    Cheers that was awesome!

I reckon he'd be an amazing man to sit down by a fire with, with a glass of red and just listen to the stories.

I have a great uncle who lives on Vancouver Island (my grandfather's younger brother) and he's around 93 IIRC - still XC and downhill skis, horseback rides and walks in summer.

I love the OCD YART police on these forums. Clean forum, clean desk, obsessive mind.

Back to the topic: Tomasi's family are also responsible for the only speed skiing course constructed on the Australian mainland, in the Caruthers, Northcote and Mt Lee environs. About 300m vertical, consistent pitch, and massive speeds obtained one spring in the 1990s, I think. The Golden Eagle is the name of the award/speed competition. All equipment had to be hiked in due to strict environmental conditions imposed by the NPWS for the Kocsi NP.

Mr Tomasi Senior is certainly a pivotal figure in Australian skiing. Along with Tony Sponar, another postwar immigrant.

    Good on you Mr Tomasi!

For more on how Mr Tomasi and friends opened up the now backcountry north of Thredbo... for things including the speed races (Golden Eagle) and the like... enjoy this.

    quote:

In 1953 the Association developed a high-speed downhill test run beside the Northcote Tow, from the cornice on Mt Northcove .. expected to be the fastest course in Australia, comparable with the famous international courses including the Chamois Run in Kitzbuel and Kandahar Run in St Anton.33

To promote the run, awards were created: ‘Golden Eagles’ ...formally opened on 3 August 1953. ... Tony Sponar, Czechoslovakian Olympic place-getter, was fastest over the course in a time of 32.2 seconds at an average speed of 54.4 mph (87.5 kmh).35 Bill Kubes, Tommy Tomasi, and Charles Anton won Golden Eagles and Doug Thatcher a Bronze.36

It was claimed that Tony Sponar had exceeded 75 mph in the top part of the course. ..

Inspirational. Massive respect for the guys and girls of this generation that pioneered skiing. I am currently reading about Eileen Mitchells adventures.

The Golden Eagle got recreated, I know one of the guys that raced, the winner topped 165kph. So far as we know, the fastest anyone has gone on Australian snow.

The Tomasi Mafia, a term I hear often, but with affection.

Tommy's a champion. I've shared a few coffees with him at Eagles Nest and a few chair rides over the years.

I remember one such ride up Crackenback when I'd just started with DPS and I had my first pair of Wailers out for the day. Boy did I cop it, all the way up the lift and he just kept laughing at me.
