Hi all - we're trying to plan our first o/s (northern hemisphere) ski trip in Jan/Feb 2019, and trying to keep the costs to about $5K. We don't mind which resort we ski - he is comfortable on black runs, I'm transitioning to blue (although after this Aus ski season I'm hoping I'll be comfortable on blues!). We were thinking somewhere USA/Canada. Ideally 7-8 days (6 days skiing) but can compromise!

We will have an Epic season pass, so have been looking at those resorts, but finding with flights tends to push it into $6-$7K. Are there cheaper resorts even if they aren't Epic resorts? Am I too late to be able to get cheap flights to west coast USA/Canada?

If you are going all the way to US/Canada, you are going to want to ski more than 6 days.

8 days for a NA trip? Seriously? Way too short. If that is all the time you have I wouldn't be bothering. You lose too much time and cost wise just in the getting there, then add the time change. For NA 2 weeks would be absolute minimum, 3 weeks better.
If you really wanted to ski somewhere Jan/Feb and really only had one week to ski, the only reasonable option would be somewhere on Honshu, otherwise just stay home.

I definitely recommend Japan if you have less than two weeks. Cheaper, direct flights, no jet lag and ski in ski out at many resorts. If you have your heart set on North America then just do it...thoroughly enjoyed our time Canada..,

Or you could go to Copper Mountain via Fiji. Guaranteed cheap and no jet lag ;)

I got a cracking price for a January 2017 Canada flight, the last week of June 2016. Skyscanner missed it, I got an email from Webjet promoting Qantas and Virgin sales. The Air Canada return flight I wanted was $700 cheaper overnight.

No guarantee that the airlines would do the same this year though. If bookings are strong (which they weren't 2 years ago), there might not be a mid year sale this year. Best thing to do is set up alerts with Skyscanner et al, and watch the prices like a hawk.

@Birdlady this would be a joke about a joker who ran a dodgy online travel agency about skiing USA for less and Nth American deals which he promoted some years ago on this forum.

@Birdlady with the info you provided to use your Epic pass plus skiing ability and hopes plus minimize costs a good option is ski at Breckenridge but stay in a budget motel in Frisco or Dillon or Silverthorne and nearby diners and use the free municipal bus to get to Brekenridge. Frisco will minimise bus travel time. Take a shuttle there from Denver and look at flights to Denver, maybe even looking into SkiUSAforLess's favourite budget airline which utilsied Air Fiji via Fiji to LAX. But allow two weeks from home to back home please so as to have maybe 10 days on the slopes.

    It wont work for Jan,

But we went to the US (Tahoe) in March, airfares were $1136pp. and 6 nights accom right next to the Heavenly Gondola for $650 AUD.

Yes everyone thought we were nuts going for only a week... but it worked for us.

If thats all you can spare in annual leave - don't let the wossers above dissuade you.

after about mid Jan the flight costs drop heaps. Have you tried chatting to an agent about flights. I often use Travelplan, they are ski experts and may have an option for you. Tell them your budget and what you want and see what happens.

Thanks everyone. Really appreciate your replies. I think we'll need to rethink the amount of time and the budget! We're off to Scotland in May 2019 (not skiing), which is why we were trying to sneak in a quick trip with the leftover leave we had! Might have to wait until 2019/2020, and do an extra week at Perisher this year! Woo hoo! Thanks again all!

With your Epic pass have you considered Hakuba, Japan? You get 5 days free skiing and they have some excellent blue/black groomers for you to improve on. Add in barely any time difference (no jet lag) and usually cheaper airfares than USA/Canada and you win. For 9 days that would be my pick. Plus you get to experience some amazing culture!

If you are off to Scotland in May anyway, then I think you'd be better off stopping off in the Alps on the way in April and hit up a glacier resort for a few days. eg. Sölden, Hintertux.

Do not agree with this at all.

We experienced this, this year. I was watching flights to Tokyo and San Fran. we got our flights to San Fran for $1136. i continued to have flights alerts for both place right up til departure. The flights to Tokyo never dropped below $1136.

Granted that was with Jetstar who suck enormous balls.

But I also just booked Melb - Tokyo - Sapporo return for next Feb for $1,050.

Not sure where you're getting your flight info from? I'm sure there a cheap fares for both places, just depends on when you book.

You were watching the wrong places I guess ?.
I had friends that paid 740 on JAL around your dates. Booked ten days before departure. Others that flew ana .
    I've haven't seen a return to Tokyo dearer than $1100 ..
Dates I was looking at mid January had $655 return on JAL from Melbourne.
Intially that was on the JAL website. Then Expedia.

    Thats odd.
I'm using sky scanner, google and momondo and I know the pilot .
However I find signing up for emails also helps.
The JAL melbourne special was just a random email

Yeah there is no one website that has all the best flight specials, times and prices unfortunately. Takes a bit of time, research skills and of course luck.

Don't write off Japan as an expensive place to visit!

Feb, $550 return with J* was my cheapest so far. Have to wait for the sales and then jump on it straight away. Usually they have a 'free return' sale at some point

JAL flying Melbs to Tokyo return for $800 in Feb 2019.
Can add a connection to Sapporo and back and get it under $1,000.
