The Quick Unlock upgrade was initially created to allow new registrations immediate and full access to Gear Swap.

From today (3 Aug, 2022), the Quick Unlock upgrade has been extended to unlock anyone who's participation has been restricted due to 500+ post count.

It's just like having a Gold Ski Pass with all the benefits, but for 30 days only. It is not a subscription though, so it will not automatically renew.

It's the era of microtransactions.
That's just wrongheaded.

There's a substantial difference between software that is free to commence with and unlocking features is a subscription - and a luxury vehicle that you have to buy upfront for a big price, yet never truly own.

It will possibly work for vehicles sold new on all-expense-paid lease arrangements - but the 2nd hand market for post-2020 BM's is gunna take a massive hit. It's nothing short of cynical.

It hasn't been well received.

My car has a free period where the remote features work like tracking, remote start, lock/unlock etc but that expires after 3 years and requires a payment to re-activate, I kinda get that as they need to pay a 3rd party for a 4G connection etc. But software to enable something that should just be a switch and an element that is already built in to the car.........

Using the heated seats as an example. You have paid for the hardware the minute you walk out the door. The car is not being sold at a loss, it's not cheaper because you elect to not subscribe to the heated seats. You paid for the hardware and it's hobbled so you can't use it. What is more, you have paid for the software engineering it took to hobble the damn thing and enable remote activation.

It's nothing short of a mafia-esque racket.

From that article above, 3 of the eight 'subscriptions' make sense as subs products; the maps updates, the entertainment update (way over priced compared to spotify) and the fucking ridiculous 'internal engine sound' that only a wanker of the highest order would purchase, but still, it makes sense as a potential subscription upgrade (just).

All the rest are hobbled hardware that cost real money to manufacture and for which you paid for on purchase but can't use. None of these items can be 'improved' over the air because software got updated. They are what they are the minute they left the production line.
