I have a Thredbo season pass as well as an Epic Pass for this year. The Epic Pass is mainly for OS travel, I estimate I'll maybe do 8 days at Perisher if I'm lucky.

Since I already have a KNP pass there is really no need to get the ski tube but... from the few times I have driven to Perisher I can recall some days when parking is a hassle, or the drive up is an endless conga line of slow moving traffic. I'll also be travelling solo on Perisher days so it's not like I will get economies of scale by having a full car and saving on multiple people purchasing the ski tube.

Looking for some guidance from those who have regularly battled the crowds on the roads of a the weekend as to whether the drive is as bad as I remember?

I think there’s a lot to be said for starting your day at BC.

Leave Jindy before 7am and leave Perisher before 3.30pm and you’ll have no issues.

I caught the tube last year for the first time in I reckon easily ten years.

    I'm not rushing back.

I'm a driver all the way.

Its no way as bad as it used to be ex-jindy, thanks to the shiny new lanes. The Jam just extends up the hill. To the NPWS gates LOL

I rarely park at Perisher. I prefer to park elsewhere.

Just go early. Carpark by 7:30, coffee while you wait for first lift.

I hate the train and haven’t added it this year. I did when I lived there, to accomodate teens that didn’t like early starts, school skiing and races.

some things a lot of people forget about the ski tube:
    1. you still have to drive quite a distance - it's 20km from Jindabyne to Bullocks Flat. 30km from Jindabyne to Perisher.
    2. you still have to battle traffic. Quite few people drive to Thredbo & Bullocks Flat, true its not as much as to Perisher but the idiots are just as bad.
    3. if there is a snow fall chains may still be required from Jindabyne so 2wd cars will still be causing significant delays - as happened when I was using the ski tube in September 2017 and it took over 30 minutes to get to Bullocks Flat from the Alpine Way turnoff at Jindabyne instead of the usual less than 20 minutes

It's cheaper to add the ski tube for a single person.
You have to decide if the amount of driving still required, the necessity of being tied to the timetable and waiting at platforms for the trains offsets the slightly lower cost.

I always add it but 90%+ of the time I'll drive up.

I use the train if a front is forecast to hit during the day (three hour drive downhill, no thanks).

This is honestly one of the main reasons I am considering the ski tube, if a front hits it may be easier to drive to the ski tube than either Thredbo or Perisher.

If you have accom in Therdbo you would have easier access to Perisher depending on snow and wind conditions.

Going up early had its advantages, you avoid all that and get up near the front of the car park. We would leave the caravan park around 0730 and be up in the car park a 0800ish. The only time we had traffic issues was when there was adverse conditions and people needed chains but relatively lucky.

Going back down though, a number of times we had hectic traffic. One trip there was a bus on fire and the road closed, so I just turned around and went night skiing.

My opinion, if it is just you go tube, if you are lugging kids and equipment drive.

EDIT: Just noticed you will have accomodation at Thredbo, tube hands down.

And with kids, if all the links are working, lesson times are not a factor yada yada, consider parking at Smiggins. 20 metre walk to the snow. Closer if you are lucky.

    yep
I drove for a good few years but then the new pricing structure lowered the cost of the tube add-on
    so much easier
in the future it can only get more difficult to drive

So do I which is why I park at Smiggin Holes.
it's less crowded early on, and the lifts are the last to close so if we feel up to it we can ski/board right up to 5pm.
But it the weather is bad and the traffic looks like its gonna be crap we leave early - made easier by the fact the we can start earlier at Smiggins
There is the option of using the courtesy bus then tube or the Link T the Interceptor chair to get to Blue cow.

I only park at Smigs if the links are open.

I only catch that if I'm going straight through from Bullocks. Or want to get to Guthega before the main track is open.
