I think one of the only practical day flight options that doesn't cost a lot is Malaysian. They have mid/late morning flights, arriving late afternoon in Kuala Lumpur, stop over, then mid morning flights to Brisbane, arriving evening.

looking at the 10th Feb for 7 nights, chalet shiga seems to be the popular suggestion, after western beds.

Gees I love overnight flights and will do them in preference to daytime flights every time. A daytime flight means you have to spend the night at Narita or near Haneda.
Would be checking what flies into Brisbane, Gold Coast, Cairns arriving in the evening and go from there.

Looks like its going to be a lot longer return flight or more cash to avoid the night flight. :crap:

prefer overnight flights, also, and usually don't like night flights that arrive around midnight.

I don't understand the problem with night flights? Going to have trouble travelling far without them or having multiple stopovers and extra flying hours to avoid them.

Another one for overnight preferral, esp having a 5 yo.

But hey, it's your yen. Air Asia would be another option maybe.

Try qantas,Brisbane direct. We used to do jetstar, tried qantas flight once and would not consider Jetstar. Also national Japan day is 11th feb. that long weekend will be very busy with locals!

Was going to suggest BNE - NRT direct on Qantas. Miles above Jetstar. Looks like night time over, but daytime coming back.

Qantas direct fro Brisbane Daytime over, nighttime back, it arrives and leaves about 30 minutes before the jetstar flights. From memory leaves Brisbane 10.30 am and Narita 7.30 pm.

Qantas is having a Narita sale at the moment end of jan including all of Feb! From $702 return, you need to play around with dates to get the cheap price. You can leave Sunday 10th for $402 one way.

$476 over and you are right $720 back, the cheap flight back for $520 is qantas via Singapore!

Cathay Pacific do a daytime flight back into Brisbane via Hong Kong, arrives back at 11.15pm.

Singapore Airlines also do daytime flights back via Singapore. One gets back here at 4.55pm and another gets back at 7.15pm. You'll need to have a stopover in Singapore to make it work.

I don't mind a night flight but always prepare appropriately; 1-2 glasses relaxing beverage, watch movie, then noise cancelling headphones/earplugs, eye mask, comfy pillow and valium/diazepam (and a low dose aspirin to reduce risk of DVT). Before you know it you'll be home!

I would add I prioritise direct flights at all costs (preferably with straight day or straight night tmes), far worse to be stopping over everywhere to save $$ or avoid night flights, much more tiring IMO.

And make sure you point her in samurai's direction for a more in depth discussion.

Have you considered flying premium economy? If you have to spend more to fly home via somewhere in Asia/extra nights' accom., it might be worth paying for PE seats and doing the O/N flight in more comfort. We did Syd/Narita in JAL PE and it was very nice. Cost about 50% more than economy.

But I understand not wanting to fly O/N with kids. Mine never sleep anywhere but in a bed, never have since they were babies.

Thanks .. last year flying J* I did all I could to have a more comfy trip, booked and paid extra for exit asile 6 months in advance, picked a flight that had available seats.. I had the exit seats going over although they changed our flight to via Cairns. (dont do that). On the return leg they gave me seats in the middle of the plane.. I had my booking docs and stood my ground, finally they gave me seats behind the kitchen but not my booked seats.. NOT HAPPY.. Not that they care, but will never fly J* again..

Lots of possible variations. We came up qf Sydney to Hong Kong on the qf127 (744) arriving 8pm Sydney time, overnight at the airport Marriott then SK964 to Stockholm mid morning.
You do need to entertain them the whole time instead of them sleeping, however this also means you aren't missing sleep.

We had friends that were on the same SAS flight two days later (older couple) and they were very happy with how it panned out out.

The jet was an older a340 as the planned a333 was down for maintenance and subbed out. Our friends said their jet was well appointed.

Our kids are old enough to entertain themselves, so its really about preserving our sleep. I love watching back-to-back movies, its the only opportunity I get.

What about Narita direct to Gold Coast Jetstar Business Class? $980. Might be worth paying for that bit of extra comfort and direct flight. We've flown JQ business and we think it's excellent value (on par with QF premium economy, but much cheaper!). No extra luggage charges and no extra fo oversize either, if you have your own skis.

Or cancel your flight completely, like they did for us with a 3 month old on the way back from Hawaii, and no flight for another 2 days.

Last month I booked return day flights from Melbourne JAL ticket QF over and JAL return. Discount seats were disappearing on a hourly basis and QF ticket for the same flights were twice the price.

August 2016. We only flew J* because we had points to fly star class and because it was Melbourne direct to Honolulu, and with a 3 month old the less stop overs the better. In the end we got screwed anyway and ended up being booked back through Hawaiian via Sydney, but at that stage were just happy to get home. Having said that Hawaiian weren't great, delay might have just been 1 day but they forgot to book my 3 month old son onto a ticket, the counter's response was 'well the rest of you are on the ticket and can fly'. Seriously.

In my experience all the Qantas sales discount the outbound leg, but the return is never discounted. On top of this finding a daytime return to BNE is not easy, but I would recommend the Jetstar business class out of GC. I did that a few times before they reinstated the direct flights in/out of BNE, and it is certainly comfortable and good value.

We are currently in KL to avoid an overnight flight home from Indo. Really recommend it. Pre-book all your ski gear when you book AirAsia flights as that is the cheapest way. We took the Priority Pack for all 3 legs and the 1st two have been good. Stored surfboards etc at the airport to keep it simple.
