Checking the forums again as winter approaches, I read a couple of December comments on our Bogong High Plains trip from Trapyard Gap carpark last August. They reminded me a major reason for not staying at Cope Hut to wait out the forecast blizzard was the problem of the toilet building being full of snow to a height of about 1.6m. The door opens inwards, had been left ajar, and windblown snow had filled it up. (I remember the door being full length but maybe I'm wrong). Anyway, the door design meant the snow inside blocked us from opening the door and effectively stopped us from even attempting to dig the dunny clear. Potentially two nights in blizzard conditions with no dunny no longer appeals to us :)
Hopefully whoever is responsible for the toilet became aware of the problem, and has modified the door for this winter, but I'm thinking better late than never, it might be time to make some enquiries in case nothing has been done.
Was anyone else here aware of the problem? Does anyone know if its been fixed? Can anyone suggest an email address to send my enquiry too (better than just Parks Victoria)?
    Cheers, Phil

Shit in a big and carry it home if there's an issue with the toilet. Simples.

Parks Vic in Mt Beauty is the only place to contact regarding any issues or naturally your local member of parliament who will probably do nothing. Parks may or may not do anything. Take a shovel each this winter and it should take only a short time to clear. Not tho that at Pretty Valley the toilet blocks up with driven snow even when the door is closed
I did think that the door was a two part door there

In years gone by it was routine procedure to have to dig out the Cope Hut toilet and build a snow wall about it to slow down the refilling by spindrift.

A group of Wangaratta volunteers have recently worked on restoring Cope Hut , but there have been no plans to adjust the dunny door AFAIK. The hut itself is in very good nick.

Hi there. I just checked with the Victorian High Country Huts Assoc. They, and PV are aware of the issue. Apparently PV have plan to sort it but I have no details of timeline at the moment. One of the rangers apparently had to dig his way in last winter so it is on their radar.
The hut had major works done by VHCHA led crew over a number of weekends last year. New stumps, floor repairs, roof repairs, chimney repairs and new windows amongst other works.

With P.V. deciding to let the river track to Cairn Creek Hut return to nature and walkers abandoning what was once the fairly standard route from near Cleve Cole down Horse Ridge and Granny Spur (at one stage it had a faint foot pad, but it was never a track), it is possible that no one has visited Cairn Creek Hut this year.

It could have collapsed and no one would know.

Very possible- might visit before the snow comes...two years back heading up Quartz Ridge I recall the area being littered with fallen trees.

Last reported visit I can find on Bushwalk Australia is 2016 - some 2014 path clearing on Quartz Ridge side evident. MWB visited January 2017

It's strange that I used very similar wording when I wrote the post above a few minutes ago, the 2009 post that Chaeron linked to and when I wrote most of the Cairn Creek Hut entry in the KHA huts directory in the late 90s. I would have thought that my style of writing would have evolved in the past 20 years, but it appears I still write the same way I did when I was a youngster. :nerd_ubb:

I have a dedicated slide scanner (no longer manufactured) but keep running out of time.

    Must
    Quit
    Work

Except then I’d go wandering or skiing.

I walked the Quartz ridge both ways( down and then back up ) on the same week end in early 2018. It was cleared for a for fun run / trail running race from top to bottom. It is in good order still and gets quite a bit of foot traffic.

Kellys hut in usual state of crap. Wouldn't sleep in it but good water nearby. Toilet needs an upgrade. The door shuts on your forehead when you sit.
Mt. Wills hut - in good order but full of asbestos. Front door not sticking now but likely will over winter. Toilet the same as Kellys.
Cairn Creek hut - It has been a while since I have been there and it was not looking good then. Had a friend visit it recently and he is a Hut Maintenance Officer for the VHA. He will be looking to do some work on it but I feel it will be a low priority. A bit like Granny spur. I also know a couple of people who have done it recently and it is a mess. There would need to be a substantial amount of interest in this spur to arrange a track clearing program. PV will not consider it without significant support and even then the magnitude of maintaining this spur must be weighed against its relevance. People also have trouble finding this hut from Bogong Creek Saddle or finding their way to the saddle so that needs attention as well. It is a small SEC hut in a very pretty spot but is this spot significant enough to people to put the effort? Granny spur, if clear, will get you to Cleve Cole much quicker than Quartz and the summit.

No, but the track is sign posted when you pop out of the bottom of the Quartz Ridge track down at the junction heading towards Bogong Creek Saddle. It has one of those knee high white metal signs that are found nearly everywhere in the general area.

The reality is that Cairn Creek’s hut days are numbered - especially given the multiple other priorities and limited resources for Parksvic and the huts association. Same for Granny Spur - I don’t think there is any particular call for it to be cleared.

Cairn Creek was a well built hut. AN SEC choppered in jobbie maybe. So unless people have pulled tin off it, left the door open or windows open it should be tickerty boo. The only risk to it was the creek flooding it's platform and the stumps getting too wet for too long.

I approached it buy cutting the corner down off Granny Spur, compass bearing to end up slightly down stream of the hut, cross the creek then up stream till I found it. I cross the creek just down from the old gauging station pipe, the top of which was maybe 3 to 4 meters above the water with it's covering hut slid down it.

I exited via the normal path which was over grown on the hut side of the creek but well clear on the other side as it was clearly used by horse groups to get the creek for water and picnics.

All this was 20 years ago.

AFAIK none of the "SEC Cube" huts were ever helicoptered. In 1952 helis were under a decade old and the few heavy lift helis we had at the time were owned by the armed forces who would have been using them for other things like the Korean War. (However if anyone knows otherwise, please let me know.)

Instead, the transportable huts were moved to work sites on the back of trucks, or in more remote areas, they were shifted by pack horses in knocked down form. There were two basic designs, the wooden ones like Cope Saddle and Langford Gap and the more basic iron ones like Bogong Jacks. A third and larger SEC prefab design was the rectangular sort like Youngs and Kellys.

When the money for Kiewa hydro was dramatically cut off during the 1952 credit crisis, plans were massively shrunk and only projects that were over half built were finished. The SEC huts were sold off, mostly to mountain cattlemen, and the new owners shifted them to locations that suited them. I think the only survivors still on their original sites are Cope Saddle and Cairn Creek?

VHCHA also have approved (by PV) plans for extensive works at Kelly's Hut. Fires this year caused delays but it will happen after this winter.

Long overdue but there is a sign inside that refers to something like the Kellys hut preservation society. I don't think the Kelly's have done anything on it for a very long time. Some would hope it falls down but it is in a good spot, even though it is close to Fitzgeralds. The water source at Kellys is much more reliable but will dry out at times through summer.

Kelly's is on the sunny side of the hill, notably warmer in Winter, but also more exposed to the wind in Winter. So a hut and dunny each side of the ridge is a handy thing, juts choose wisely to suit the conditions.
