I'm sure when tthey planned that RBT. They didn't expect the volume of traffic.

Not like the great Exeter debacle of mid 2000's and its 25km jam

I thought the great Jindy Interschool morning debarcle took the cake.
Grid locked the entire town & bumper to bumper back to East Jindy and beyond.

This all just sounds like social media smoke and mirrors to discourage us Mexicans to come across the border to Perisher with our new Epic passes. Oh wait, we come from the other side...

Since this seems to be this year's driving thread...
Got lucky through Royalla on Friday night... that a Roo decided it didn't want to get up close and personal - saw it late due to oncoming headlights but it was out of the way in time
Several wombats right on the edge of the tar past Wild Brumby

Yesterday on the home journey it was emus on the way down the hill, and the usual silly traffic on the Monaro. So off into the country roads for another adventure to escape, some delightful scenery, plenty of animals including some roos and wombats I got to stop and wait for, and made it home within 10 minutes of the original G-maps ETA. Good thing most people wouldn't like the roads I chose or it could become too popular!

Today on the Alpine Way I managed to find myself in the middle of a very sensible bunch up Penderlea and round to the SkiTube. No one overtook on the hill up and on the way back down there was no breaking and everyone kept about 5-6 seconds apart, all doings about 70. Felt oddly calm and relaxing to drive that way.

What time and where were the Monaro dramas?

I ended up leaving around 3pm. Peak time and besides cooma silliness it was fine (of and old cooma road CBR avoidance!)

Left Jindy a bit after 2 I think. Just the usual sillyness of people bunching up, slowing down extremely for apparently no reason, and multiple small snakes becoming large snakes, people not passing smartly and all that, especially with the lack of passing opportunity Cooma-Tuggers with busy traffic in both directions. So, best to just escape it all :)

    Tips for driving safely....
    1. Get off your ****ing phone!
    2. Only take pictures if you are NOT the driver
    3. Get that shit off your rearview mirror
And maybe you will be able to stay in your lane, not try to overtake with oncoming traffic and we might all make it home safely.

Originally coloured in the plates but she doesn't deserve it. Oh, she did it again. I think we will sit behind this nice p plater rather than be anywhere near her.

Driving from Jindy to Canberra with a plane to catch, on Sunday afternoon after the "dump of the decade". MASSIVE queue of cars to horizon behind numpty in a Honda, speed oscillating between 70 and 100k. The few overtaking lanes were enough for us to get close but not past. Numpty finally turned off at Cooma and as we went past I saw ... you guessed it ... L plates. The rest of the drive was fine.

drove up to falls on saturday, very early. mostly staff on the road, every one of whom pulled over when we came up behind. came to 2 guests (roof pods and interstate plates) who never pulled over, even in the long pull over lanes.

on the way down, shiny audi with custom pates had no intentiuon of pulling over but increased speed on the few overtaking opportunities

Monaro Highway is closed in both directions due to a head-on collision near the Royalla solar farm. If you are heading to Cooma, you will need to divert off the Monaro Highway at Lanyon Drive, take Tompsitt Drive/Edwin Land Parkway through Jerrabomberra and then turn right on to Old Cooma Road. If heading north towards Canberra, turn right on to Old Cooma Road.

An update from the local news website The RiotACT:

One person has died after a truck and car collided on the Monaro Highway on Tuesday morning (3 September).

Around 9:30 am, emergency services were called to Monaro Highway near the Royalla Solar Farm, in what has been described by police as a “serious collision”.

The driver and sole occupant of the car has died and the driver of a semi-trailer is being treated at the scene after the crash.

Police have closed the highway in both directions between Johnson Drive and Old Cooma Road, and it is expected to remain closed for the rest of the day.

ACT Policing have advised motorists to avoid the area.

August has been shiiit for traffic on the monaro! We do every second weekend and up till August, things were calm, people chilled, then the hero’s turned up!

People overtaking on blind corners, over crests, even though traffic is doing a fraction over 100 (not me of course....). Funny thing was the idiot only just made it to Cooma a fraction before us, he was till filling his car at Rythem when we pulled up and wouldn’t look at us.

I said the vide in resort changed in August but man it changed on the road as well!

The man killed in the above accident was a grandfather. No info has been released, but you can’t rule out a medical incident. Looks like the truck was taking measures to avoid him. Very sad. Very glad my kidlet drove back Monday and not yesterday.

I drove past the site today. It is right at the top of the hill out of canberra, just before the overtaking lanes end. There is a big patch of oil on the road on the single lane downhill side, then skid marks crossing the road onto the uphill side/overtaking lanes. Looking at that, along with pictures of the truck post accident, I suspect the truck was in the single lane coming downhill. The impact has happened there, presumably because the car drifted over, then the truck has skidded downhill onto the wrong side.

And the speed camera van that the ACT Government has been operating at that exact spot every Friday afternoon this ski season prevented the accident from occurring. (/sarc)

It's the second car/truck collision at that location in the past 3 years. The previous one appeared to be a suicide, the police noted that for this one they were investigating whether the car driver had a medical episode.

Had to do a Jindy CBR Airport drop off & return today.

Some very entertaining (that is dodgy as) overtaking observed on the way up.

Saw the same thing in the return except now the overtakers were coming head on at me. Not good, please stay on your correct side of the road folks.

    really?

I thought it was ok, mind you I was sleeping and the wife was driving.

Agree with heros coming out in August, farking hell it went mental. We would drive down from Canberra leaving around 1600 and home on Sundays leaving Thredbo around 1600 usually smooth runs except when the storm chasers were out.

Can tell Spring has arrived, almost hit a F-off Wombat this morning. Thing was the size of a mini moke, it would have destroyed the Volvo. Thank good there was no other traffic about. Then had a dumbass kangaroo have a crack too but it had lightened up by then so I has already prepared for its shenanigans.

Another Monaro Highway crash, just near Hume in Canberra.

Traffic was moving ok but based on the number of cop cars, ambo’s etc it’s not a good one

Just after that where the road goes up to the Canberra tip, I’d say someone tried to jump the oncoming traffic.

The local news website Riot ACT is reporting that the ACT Government is going to construct an overtaking lane on the Monaro Highway northbound between Williamsdale and Royalla and a left turn lane off the Monaro into Old Cooma Road. The work will be done over summer to be ready for next ski season.
