Hi K@os - commiserations, Dude. What a crappy way to end you and your GFs dream holiday.

I'm sure you've got more than enough perspective on this to realise that you were unlucky enough to be preyed upon by criminals, and that your own decisions could only be criticised in hindsight.

My family were wandering up and down back streets at night in Ueno only two weeks ago, and there were plenty of touts in evidence. How close did we come to being taken advantage of - who knows? But we all now can be that much more careful - in any situation we might find ourselves in.

I particularly liked being able to explain this to my son, who a few years from now will be making his own decisions regarding having a good time while looking out for his personal safety.

Thanks for the cautionary tale - hope you both get over this soon.

ps: Have you had any luck with the banks and the C/Cs?

    I can not agree more.
THIS (apart from my sadness for what K@os and GF went through) is the #1 message I have taken from this tale. Not having had the experiences the share with my boys, and never having heard of it before, this story has made a huge impact in our family.
It does not stop our love of Japan, our desire to go to Japan, our desire to go out in Japan - but it will make those I love so much safer just by awareness.
    Thank you K@os.

@GN -Yaks in Kutchan - that's a business that's going to grow with the amount of foreign currency being pumped into Niseko. Any impact in Hirafu yet.

I've been warning people about drink spiking....

Do you know if there Nigerian guys working there? So does it look like the drinks were spiked at the bar, or aferwards?
It's a little more scary as that place is in Shibuya, not Roppongi or Kabukicho (in Shinjuku).

We saw quote a few touts when wandering the streets of tokyo but none of them approached us. I stood and watched one bloke for a while and he definitely targeted young single blokes and female travellers.

Re: Tokyo warning: unsafe nightlife for travelers

Tout proliferation has increased after 2 year break from tokyo.
Roppongi is even worse and as sandy noted, it sounds that antisocial criminal behavior seems to be creeping into parts that were previously untouched by it.

We got stalked hard walking through Roppongi to our hotel in aoyama itchome.
They work sectors or blocks and have handovers at the barrier of their beat where one hands over an a new tout starts.

We where trailed once for 10 minutes when all we wanted was a nice izakaya to eat in.
The more blokes under 40ish, the more aggressive they seem to be.

Happened to a friend of mine in the past week as well, he woke up in a capsule hotel.. (I was still skiing).. cost him 5 thousand dollars and he can't remember it... No skin off his nose though.. He went out in HK last night and did nearly the same thing except it only cost him 2 thousand ... He got smashed then went out and was shouting all the bar girls...

A fool and his money eh??

Next time I'm in Tokyo I think I'll avoid clubs. If something awesome was on that I wanted to go to I'd only be buying pre-packaged drinks (bottles & cans) and would ceetainly not be leaving them unattended for a second.....its becoming an all too regular occurance. I also wouldnt take my credit cards with me and limited cash

Glad he's got enough to splash around [IMG]

That's one of the attractions of the Ueno/Okachimachi/Ameyoko area for me. I never seem to encounter touts. Only once many years ago when I was with my nephew and his mates - an older Japanese guy tried to get us into a snack bar for Y5,000 an hour but that was all legit.

Re: Tokyo warning: unsafe nightlife for travelers

Have just seen this thread and it has certainly opened my eyes a little. Was in Tokyo Feb 2011 and had an interesting night out in Roppongi. There was 6 of us, all 20, and some random Japanese guy outside a convenience store in Roppongi invited us back to his place. We went with him (clearly not the brightest move, but the guy seemed genuine and we were kinda buzzed at this point). He had a pretty small apartment with records stacked everywhere which he played for the 30min-1hour period we were there. Offerred us something (which I cant remember the name of) to smoke which some of us took and others didnt (again, not the brightest move). Anyway we left and I'm pretty sure we must've accepted an offer from one of these nigerians to go into some bar as I do recall going in an elevator with a black guy to some bar but I don't think we stayed for long and not even sure if we got a drink from this place (memory is sketchy because there was so many more notable things that happend on the night). Eventually one of our mates was wasted to the point where he was becomming a hassle. I decided to get a cab back with him to our apartment in Ginza during which he became sick (and I am very squeamish when it comes to others vomiting) but I eventually got him back to the room and I went back out to the street to get a cab back to Roppongi. Literally walked up and down the streets of Roppongi for about 1.5hrs trying to find my mates all the time being hassled by these nigerians but really they arent that bad (certainly no worse than a homeless person asking for money) and after a while I was kinda "toying" with them. Eventually bumped into my mates purely by coincidence after they had done some fairly regrettable things. A little later went back to our apartment, where I couldnt sleep in my own room due to mate (that I had taken home earlier) making it smell pretty horrible, so slept on the floor in the other apartment.

Anyway, while I was kind of stunned by how many nigerians there were in Roppongi (and probably a little wary of them too), I did not suspect much more than that they wanted you to go into "their" place so you would spend money in "their" place (like a club promoter or something). Had no idea that some of these places would have more sinister intentions than that - but I will certainly be more wary in the future.

We had 2 groups of guests this year that had basically the same thing happen to them, and one of the members got their card stolen and subsequently $6000 was charged to the card. They all had "stuff" put into their drinks unawares. Beware the Nigerians.

Home tomorrow..really looking forward to it..

Will only ever stop in HK to change planes .... Japan rules!!!!....

I think you(/your mate) are doing it wrong... I've had a shit load of massive nights out and about in hkg and it's pretty easy to avoid getting ripped off with plenty (unlike jpn) of legit night spots to wreck yourself at, and get into more conventional trouble! [IMG]

wow, how on earth did you find this thread??? 7 years...

Now that you dug it up, it would be interesting to know if the occurrences of drink spiking has settled down at all. I seem to recall it was a global thing for a while and people are a bit more aware these days.
