keep getting allocated and the radio silence from Qantas re: online checkin. (FYI about to take off so won’t respond for about four hours). Any clues appreciated
Will clarify that seat allocation was not available on booking and was noted as such in Qantas fine print during online purchase process - because ‘partner airline’.
I noticed last year when we had Qantas flights but on Emirates that requesting special meals only worked properly on the Emirates web site. Can’t recall the seat allocation side of things
I'm not entirely sure about Qantas/Emirates, but I'd be signing up for the Emirates FF. Then, log in to the Emirates site and input your Emirates FF, and put in the booking/reservation number. See if you can change the seats. Once you've done that, change the Emirates FF number back to your Qantas FF. I've done that once with Delta & KLM.
In the Dubai twilight zone. 4 hr layover before flight to Sydney. Enjoying getting fleeced by Hard Rock Cafe. $22 Au for a pint. Fortunately they take Euro so just burning end of cash.
I like the strategy. May well work next time. Should join Emirates ff anyway as used them way more than QF
Also, have a look at benefits for OTHER One World partners.... as I understand it, American Airlines accumulates points quicker, reaches status levels easier and the spend for upgrades and flights is less than Qantas, which has eroded in recent years. It's also a useful strategy to get the best FF for each major program: One World, Star Alliance and Skymiles See here: https://thepointsguy.com/2015/02/utilizing-airline-partnerships-for-maximum-benefit/ Thepointsguy is very good for finding out things like how to reach status credit goals, optimal seats, search for FF seats, etc. I like Delta for a number of reasons: - If you get Silver Status or above, you get unlimited upgrades. Usually one class above on international, and up to first class on domestic. You also get an extra bag on international: 2 x 23kg + 1 x 32kg !!! Delta also partners with Virgin Australia. - Rollover on status credits. If you get to silver (25,000 MQMs), but have earned 45,000, the following year, the difference carries over (45,000 - 25,000 = 20,000), so you get a head start on your next years tier. - FF miles never expire.
Codeshares are generally a pain for passengers. But always interact with the booking on the flying airlines website regardless of who you booked with. I.e if you book through Virgin a flight on SQ, do everything on SQ’s website. There is usually 2 PNR’s created. One from the booking airline and 1 for the operating airline. You should be able to get both and use the operating airlines one on their website.
Really! Never noticed multiple PNRs. Ie a RTW booking and different airline's @DidSurfNowSki can you confirm with your booking?
I'm flying to Munich on a QF codeshare with Emirates and I have both a QF and EK Booking reference. To do anything with seats have to use the Emirates number on the Emirates site.
The point was there was neither seat allocation available at time of booking (expressed in fine print during transaction) nor online checkin available. First time booked qantas flights which were actually Emirates code share. Basically the qantas system did not talk to Emirates other than sell us seats.
Ta. I’ll look back at the bookings to see if there is a Emirates PNR for future reference. +1 has all the docs.
Ta, I’ll look into it but I’m not that motivated. I have maybe three international return flights over two years, maybe... and with whomever is the best deal. I find the whole collecting points thing a wild goose chase. It really only works for folks who have a serious volume of business flights and the bill is picked up by the corporate.
If you can’t see it on your e-ticket (check the actual pdf, it often isn’t shown only in ‘manage booking’ or similar), you can call and ask for it.
I'll be doing my 3rd business trip for the year to Europe from Japan in November.... Plus, my 3rd trip to Australia, and 3rd trip to Texas before the end of the year!!!
Went to the manage flights section of the Emirates web site. Entered my surname and the QF booking number, this then gave me the EK booking details. I was able to select seats. There was a charge for the outbound flights (and varied by the "quality" of the seat) Regular seats for the return leg were free, but the rest were at a price.
Yes. We all know you work for a secret ASIO govt agency that meddles with the upside-down, handles inbound transit of ‘aliens’ and the movement of yellowcake on the grey market.
doesn’t that approach generally work for most ‘other’ airlines? I traveled with four carriers in my trip early this year and i don’t recall any problem with seat selection using the booking code and each airline’s app or website
Unsure about other airlines, but the only way to do the seat selection was by going to the Emirates site, eventhough I was travelling on a QF flight number.
What type of QF number? If it is 4 digit number (QF8nnn) then the flight is operated by the partner airline, so seat selection would need to be done via the operating airline. I flew on a Qantas/Emirates codeshare earlier this year operated by Emirates. eg. EK 441 = QF 8411, EK 049 = QF 8049 I did my seat reservation on the Emirates site.
From my original post in the thread I'm flying to Munich on a QF codeshare with Emirates and I have both a QF and EK Booking reference
Thanks all The consensus appears to be that the Partner/Codeshare PNR of the booking needs to be used on the partner site to mange seats/checkin. +1 did all the bookings (as +1’s do! - Isn’t that right @LMB) so have passed the knowledge on - but the response unsurprisingly was “that’s stupid and why don’t they fix it - or at least throw you to the partner site to select seats - blah” (which, imho, as a UX guy, is 110% valid). There is zero indication or clues on the QF booking documents that one can manage checkin/seat allocation on the Emirates site. For me it kinda sums up QF’s assumptions and laziness with the whole CX path.
But this is not unusual. I always go to the code-share site. But NEVER do a Qantas FF booking for Jetstar flights.... well, not from OS. Absolute pain. Never again.
Looking at my trip on QANTAS app tells me to contact Emirates to select seats. QF web site and tickets don't say anything.
Qantas app is the best way to do most stuff. I was queuing for over an hour for info on a cancelled flight and logged into the app and could see they had already re-booked me onto another flight. Wish I had known or they had told people that before queuing for an hour...
